I love Kevin Smith--i went to film school because of Clerks, Chasing Amy is one of my all-time favorites, and as a fan of the Sandman comics (any Gaiman fans out there?), i though Dogma was a blast. So forgive me for loving Mallrats too! Actually, Kevin walked into the shitty music store where i worked last summer (wheeling his baby girl Harley Quinn Smith), but i was too terrified to actually talk to him. Oh, well. Can't wait for that Clerks cartoon, looks like a killer... What can I say? You people give me funky dreams at night. OK. Iretract that comment on the grounds that I know too many of you will take that the wrong way. On the Kevin Smith topic... Kevin, Bryan, Walt, Jay & Posse are really cool guys. His films are excellent in my mind. Have been since I first saw Clerks many years ago. I was upset however that certain scenes were cut from Dogma. I realize that time is quite important in the success of a film, but damn! I guess what most upset me was the deletion of a scene in the strip club when Jay jumps behind the DJ booth and starts scratching while Silent Bob sings the "Fat Albert Theme" to cool down the gang leader. Come to think of it, nearly every successful artist has done the "Fat Albert Theme" on stage at some point in their career. Coincidence?!?!?! I mean, I REALLY hated it! I thought it was dumb drivel. She tries and tries to convince the guy that she's gay, "I'm gay, I'm gay, just accept it" and then falls for him? And that voice - aaaargh! Sorry, sure Joey's cute, but I can't take that voice for an entire film. I loved Clerks, my favorite moment is the "salsa shark." And one of the parts that made me squirm the most in Chasing Amy was another "Jaws" reference. Enough already with the Jaws references. I'm sure there was one in Mallrats, but I fell asleep during that. And, if disliking Chasing Amy wasn't enough, then Kevin Smith has gotta blast Magnolia - which was one of my favorite films last year. If Kevin Smith and Paul Thomas Anderson are gonna face off, ya betta believe I'm solidly in PTA's corner. The club is called Meow Mix, and it's on/ near Houston St, and close to Broadway in Manhattan. It's on the border of the Village, and SoHo. It's a lesbian bar, so I've never been there, but I have walked past it many a time. I had the same idea as Sandra... first of all, the song is called Divorce Song, sooo hypothetically they've already been married, and they are having problems getting along without that...everything is real tense without that security of knowing you are together. they are both jealous/upset, and overly-defensive, as described by the first stanza (is that what its called?) when she talks about how yeah she stole the lighter but she was pissed off cause he hurt her feelings...she lost the map but she didn't wanna admit it because she didn't wanna look stupid because now they have to put on all these fronts...and it all escalates because then he takes offense and says something worse and it gets nastier and nastier....blah blahblah. :and the license said ya had to stick around until i was dead but if you're tired of looking at my face i guess i already am: these lines are so stunning, the most quotable lines, IMO, from EIG. ah i would type more, but long posts don't agree with me and i have already spent enough time writing this. i dont understand the other ways in which this song is interpreted but yeah, to each his own.. - -Jaimee- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 16:53:24 EST From: MaryChristineK@aol.com Subject: Re: divorce song The line, "You put in my hand a loaded gun. . . and told me not to fire it. . ." is a perfect analogy for the negative reactive responses to a bad relationship. It cuts the actively cruel party some slack, and recognizes that both are equally responsible for the status of the relationship. It is about time that people realize that. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 17:57:19 EST From: JJewelbaby@aol.com Subject: Re: support-system-digest V3 #55 > ~Emily > P.S. I am studying abroad next quarter in Tours, France and I was just wondering if anyone would be willing to offer advice on cool things/ record shops/ clubs/etc in either France, England, or Italy. I know this question is extremely vague! But, I am planning on doing lots of traveling and advice about cool stuff would be appreciated! :) Please email me privately about it. While watching Dawson's Creek tonite, I noticed there was a WCSE poster hanging in AJ's room (Joey's b-friend). Pretty cool I thought, especially when you could see it clearly, instead of it being blurred in the background. The new Smashing Pumpkins cd is really cool, I can't stop playing it.
