There is more about her at http://www.wackyvoices.com/ Robin Williams was asked to sing the song after Ann Murray said she couldn't because she had to play golf that day. There was a lot of debate over how it would be performed. The Academy wanted them to rewrite the lyrics and didn't want fuck, fart or bitch to be sung. They refused to rewrite them. Williams turned away from the mike on fuck, but did sing fart & bitch. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 01:06:11 PST From: "Chipko Arnold" Subject: diversity and a blatent plug Nice to see such diversity. Hmmm...I've only tried "converting" a couple of people to Liz, but in rather nonchalant ways. I play a "work mix" tape at work, consisting of work-friendly songs (which, are most of them, in fact--I just play it low so the four-letter words that would possibly get me into trouble are low-key) Once, my best friend there walked in during "The Divorce Song" and says "What the hell are you listening to now?" I had it louder than normal, and a couple lines caught her interest (She's in the middle of a not-so-pretty bi-coastal divorce). But, she usually says stuff like that, "What weird tunes have you got on today?", or "Who is THAT?" She's a country girl, plus old rock--Bob Seeger, Lynard Skynard, ZZ Top & such. I forgive her. (hee hee hee) Another friend went to Lilith with me, and had never heard Liz before, loved her live--and I made a couple tapes of her stuff for her--but she flaked out on me, so I really don't have much contact with her anymore, and can't muster up a call just to ask how she feels about Liz Phair. My husband doesn't care for her at all, however he thinks shes got "quite a sexy sounding voice". So, all in all, I've just more or less given up. *shrug* Hellooooooo Valerie! Life's been busy & I think I'm envious of you right about now--job change sounds wonderful! Funny thing, I've been "downsized" as well...but, currently anyway, my boss has me covertly in the same position. He cut my officemate & gave me the title instead of her (which in exactly the opposite of what all other offices are doing), but she's still in there too. It's not exactly a "conducive to work" situation. Okay, she's a stupid git But our boss is inept as well, so what else could I expect? Ah, isn't life a joy sometimes? I keep hoping to win a lottery...but I don't even play! Mary-Kay Bergman (aka Shannen Cassidy) killed herself early November of last year. Not only was she the voice of most of the women on South Park, but she did an incredible number of television shows, mostly animated, in the past eight years. She also did voices in the movies _Deep Blue Sea_, _The Iron Giant_, and _Phantom Menance_, to name only three. As for why Robin Williams sang this song - well, his buddy Billy runs the shows, and Williams wasn't in a nominated film this year. He had to get on camera somehow. And I saw Matthew Sweet a few months ago here at the beach. A most excellent show, because I hadn't seen him live since he toured for _Girlfriend_. As for whoever it was that said they hate Ben Folds Five, that's too bad. They put on a great show at the 930 last October(?), with Train and Fleming & John. For me, BFF is one of those bands that is much better live than in the studio (and I think their studio albums rule, too!) That should be another great show. If anyone is going, and see Doug their road manager, tell him Mike from Virginia Beach says hello. Next big concert for me is Pat DiNizio at a friend's house up the road. Anyone on this list catch any of his stops on this his Living Room Couch tour? Mikey C Va Beach NP: _'til we outnumber them - The songs of Woody Gunthrie_, due out from Righteous Babe Records in May. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this piano book? (I am interested in the piano music, not the incorrect lyrics.) I have been looking for it and am told that the only Whip-Smart book in print is a guitar book. Was Liz mistaken or is it just out-of-print? Any help is greatly appreciated. Nothing like seeing your name up in lights. Hope you can find a job real soon. To bring you all up to date on my whereabouts; my beloved wife Susan and I got so caught up in the plight of over one million little girls in orphanages in China that we decided to make one of them our very own. We started the process in September and will be getting our daughter later this year or early 2001. The paperwork and backround checks are to numerous to mention. The Chinese Gov't really makes sure no sicko's are getting their kids. We've also been trying to raise money by getting our community involved, unfortunately their doesn't seem to be much interest in helping out. Our daughter was probably born within the last 30 days or so. For those of you unfamiliar with the situation in China her is some info to help you understand: -One child per family is allowd--should you have a second child and decide to keep him/her then you are(don't quote me) taxed at a higher rate in addition to paying fines. Very few people can afford this so they put one of the two children in an orphanage. Usually by abandonment because you are not allowd to take your child directly to an orphanage, the gov't wants all ties with the parents severed. One common occurence is that the first child is a girl and when she's about ,let's say, 5 the Mom get's preggers and has a son. Carrying the family name on is so important that most of the time the son will be kept and the little girl abandoned(regretfully) in a public place, thus the large quantity of little girls in the orphanages. In addition to this( for those of you who don't already know) I'm Daddy to five other kids ages 3,5,9,13,15. That tends to keep you a little bit busy(especially the 15 yr old). Although I read every digest, I just have trouble finding the time to write. I know many of you don't want to hear this but if you haven't gotten into Aimee Mann yet do yourself a favor.............
