It's an excellent song, and it was great seeing Michael and Aimee trade verses when they performed it in Toronto last week. I had forgotten how much I'd loved it.... The song is indeed "Mother Mother," by Tracy Bonham, and it actually came out in 1996. I bought the album after some Rolling Stone writer described some of her songs as sounding like Liz, only to regret it when it turned out he was very much wrong. Sometimes I just have too much going on and don't get anywhere near e-mail for days at a time; hence it sometimes takes bounces quite a while to find their way to the list. I'm always reluctant to describe the music of any of the bands or artists I like as "pop," because most people just don't get what I mean by the term -- this would be a good way of putting it in context. "Pop" and "bubblegum" are not the same.... Although it might be amusing to see Michael Penn on Total Request Live.... ;) Cheers, Jase NP: Michael Penn, _MP4 (Days Since A Lost Time Accident)_ (the second-best album of the year so far, just behind Aimee Mann's _Bachelor No. 2_. Speaking of, whoever posted recently about "Ghost World" being reminiscent of a Liz song, I definitely agree, although "Susan" strikes me as being even more Liz-like, perhaps because of the conversational quality of the lyrics. Also certain couplets like "We kissed for a while to see how it played / And pulled the pin on another grenade" seem like lines Liz would write.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2000 01:16:39 EST From: GeekUSAPixies@aol.com Subject: Machina........ the best. It's on her Island records 1996 release, "The Burden of Being Upright." I'm thinkin'thinkin' that she's a hometown girl...from Portland Oregon, but am not certain, since I think I bought this CD & the Meridith "I'm a Bitch" Brooks CD roughly about the same time--and she is from the Portland area. *shrugs* "The Burden..." is decent, has a few weak moments, but a few really great songs--"Mother Mother", "Navy Bean" & a couple of others (It's probably been over a year since I've given it a listen...) Hope that helps ya!! And for those of you who are Melissa Auf Der Maur (geez, can I spell that any more wrong? hmmm) fans, there's this lame-ass fashion article about her in this months "Madamoiselle" (the one w/ Courtney Cox-Arquette on the cover), plus there's also talk of Aimee Mann's "Bachelor #2" release. I know, I know, fashion mags are NO place to get music news...or even fashion news for that matter! I like that many many people want to hear Liz singing male performed songs--too cool. I think I'd love to hear her singing Rod Stewarts "I'm Losin' You", or maybe a cover of Dylan's "I Want You"--although I adore Sophie's version. Becky wrote" "Go Your Own Way, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young "If I could, baby I'd give you my world." eh, not as good as Cinnamon Girl though." Fleetwood Mac, I'm thinking you mean--although Liz singing CSNY's "Teach Your Children" would be kind of groovy this point in her career. And do you know what? "Maybe I'm Amazed" WAS my wedding song. It was that one first, then a really pretty country song my husband chose by Sammy Kershaw. It was alot of fun, but for the life of me right now, I can't remember the name of it. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2000 08:09:06 -0500 From: "John O'Rourke" Subject: Xtra Aime Mann Cdrs I have two extra Aimee Mann cdrs. Yes, I do have this as well. It's pretty sad that they actually try to pass this off as a legit Whip-Smart tab book. Not only are the lyrics majorly wrong, but so is the actual tab itself. I learned how to play Liz's songs on guitar more by watching concert videos of her than I did by that tab book. It's a pretty sad book indeed. Speaking of guitar, I'm actually learning how to play Firewalker and Don't Apologize by watching the 4-12-99 Dekalb video. The chord progressions are really quite simple and are really fun to play. I used to be ashamed to admit it, but I am a big fan. I think both her albums are incredible - and all one has to do is listen to her LIVE cover of "ANGEL" to know she does have some credibility as a live performer. I don't know.. The chick only turned 22 a few short months after I did - - she is young and she became pretty damn famous, pretty damn fast - and her lyrics (I think) are very mature and they never come off as being pretentious. She *is* kind of embracing the whole "Ooooh I'm soooo different.." attitude... which doesn't work. Whenever I see her in interviews, she comes off as being a bit fake.. a bit pretentious... - whereas her music seems quite honest and pure and honestly poetic. I think she's just a girl with problems and they are coming out here and there. SHe always seems so defensive about something..most likely because she is placed under so much bloody scrutiny. I'd flip out too. Face it - she's a decent song writer - and she did luck out with some nifty producers... but one wouldn't work without the other. That's called chemistry. it's also called - Making decent records, and I do believe she does that. Poor