Alas she was on the bill with Kelly Hogan, so she was made to look a bit weak. Fellow Mekon Jon Langford also played as part of the Waco Brothers and also plays on Kelly's album as one of the Pine Valley Cosmonauts. It seems Sally and Jon are now based in the Bloodshot hub of Chicago. Must admit thet i thought the Mekons had split, but they did release a new album last year, so it looks like they keep busy by playing in as many different bands as possible. On the basis of the gig, i'd skip on Sally's album and buy Kelly Hogan's instead. She rocks, ST was a bit tame. "and i wonder how i've come to know so much less than i knew before" ... I know I've asked this question before, but quite frankly I don't remember what the original response was! Anyways, I'm going to Vegas in late-May and I want to check out this guitar. Does anyone know exactly where Liz's guitar is on display at the hotel? I've been there before and there is like 4374983754554 guitars on display so I'm just trying to pinpoint exactly where it is in the hotel so that I don't miss it. I have been reading alot about them lately since they've come out with a new album- but i've never heard them before. They sound interesting- can anyone enlighten me? I would love to listen to some new stuff, but I recently acquired the 15 cd's from the new years phish shows and i just can't seem to get them out of my cd player. i know this doesnt excite many of you. oh, and about fiona- i still find her brilliant and love her music, but it did leave a very bad taste in my mouth about her. i am very jealous over all of you actually getting to see her perform the way she should have in ny. I did get the magnolia soundtrack and absolutely LOVE it and will try to catch up on Aimee Mann's old stuff at some point. It was thanks to Jase's excitement over the cd and after seeing the movie and the music having such an affect on me that i had to run out and buy it. I do value most of the opinions expressed here about music- since most of us have such eclectic tastes- thats what makes this list so special. how boring if we all liked the same things? I havent read any of the back and forth posts recently about the whole music taste thing because it kinda bores me- (that's not a diss, i just dont feel like reading it) but in my opinion, and what i have been able to get out of this list for the last 5 years - is that we all share this one common link that effects us all so profoundly (enought that we are all on a list to discuss it) that sometimes i think we expect to share the same views on other types of music as well. but apparently we all have extremely diverse tastes and opinions that it really is not the case. I am intrigued by the whole "musical taste" thing and why i can listen to liz and find it absolutely brilliant and amazing and life changing and my sister will listen and look at me like i am crazy and just hate it! and that every jam band i hear i just love and cant get enough of and my sister can listen to any heavy metal/hard rock type of thing and just love it and i cant take it. its so weird how a certain beat can cause a whole movement - like the whole hippy phish thing. i go to these shows and am just astounded by the fact that 80,000 people (give or take alot) can be on the exact same wavelength- i know i have rambled just now and probably made NO sense. i dont even think there was a point to it- in any case, i have to go and write report cards for my kids- who by the way are almost making me want to change my profession! education is in a sad state right now (especially the nyc board of ed) - ok, i could go on but i've bored you all enough already. i love staff development days! I love her too! My absolute favorite is Living in Oblivion. She's just radiant in it. And I love that she's married to Dermot Mulroney but doesn't act opposite him in that movie. I'm hoping she snags the Oscar, but expecting Angelina to get it (which isn't too bad a tradeoff). paige- ===== "Seems like the small things are the only things I'll fight." I just don't see this one happening. Steve Albini *loathes* Liz and has had nothing but negative things to say about her in the past. About the nicest thing he's called her in the press is a "pandering slut." There's actually an article Albini wrote archived on the web that fellow list member Nora sent me the URL for recently; if I can find it again, I'll forward it to the list. I do believe, though, that hard feelings probably still do exist. Albini was one of the Chicago scenesters who got really bent out of shape by Liz's out-of-nowhere success. Of course, he's a total hypocrite -- he always bashes artists who experience any degree of commercial success, but meanwhile goes on to produce artists who sell even more records than the bands and artists he's critical of. Besides, I can't help but think it would be an odd pairing -- half of the stuff Albini records turns out to be a total sludgefest and he's apparently not an easy guy to work with. Liz is very strong-willed and has a hard time getting along sometimes with people like Scott Litt and Brad Wood, who seem infinitely more agreeable. I think any set of sessions with Albini would find Liz bailing partway through, like she did with the very first set of sessions with Litt. I'd put my vote in for Jon Brion because of the amazing work he's done with Aimee Mann and Fiona Apple, but from what I've heard, he and Buddy Judge do not get along very well ever since the Grays (a short-lived band they were both in, responsible for the amazing but out-of-print _Ro Sham Bo_) broke up. This possibly explains why Buddy was nowhere to be found on Aimee's _I'm With Stupid_ after playing on over half the songs on _Whatever_, but has been working with her again now that she's producing her own stuff. Buddy himself would be a great choice -- he produced one of the best songs on Aimee's _Bachelor No. 2_ ("Calling it Quits"), co-produced another ("Nothing is Good Enough), and is credited with "extensive production assistance" on all of the songs Aimee produced herself. We all know that he's a phenomenal guitarist, but he seems to be very good on other instruments as well -- he's credited with programming and drum loops on a few of the tracks. (Another Liz associate also contributed to _Bachelor No. 2_ -- Ric Menck plays drums on "Nothing is Good Enough" and "Calling It Quits." I wonder if it's just a coincidence or if Buddy had been responsible for getting him involved.) Another good producer for Liz might be Mike Denneen, who did a terrific job with both of Jen Trynin's records, among my favorites of all-time. I believe someone has already mentioned Brendan O'Brien, who might not be a bad choice either. While I'm not a big fan of a lot of the bands he produces, he did an excellent job on both Matthew Sweet's _100% Fun_ and Michael Penn's _Resigned_ (not to mention Aimee Mann's "Driving Sideways"). I'd also be interested in seeing Liz produce more of her own songs -- the few tracks she did for _whitechocolatespaceegg_ (not to mention "Greased Lightning," which didn't make the album) are all quite good and show a lot of potential. It'll be interesting to see whatever does end up happening.... I think this is a real opportunity for us to get to know more about each other personally and not just a way to say Black Market White Babies Dealer (which I hope we all are most least like) or Polyester Bride/Girls Room because you're a guy. That is to say, go with the feel of the song and some of the sentiment expressed. I hope this experiment works as well as I think I could... paige- ===== "Seems like the small things are the only things I'll fight."
