Okay, hi, it's me, and I was trying to stay out of this thread, but I can't. :) I want to start off by saying that just because I think Albini has done a wonderful job producing many records doesn't mean that he's necessarily the best guy for everyone. And, okay, he doesn't like Liz, but everyone is entitled to his own opinion, and realize that Albini is absolutely *huge* in Chicago, and especially huge in the Chicago instrumental-band scene, so I can completely understand why he might not like Liz. But, disclaimers out of the way. He has done some *amazing* things with records over the years. Just to name a few: Dirty Three 'Ocean Songs' [1]. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion 'Acme'. Dianogah 'As Seen From Above'. Man Or AstroMan's 'Experiment Zero' (which is probably their best album, and they've had quite a few). He's done terrific work with the Jesus Lizard and with Will Oldham (aka Palace, etc.) And, of course, he's done amazing work both for and in his own band, Shellac. On a personal note, he produced an EP for some friends of mine a few years back, and they liked his work so much that he produced their most recent full-length album as well. The band is called Low, and their music is soft, quiet, mellow, and absolutely beautiful -- it's the type of stuff you'd play for your parents (or grandparents), and DEFINITELY not the type of stuff that you'd imagine that Steve "stick your tongue up my ass" Albini would be listening to. But, he did a beautiful job with their album, and it's beautiful and intense and dreamy all at the same time. (The EP which features Albini's work is called "Transmission" [it includes a cover of a Joy Division song by the same name] and the album which he helped with is "Secret Name"). Anyway, I know he's done some dumb things over the years, but let's not forget some of the wonderful things he's done, either. And, I know that I'm sorta getting a reputation on this list for listening to all sorts of random, obscure, small, indie bands that no one has ever heard, heard of, or cared about. But, Liz started out that way too :-) Catherine [1] A note on the Dirty Three: 2/3 of the Dirty Three were featured on Cat Power's album "Moon Pix", just to tie the Albini thread into another thread on this list. And, I agree -- Cat Power is amazing, but she sounds nothing like Liz, and other than mentioning that Cat Power is on Matador (Liz's former label), the two really shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 06:41:11 -0800 (PST) From: Craig King Subject: ok, now I draw the line! >>and Scott Weiland? Ugh! Please!!!!!!<< Alright, normally I just ignore something like this. However, when it comes to Scott Weiland I can't. What the hell do you possibly have against Scott Weiland? Scott is one of the most talented artists I have ever seen, with or without Stone Temple Pilots. He is a great lyricist and a great songwriter. His words mean more to me than anyone and they have helped to get me through more tough times than I care to mention. He is without a doubt the best frontman and performer in rock today. Nobody has anything on Scott Weiland as far as being a live performer is concerned. Just watch any live performance he has ever given, and it'll prove just that. He is a madman on stage and always gives 150%. I'm not trying to start a war. However, I can't just sit by and let somebody talk shit about a man who, next to Liz, is my all time favorite artist (w/ STP). Sorry, but I just can't. HAHAHAHAHAHAH BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. ahem. so did you all realize that it is kinda one year ago tonight that some of us were at the lounge ax... hmmm lounge ax... *drool* me with my arm around liz singing "and you girlfriend, too" while sharing the mic with her??? was this real? it was on a sunday, technically it will be one year ago the 14th, but still i have been experiencing major lounge ax vibes and memories: jorge's letter, the soundcheck, girls room wild thing... i was shaking when i stepped down from the stage then she held my hand for a few seconds during mesmerizing.... anyone else, jorge, craig, jase, janet? (p.s. hi janet!!) are jill sutton and brian belbis still around? that said, i just don't think i'll be in chicago in june. i have obligations there in july and will be leaving my job in order to see phish for the first two weeks in july then go to chicago... so i probably won't be at the phest. but i'm on the mailingm list anyway so i know what y'all are doing. <(:D later gators katie b p.s. lani i need to update you on my wheelings and dealings with our big hairy mutual friend! he gave me a Velma action figure! :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 22:25:07 GMT From: "mesmer izing" Subject: nina gordon rid of me does hurt my ears. 4 tracks is unarguably better. nina is on warner bros. and her album is scheduled for the 1st week of april. that is what some sites said. nathan ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 21:31:44 EST From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: Re: ok, now I draw the line! I'm not a big STP fan, but I do kind of feel soryy for Weiland. True, he got himself into a mess because he can't stay off the drugs, but I remember hearing an interview with the band, when he was in rehab, and some of the things they said about it and him made me feel that way. They kind of suggested that his freedom had been taken away completly, and yes that does happen in rehab, or any other institution. So I hope he cleans himself up, and then we can hear some good things about him. Otherwise he may join folks like Janis Joplin in OD land. Notes: - - Jarboe [who does "Tame"] is the Swans guy. - - Moth Wranglers ["No. 13 Baby"] includes my friend LD Beghtol, who appeared (singing, playing, graphic design) on the Magnetic Fields recent "69 Love Songs". Note for Magnetic Fields fans: this sounds NOTHING like TMF, at all. - - Drekka ["Into the White"] is another friend of mine, Michael Anderson; the band is sort of electropop. very good. from chicago. that's all. catherine ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #67 ***********************************
