Anyway, who is this guy? bob mould was the singer and guitarist in this incredibly influential '80s punk band called husker du. after the band broke up, he formed the band sugar, and he also has 4 solo records out. truly, one of my favorite artists and songwriters; he's simply unbelievable. vasant - ----- This Ain't No Picnic: the very best in indie rock/pop & other classics Sundays, 2 to 4 pm. I find "Polyester Bride" to work somewhat with converting. I say "somewhat" because a lot of people listen to it, like it, then when they hear 'Guyville' they kind of get turned off. I think its that lo-fi thing. go figure. Of course it doesn't help any that they only like 'popular' music... which sucks because they're conforming. No one has their own mind anymore it seems. I actually got my best friend to listen to Liz by just giving him two cd-r's of nothing but Liz. It had stuff ranging from girlysound to whitechocolatespaceegg.... he was actually hooked once he heard "Bloodkeeper". I thought that was pretty cool... so i figured I'd share it. No one probably cares, but oh well. Question: Does anyone else on this list have a diverse tastes in music? (meaning: on one hand you listen to Liz, and on the other you listen to... oh... lets say... KoRn?) Just asking... - -Michael ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 02:35:50 -0500 (EST) From: george2@sas.upenn.edu (matt george) Subject: bob mould is a wrestling writer !!! > Subject: who is this bob mould? > > Anyone like Bob Mould?....Anyway, who is this guy? actually bob mould was a founding member of the seminal punk band Husker Du who along with the Replacements were just TREMENDOUSLY important in the hardcore punk scene in the mid-80s i think they broke up in the late 80s, but they inspired tons of other artists including rem, the goo goo dolls (uh, before they turned all poppy and movie soundtracky) and nirvana. i never really got into husker du too much, but i guess they're pretty important in recent music history...i remember my spin alternative music guide had their album zen arcade listed as like the 5th most influencial alternative album ever (or 7th or somewhere in the top 10...) but actually where i DID get into him was with his second band, sugar, who formed in the early 90s and put out two EXCELLENT albums, copper blue and file under easy listening that came out in like 92 and 94 i think ? they're both those kinda albums that you don't think of as classics or life changing, but just great albums...like a a very good on the P-F-G-VG-E scale :) sugar is like a band with heavy noisy guitars, but the music is very cleanly produced and easy and fun to listen to...you always hear about two things when you read stuff about bob mould: his nasal voice that he multi-tracks over and over again until it sounds the way he wants and that his music has "melody under noise" i mean, i think the songs are pretty much poppy rock songs with a lot of hooks even though i guess most people would kinda categorize it with that early-mid 90s "alternative" label. there's two singles of theirs that i love, your favorite thing and changes (which is one of my all time favorite songs). but sugar broke up a few years ago, and i know he has a few solo albums out that i never really heard. but i would really recommend those two sugar albums to anyone interested... matt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 01:00:47 PST From: "Chipko Arnold" Subject: Liz in sheep shocker Liz is in the May edition of Mountain Biking UK!!! Yes, really. There's a great cartoon strip called "Mint Sauce" drawn by the ultra cool Jo Burt. It's the most popular feature of the mag and one thing the man Burt does is add song lyrics/messages and stuff in the margins and around the edges of the strip. Upon closer inspection, the new one features the "It's harder to be friends..." line. This is indeed a great honour for Liz and i can't wait to see her don lycra and head for the hills on an Orange. Bob Mould was mentioned by someone. He was in Husker Du many years ago, then formed Sugar (after a solo stint) and then went solo again. Better on record than live (sorry any fans). Last time he toured the UK he said it was his last band tour and he'd be going acoustic from now on. Since then he hasn't done anything. Rumour has it that he works for the WWF now!!! Can't imagine him wrestling. Off to dream of bikes and girls. "and i wonder how i've come to know so much less than i knew before" ... Joseph Lee Henry. Check out some of his older stuff - Workbook (solo), Candy Apple Grey (Husker Du) or Copper Blue (Sugar). There are more, but those three are probably my favorites. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 13:14:59 EST From: NegSplitz@aol.com Subject: Re: Bob Mould Jason..you are clearly hearing some good music..both on the No Alt. CD and with Kristin Hersh..Bob Mould was central to the 80's U.S. punk group "Husker Du"..later on he created "Sugar".. Pick up something from that era....He has been around a long time, and his guitar/song-writing craft is true to form..Shifting in the 90's to more heavy-guitar (sometimes using 4 big loud ones in concert!) rock and roll..and acoustic ballads. He is one of those "influential" types..sort of like the Pixies are considered today..and he has recently "retired" from electric music and is crafting more acoustic stuff..One of my favorites artists..and I will miss those big, loud concerts! I have a bunch of friends who became fans after hearing Fuck and Run and Flower. We were all kinda young at the time though so maybe it was just the idea of songs that were kind of in your face and shocking and rebelious with all that dirty talk that made my friends like it. - -e ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 16:58:09 EST From: MaryChristineK@aol.com Subject: Re: a song I can just say which songs have prompted my friends to be fans. Whip Smart is the album as a whole (May Queen and Supernova) that has interested most of my friends. "Never Said" or "Divorce Song" has made much of an impression, too. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #81 ***********************************
