When I saw her for the Tidal album, she was excellent, she said she was in a really good mood when she came out, and it was a fantastic show. However, she was set off by the dumbest things, and she shocked her lip on the microphone and promptly scream "FUCK" into the microphone...the crtowd was silent, but she did apologize. I personally love Fiona, but I do think she needs some lessons in grace. As for Liz content--- As an ardent R.E.M. fan, I think she should cover "Find the River" or "Stand" although i would just love to hear her voice live.....sigh. - --Katie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 03:00:44 -0500 (EST) From: MAILER-DAEMON Subject: survey Yeah, here's what I think of your survey as best as I can recall it: 1 - As far as converting people, I'll just listen to what I listen to and if they like it, well good for them. 2 - I played whitechocolatespaceegg for my mom. I don't think she cared much. 3 - Liz on my answering machine? I have a pet peeve with answering machine messages with soundtracks. Ever since that damn No Doubt song. 4 - If I could only have on Liz song, I couldn't live without Nashville. 5 - If I couldn't have one Liz song, it'd be "Elvis Be True" because sometimes I don't want to listen to the last minute and a half of it. 6 - Favorite actor? Johnny Depp. 7 - Actress? I've always loved Sherilyn Fenn, but I can't say it's all about her acting abilities (though she was great in Twin Peaks and Wild At Heart). 8 - Songwriter, that one goes to Bob Dylan. 9 - As for musician, right now I'm pretty partial to Mississippi John Hurt, he's got that sittin' back on your porch and pickin' away feeling. 10 - My favorite singer right now I think is Robert Johnson. Listenin' to him wail away on the last verse of "Love in Vain Blues" is absolutely haunting. Joshua Patrick Kanary, Esquire "Well, my daddy, he didn't leave me much, you know he was a very simple man, but what he did tell me was this, he did say, son, he said, he say, you know, it's possible to become so defiled in this world that your own father and mother will abandon you and if that happens, God will always believe in your ability to mend your ways." -Bob Dylan's acceptance speech in its entirety for his lifetime achievement Grammy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 01:31:42 -0800 (PST) From: ---becky--- Subject: okay..... 1.) Well, sorry to get defensive here, but this was written in response to a post I made, so.... Why do some people feel the need to make such a big deal about what a wide variety of music they listen to and look down on others for not being the same way? That has always seemed every bit as snobbish to me as those who only listen to music from one genre and are critical of anything else. Besides, the indie/alternative/college/whatever genre is pretty wide-ranging, which a lot of people seem to forget -- unless all this time Pavement, Amy Rigby, The Loud Family, Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney, Belle and Sebastian, and Liz Phair, etc., etc., have sounded completely alike and I've just never noticed. >I'm of a different mind. I like vegetables (liz >phair, jen trynin) as much as the next guy but i also >love a nice juicy steak (classic rock, oasis) as well >occassional high-sugar junk food (third eye blind, >christina aguilara). Cotton candy has no nutritional >value but it sure is fun to eat it every now and then. I like good songwriting and I'll take it wherever I can get it. And you know, I'm completely unapologetic for finding most of what's on the radio these days to be terribly uninteresting. And it's not that I only like music that is "difficult" -- quite a lot of what I listen to is very melodic and rather accessible. I mean, the new Michael Penn album seems fairly radio-friendly to me, for example, as does, say, Matthew Sweet. Probably why I favor them over what is actually on the radio is because their lyrics are much better. Besides, don't make too many assumptions about other people's music collections. Maybe some of us mainly talk about a certain type of artist, but that's not *all* that we listen to. Or maybe I should have just mentioned the Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Public Enemy, Crowded House, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, etc., long before now. Jake wrote: >I happen to enjoy a full course meal, but to >each his own, right? Then why are you criticizing people and not just letting them enjoy what they enjoy, sans comments like "thank goodness there are others on this list who listen to a broad variety of musical flavors?" Just let people like what they want to like, and feel free to do your own thing. There's no need to be so critical. And again, sorry to get so defensive, but I can't help but feel like this is at least partially aimed at me.... Is it an album that is sold in regular stores like Best Buy? The Pixies were a great underappreciated band who were way ahead of their time. Not to mention Kim Deal is one hell of a bassist. One more song I nominate for Liz to cover is "California Dreamin" by The Momma's and the Poppas. If she gave it that Liz touch it would sound amazing. Robert wrote: >>I'm of a different mind. Cotton candy has no nutritional value but it sure is fun to eat it every now and then.