gal does have some issues though... the NYC incident sounds pitiful, more than bitchy. I feel bad for her too... I have tickets to see her in Detroit City March 10th and I really hope she's...back on track by then... although I doubt it. WIth my luck she'll fucking cancel. Whatever. ALso - Kevin Smith movies. I love them all except that stupid fucking MALLRATS. CLERKS was intelligent, independent - it relied completely on writing and execution of lines. It worked completely. Hilarious!! The follow-up "MALLRATS" was a bit of a bigger budget, cheaper lines and I thought it was just juvenile. I thought it was Kevin Smith's entry into the world of stupidity. CHASING AMY I thought was absolutely brilliant - and DOGMA pleased me soooo much - I completely forgot about the atrocity that was Mallrats. The double-nipple scene made me chuckle..but that's about it. Too slapstick for me. He just seems like more of a "dialogue" kinda person. just nit-picking, DAN. PS - If anyone is in a mood for some mellow R&B-esque stuff..I recently picked up KELIS' debut album and it is REALLY coool. A bit of everything... any way - I'm gone. Not only is it super trippy, but up until I was maybe 7 I was under the illusion that the title was Allison Wonderland, so I was always psyched to hear my name in the title. (Of course I was confused that her name was Alice, but I assumed it was a nickname, just as ppl called me Alli.) I also enjoy Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, and Peter Pan. I was always scared to death of Snow White and when my grandmother took me to see it in theaters when I was 5 or 6 I spent the entire movie sitting backwards in my seat and looking at the light coming from the projector. When I went to Disneyworld, my brother got a picture with Snow White but I absolutely refused to be in a photo. I was a damn scary kid. The "Mother, Mother" song someone mentioned is probably "Mother, Mother" by tracy Bonham. I hated that song when I was in 6th grade for some reason. "I'm tired, I'm hungry, I'm bleeding to death...EVERYTHING'S FIIIIIIINE!!!!!!!" My favorite Disney film is Fantasia. I'm a huge fan of Laura Nyro so I was excited to see her named for cover songs but the more I think about it, the less I think Liz could pull it off. I could see if she turned Eli's Coming into a full rock song and really brought some guitar into it. Okay, now I'm changing my mind again and it would be cool... I always saw the setting of Divorce Song is a relationship where the two people have really grown apart but haven't admitted it yet. Then they go on a road trip which puts the two in a confined space for a long amount of time which is where they realize that it's truly over. I've always thought that road trips are gutsy moves because they will definitely tell you where you're at in a relationship. I think that's it from me. I'm probably forgetting something. I've been on the list for about six months, but I've never posted until now. I first of all just want to say that I love all of you! It is so inspiring to know that other people think about the kinds of things I think about, and find important the things that I find important, or if not important at least intriguing. I don't know a lot of people who like Liz, or who even like indie and alternative music anymore. It's depressing. But you all have renewed my hope in people's ability to seek out good music and not just follow trends. Secondly, I would like to comment on the whole Fiona Apple discussion. I agree that you should be able to separate an artist's personality from his/her music, but it's very hard to, especially when an artist pours so much of him/herself into the music, writing it, arranging it, performing it. It's very disappointing when you find out an artist whose music you love is really a jerk. You hold them up so highly, immune from any criticism, and then you find out the truth. I'm not a huge fan of Fiona Apple, and I never would judge her, but she definitely has some issues. This is why at 22 she is such a unique artist, however. She's been able to channel her pain and insecurities into something constructive like music and emerge with her own style. She definitely deserves credit. But when people pay money to see you perform, you better put on a damn good show. It's called professionalism, and apparently Fiona needs to work on this a little bit. I just want to know what Paul Thomas Anderson sees in her. He's such a brilliant man who has his shit together!!!! And if I can't have him, I definitely want to know why Fiona Apple can!! Thirdly, I'm a big Replacements fan and I would love to see Liz cover one of their songs, preferably "Kiss Me On the Bus" or "Answering Machine." Finally, my favorite Disney movie ever is "Lady and the Tramp". A cuter Disney film does not exist, and for a love story about two dogs it is very romantic. You know, the whole spaghetti scene:) I know some people on the list got sick of all the Aimee Mann posts, but thanks to those who posted about her, I now own all of Aimee's records, and am totally hooked on her!! She's wonderful!!
