Allison ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 05:40:32 -0800 From: "Shelly" Subject: Diversity & the Oscars. Diverse musical taste? Yes, yes & an astounding yes! I thrive on the variety of the music I listen to. Queued up in my car for play is currently: Sleater Kinney "The Hot Rock" Sugarcubes "Life is Good" (It's a standard fixture--but for the life of me, I'm not sure if that the correct title!) Chris LeDoux "Rodeo Songs" (One-time pro-rodeo cowboy signs corny story songs) Robert Plant & Jimmy Page's "No Quarter" Metallica "And Justice for All" And a mix CD I made of the Beastie Boys Anthology for my hubby for Christmas. I listen to alot of mainstream (Melissa Etheridge, Bruce Springsteen, Beck), alot of older "alternative" (Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Cure) some country (Trisha Yearwood, Chris LeDoux, George Strait) and some "oldies" (such as Led Zep, The Doors--I was a huge fan of them in my high school years--Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Beatles...). It all just depends upon my mood. And the Oscars...what can you say about the Oscars? I hate myself for loving to watch it so much? I thought that Peter Coyote was great, Haley Joel Osment was adorable, several Directors (Lasse Hallstrom--Cider House Rules, M.Night Shyamalan-The Sixth Sense, and Sam Mendes--American Beauty) all looked yummy! I was so pleased to see Kevin Spacey win for American Beauty, and AB win for best picture. Hillary Swank was the picure of grace & watching her hubby, Chad Lowe crying while she was standing strong, giving her speech was both touching and almost uncomfortable. I felt Julianne Moore is far too pretty to have looked the way she did that night, and that Warren Beatty is *finally* beginning to look his age! Tom & Nicole looked almost too good for words. And, to top it all off, one of my favorite writers, John Irving, took home an Oscar for Best Adapeted Screenplay (Cider House Rules), and Michael Caine's acceptance speech was both appropriate and touching. Unfortunately, I missed the first hour or so, so I didn't get to see either Best Supporting Oscar given out, so I missed seeing Jude Law & how lovely Chloe Sevigny or how odd Angelina Jolie's fraternal obsession looked first hand. And a note on the "Blame Canada" being sung by Robin Williams...I'd heard a rumor that the woman that does the female voices for South Park characters committed suicide that day or the day before the Oscars...which is maybe why Robin Williams did it? Anyway...enough of the Hollywood envy. I'm off to slave away dressed in an off the rack dress & Clarice Starling shoes. ~gunshy~ Shelly NP: The Pixies "Bossanova" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 09:01:04 -0500 From: Mariam Hamou Subject: diversity??? Hey all, How's it going? I was just reading the thread about diverse music and hey I think I fit into that catagory. I like anything from Dance to Punk. I'll even listen to New Country such as Wilco. Lately, I've been getting into more ethnic sounding music - I have a thing for Lebanese music (could it be because I'm Lebanese????) and I enjoy listening to Greek, Italian or anything Meditteranean. Come see my CD collection, you'll even find Mozart and Verdi (for those nights when I have to work late!!). The only thing that I can't stand right now is Mariah Carey and her whole genre of music. It seems that whereever I go I hear her annoying voice. I really do wish people would stop playing her songs around me. As for Matthew Sweet, he's amazing - I loved Girlfriend and 100% Fun, I haven't heard much off of the new one but he usually puts out solid CD's so I'm not worried. That's my contribution for the month I think - back to work. - -- Mariam K Hamou B.A., M.L.I.S. I love him so much!!!! ...matthew is wonderful, but i don't live in the DC area...but, my hairdresser's husband's band, the tender idols, from atlanta is touring with matthew and will probably be opening. they're on a label in NYC, kinda do the brit thing but are good from what i know. let us know what you think. nice to see so many new people posting...actually, it seems like participating list members are getting younger. not a bad thing, merely an observation. but i'd be lying if i said i didn't miss the posters i've come to know and love...shelley, sandra (how are you doing, hon?), dana (will respond to you in full after the big move...much to tell), DSOTM, all of the michaels, tad, and others of you who i'm probably forgetting. just wanted to share that i've been downsized...that's right, my position at work has been eliminated! but i get two months pay, a fabulous recommendation and time for a little soul-searching. not too shabby... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 06:27:22 -0700 From: Greg Bishop Subject: Re: diverse tastes/ Songs to convert by I find I'm listening to Liz in probably unhealthy amounts lately, but other favorites include: Almost any old western swing music The Louvin Brothers (1950s white gospel-like hillbilly pop music) New Orleans brass bands Duke Ellington Sun Ra Squirrel Nut Zippers Public Enemy The Who (1960s era mostly) Shonen Knife (older stuff - before they learned how to play their instruments) The Muffs (Listen to a lot as well) Red Aunts Southern Culture On The Skids Iggy Pop Trailer Bride Tarnation Also just discovered the MC5 and really like them. And about that other thread: I turned on two friends to Liz in the past year. Now she just has to finish the new album and tour so I can take them to the shows. One was female, and she said that Liz spoke her feelings. The other was male, and he was bowled over by WCSE (he was tripping on mushrooms at the time, but by any means necessary I say.) I was channel surfing and I come across this show that looked kind of interesting. So I'm watching it for awhile and all of a sudden I hear the opening drum beat to Johnny Feelgood! Some girl was playing it on her stereo to try and lure this guy into her room. So they play most of the song while their well, I think you can figure out what they were doing. :) It was just really cool to hear Liz being played (rather loudly) on a TV show so unexpectedly. >>Question: Does anyone else on this list have a diverse tastes in music? (meaning: on one hand you listen to Liz, and on the other you listen to... oh... lets say... KoRn?) Just asking...<< If your looking for someone with a diverse taste in music, I'm the guy. I listen to practically everything. My favorite artists are Liz, The Doors, Stone Temple Pilots, Tom Petty and Megadeth, so that should tell you something right there. I'm first and foremost a music fan. I don't care how popular something is. If I like it, then I like it. Just for the record, I'm trying to brag about the fact that I like alot of types of music, I'm simply expressing what I like. :) Craig NP: Creed - "I'm Eighteen" __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tom Petty, Stone Temple Pilots, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sheryl Crow, The Beatles, John Lennon, Dot Allison and more of course. And I thought I had a strange taste in music? Oh well... The Oscars were ohk, I liked Angelina Jolie's acceptance speech. Cheers for American Beauty for their awards! I wish they had gotten the original score though. My advice for the producers, skip the clips they always show (kids in movies, movies thru the past years, blah blah), makes the show too damn long. Oooh! Time for the Price is Right!
