Does >anyone know about this? Here lies the answer. This is taken from the "New York Times Magazine", October 2, 1994: - ---------- Phair worked in New York as an intern for the politcally focused artists Nancy Spero and Leon Golub. After graduating from Oberlin, she moved to San Francisco with some classmates. "It ended in total disillusionment," Phair says. "None of us followed through on any of our plans. Nobody came charging through our door saying, 'Oh, you little pocket of creativity, come work for me!'" Phair bounced to Boston and then back to Chicago; for a time, she supported herself by making charcoal drawings. "I was hellbent not to get a job, and I wanted to make my art work -- frankly, because everyone told me I couldn't do it. It nearly killed me. I lived without gas, I ate at friends' houses, I kept trying to pretend I had money. It was romantic for 25 seconds a day, but that sustained me." - ---------- I'm not certain of exact dates, but Liz lived in New York in the latter part of the 1980s. "From: Easter Subject: Lyricist vs. songwriter (me confused)" Katie wrote in response to Craig's post about songwriters/lyricists... "This could make an interesting discussion, I dunno which way it could go when I'm still scratching my head. I've thought of myself as a songwriter once, but have never written music before in my life, so I guess I qualify as a lyricist, but that doesn't sound too good - to me at least. So fire away with your ideas/opinions/ramblings/etc." Hmmm, I like this topic. I agree, Craig, there is a difference, albeit I never really thought to look it up in the dictionary (smart girl, you Katie!). But, when it comes to lyricists, I tend to dig more along the lines of Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Springsteen, maybe even Emmylou Harris--I think maybe it comes down to the simple fact that what I am enjoying MOST about the song is the lyrics, moreso than the actual entire arrangement. But then when it comes to songwriters, I'd probably go more with, something similar to Craig's choices--Tom Petty, Liz Phair, PJ Harvey, Sleater-Kinney... If I can take the words away from the song & lay them out like a poem--or a story perhaps--then I would consider them lyrically strong. I don't know if that helps--I'm not a musician by any means other than piano, bass guitar & sax growing up & I read music. But, not because I'm particularly talented, just because I like it (and the piano--Mom made me). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 08:16:25 -0600 From: "Morrise, Jason" Subject: one last response on variety >And I will admit, I felt that the part about not having a broad taste in >music was at least somewhat aimed at me, because I do tend to discuss only a >handful of artists who are all mostly of a certain type. I just wanted to >feel like I could like what I want to without being criticized for not >having enough variety. I know this is only one thing you said, but I just wanted to respond to it especially. if you only like two artists, who cares? there have been times when all I have listened to is eig for a week straight, because I didn't feel in the mood for anything else. but I like to have a variety so that I always have something to fit my mood, even if it is some stupid bubblegum blowhard. I guess maybe I get too sensitive sometimes, because really, I would expect some good-natured ribbing for actually owning the birtney spears album. and secretly I want to go find an old debbie gibson album. what can I say, it takes me back, way back. maybe it gets old when there are 10 posts about aimee mann and none about any other non-liz artist, but if I have had enough, I skip them. no biggie. and there have been several artists I have discovered by being on this list: lucinda williams, old 97's, aimee mann, kelly willis, beth orton to name a few. I always try to share when I find someone new I really like, but a lot of the time, it feels like it falls on deaf ears. maybe not. to get on an entirely new subject, it occurred to me the other day concerning liz's post a few months ago that luke wood (the e-mail account she sent from) could very well be related to brad wood. the address was dreamworks' music division. did this ever get mentioned? I don't think it did. anyway, I sent a polite e-mail to the address (I know she said not to, but hey) inquiring if he knew anything about liz's album/tour plans or if he could pass my address on to someone who might be in the know. no response, and that was well over a month ago. oh, well, a shot in the dark. can't say I blame the guy for ignoring unsolicited e-mails. anyway, no hard feelings. but I would agree that commercial radio today sucks. jake ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 06:41:35 -0800 (PST) From: Craig King Subject: threads >>What with all the talk concerning Liz looking for a producer, I would like ta hear who ya'll think would be good for Liz.<< As much as I love Brad Wood, I think Liz is past that phase of her life. Ultimately, I would love to see Liz produce the album herself. However if she has to have a producer, my vote goes to either Rick Ruben or Brendan O'Brien. I think Rick Ruben would be great because he's produces such a wide variety of music. Plus, he produced what I consider one of the greatest albums ever made, Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" album. I hold "Wildflowers" on the same level as EIG in respect to both of their simplicities. Both are brilliant albums. Brendan O'Brien is the producer of my favorite band in the entire world, Stone Temple Pilots, and has also produced a man who, like Jorge said, is very similar to Liz, Neil Young. >>Sooo..help me Rhonda, I've always stumbled as to what's the difference between the two, then felt like a retard when I actually looked up the words in the dictionary. =\ << To me at least, their is a big diffference. A songwriter is someone who writes the words and music for a song. A lyricist is someone who only writes the words and does not compose any of the music. Going back to my examples, Jim Morrison was the lyricist and frontman for the Doors. He wrote all of the words and never wrote a lick of music. Therefore he was a lyricist. Liz writes both the words and music of her songs, therefore she is a songwriter. At least that's my opinion. This changes all of the time, but: Top 10 Liz songs: 1. Stratford-On-Guy 2. Blood Keeper 3. Glory 4. Russian Girl 5. Hello Sailor 6. Polyester Bride (still the best guitar riff she's ever written, IMO) 7. Don't Apologize 8. White Bird of Texas 9. Dogs of L.A. 10. From the songs that I've heard off of the upcoming "An Evening With..." I would have to suggest Mike Dineen in Boston, Bob Rock, or Steve Albini. There is also another, lesser known producer in Boston by the name of John Caruso. If anyone is familiar with Alison Pipitone, he is the guy that co-produced her "Life In The First Person" record. On a related subject, I remember chat I had with Dale Anderson (the executive producer for that record) and he mentioned that Alison is a big Liz fan. Perhaps she's on this list. One never knows. It would have to be EIG because you can't like Liz and not like this album. EIG is Liz at her rawest and most powerful, in my opinion, so why not start here? I did, and I'm grateful for it. (2) Does your answer change if that person is your mom? Yes, I must admit, my answer does change if it is my mom. I would probably play WCSE for my mom first, and slowly introduce Whipsmart and EIG to her. (3) What Liz song should be on your answering machine? I would put the intro to "Explain It To Me" on my answering machine, because the guitar in that song is amazing. (4) What Liz song would you ask for if allowed to pick? "Stratford-on-Guy" (5) What one Liz song do you not need to hear again? "Big Tall Man" (6) Who's your favorite movie actor of all time? Of all time, Robert Duvall. In the past ten years, Kevin Spacey. (7) Who's your fave movie actress of all time? Of all time, Vanessa Redgrave. In the past ten years, Catherine Keener. PLEASE rent "Walking and Talking" if you haven't seen it!! (8) Who's your fave songwriter? Liz Phair and Paul Westerberg (9) Fave musician? John Frusciante and Ben Folds (I'm new school, sorry. There are just too many "legends" to pick from) (10) Favorite singer? It's too hard to pick just one.