<< Interesting analogy Robert. I have to say that I agree with you, although I am not into "junk food" at all. My diet is more a mix of the indy rock genre (Liz, Juliana Hatfield, Aimee Mann), heavy metal (Megadeth, Anthrax), hard rock (Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Nirvana), classic rock (The Doors, Zeppelin, Stones), good old rock and roll (Tom Petty), and even a little blues and jazz. Yes, I also like some of the rap/metal stuff like Rage Against The Macine, Kid Rock, and Korn. So sue me! :) What can I say, I have eclectic tastes. To me if it just plain sounds good, or if there is great songwriting or musicianship, then I like it. I don't dislike something just because it is popular. What bugs me the most is when someone doesn't like something ONLY because it is popular. That makes no sense to me. The Liz album you'd play to convert someone? WCSE because it has that Liz sound, but it's more accessible. I think EIG is probably the hardest for people to get next too at first. WCSE has more of that pop thing happening. Of course, if it's someone into rock and roll, go for Whipsmart. 2.) Does your answer change if the person is your mom? If so, what album? Whipsmart for mom. She actually went out and bought that one because of me. She loves Cinco De Mayo. if this question was designed due to EIG and it's "sexual frank" lyrics, that wouldn't apply to my mom. She likes Flower, just doesn't want Dad to know it. 3.) What Liz song would you ask for if allowed to pick ONE? oh geez.. might as well as me my favorite kid. probably Supernova. 5.) What one Liz song do you not need to hear again? Any reason why? "Miss Lucy"... cause I can't get into it. 6.) Who's your favorite movie actor of all-time? Bruce Willis or Harrison Ford. 7.) Who's your fave movie actress of all-time? Carrie Fisher, cuz when I was little I thought she was the most amazing cuz of Princess Leia. She was my favorite from three to my teens. lately... i'm a big fan of Julianne Moore well, the answer to these questions are actually liz, but i'll go with my number 2 answers. 8.) Many apologies to all -- It seems that there are (at least) two different Pixies album. The one everyone seems to be commenting on is the more main-stream one, called "Where is My Mind" (with Reel Big Fish and Eve 6 and all the others). The one I'm familiar with is MUCH more "indie", named "Pixies Fuckin' Die!" and, wow, now that I'm looking at the track list, it has a lot of good people on it. To answer your question, my friend is LD Beghtol (whom many of you will know from the Magnetic Fields most recent release, 69 Love Songs); his band Moth Wranglers do "no. 13 baby" (the other MW person is a guy named Chris Xefos). Also on this album are Jarboe (of the Swans) and an electropop band from Chicago named Drekka (whom I'm friends with as well and didn't even realize are on this tribute!!) AND, even better, it's gotten the official seal of approval from Mr. Frank Black himself. Without trying to sound like I'm shamelessly promoting this album, it can be found online at CDNow.com and Amazon.com (search for "Pixies"). What i made was an observation about the listening habits of the list. I don't believe my musical tastes are any more valid than yours or anyone else on the list. i would say that my viewpoint is one that is under-represented on the list. I don't look down on others for not being the same way. i look down on people when they totally margininalize one particular type music of music and say that is of no value whatsoever, be it top 40, indy, rap/metal. The only value in a particular genre is what is placed there by the listener. just because a particular type of music doesn't float my boat doesn't mean it, to borrow a term from most of the alanis debate, "sucks". > Then why are you criticizing people and not just > letting them enjoy what > they enjoy, sans comments like "thank goodness there > are others on this list > who listen to a broad variety of musical flavors?" > Just let people like what > they want to like, and feel free to do your own > thing. There's no need to be > so critical. i think that reading the next sentence by jake will explain the thank goodness exclaimation "I really do get tired of hearing how so-and-so has no talent, and why is it that they are all over the radio." i think that about says it. pretty much anytime any artist with a modicum of commercial radio success is mentioned on the list it is usually in a negative context. jake isn't criticizing people's listening tastes, he's criticizing their lack of manners. i think that all jake and myself are asking for is the same coutesy that is extended when an artist like aimee mann or bic runga or whoever is discussed. for the most part it is thoughtful and respectful. imagine that. Just my own opinion but sometimes the list just devolves into a "too hip for the room contest". oh well later Robert ===== I'm Only Happy When It's Rains http://www.geocities.com/janetrains2000/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
