Just as I'm reading Al's list of women musicians, I'm thinking "PJ Harvey, PJ Harvey..." as my eyes scroll down. Then, as I'm just about to prepare a bitty email, I read in the very next paragraph: From: tommyk7@excite.com Subject: Re: Looking... If you're going to list Liz first, then you should purchase some (all) of PJ Harvey's CDs and put her second." Yep, just what I would've said. PJ Harvey, get some now. And, the new Fiona is wonderful. Not a song on there that I don't like in one way or another. Just before that Valerie piped in about the Grammy awards. "...against my better judgment, i watched the grammys for a few minutes last night. " I did the same, it was either that or two fairly identical "Who wants to (Fill in the blank-win some money/look like a dork on national TV when you miss the question that a Chow Chow is a dog/fullfil some egotistical urge you've got)" with Regis Philbin, sorry, I despise that man. Anyway, I must've turned it on right after Jenifer Lopez had been on, because Rosie was poking fun at her attire. I enjoyed the Dixie Chicks performance, I always get a kick out of that "Earl..." song. Then was Ricky Martin. Big f'in' deal. Yep, he's a nice little package to look at but come on... Then I think Whitney Houston came onstage, looking like she's been way too influenced by Bobby and maybe...hmm...Rick James? What the hell? I'm a leather fan, but she looked uncomfortable, too hot and it didn't fit her right. And she sounded bad, in my humble opinion. Although I did laugh outloud when Rosie intoduced her and said something like "A big fan of the Doobies, Whitney Houston..." *tee hee hee* Then there was the Backstreet Boys little Grammy winning medely. I flipped the tube off & went to sleep. Two T.V's, but only one get satellite, the other *the one I was watching* gets four channels. Oh well. I was glad that Sting beat out Ricky Martin, however. I've seen Sting live a couple of times, and although he's now moved into a more "mellow", MOR type of music, I still like him, and he still rocks in concert. Then Valerie commented: "haven't been able to take fiona's "pawn" CD out of my car player this week. i'm addicted." Me too, I even taped it so I can listen to it on my tiny player at work--The whole CD just rambles, and when it's over, I'm always a bit surprised, like "That's the end?" "Mistake" (God, is that the title, I haven't put it back in, or even looked at the jewel case since I took it out nearly two months ago!), "Love Ridden" and "Paper Bag" are just wonderful melodic and uniquely arranged pieces. I disagree with the whole lot of you. = ) Don't get me wrong; this is cool! I don't have fightin' on the brain or anything. Disagreement #1: I can't believe that I am so in the minority with Divorce Song. I guess we interpret depending on our own experiences. I've always admired the girl in the song for being so 'strong' to keep the breakup a breakup (the divorce a divorce, if you will), by insisting that they sleep separately and not extend the relationship into a six-month-long we're-broken-up-because-we-know-it-won't-work-but-we're-still-going-to-drag-it-out-by-sleeping-together-for-the-next-six-months. I have so been there, which is probably why I interpreted it that way. I was always the weak one who gave into the post-breakup liaisons. This Liz character in the song was my hero: "Look, we gotta drive together, cause it makes sense, but let's not go there, ok? We broke up for a reason." Makes me want to ask: Did ANYONE interpret it my way? Disagreement #2: I *so* detested that scene in Chasing Amy where she sang. I thought she was a horrible singer and that the song was lame, and it was a clear case of "I am Kevin Smith and this is my movie and I love my girlfriend so she can sing her song in it if she wants to. Plus, I'm whipped, so I think it's a good song, even though deep down I know it sucks." (makes me want to download that mp3, just so i can see if I agree with myself still) But I *loved* the movie, and as a rule, I pretty much love Joey Lauren Adams. Disagreement #3: Dogma blew. I was so disappointed, cause I had really looked forward to it. I kept hoping it would get better, but it didn't. Remember, folks, freedom to express differing opinions is what makes this country -- and this list -- great. ; ) sandra __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Aimee Mann Musician On Rough Cut Question: Are pain and misery necessary components for good songwriting? Aimee: No. Pain and misery make it really difficult to write. You can write about pain and misery, but not while you are in pain and miserable.. Question: Why do you write songs... is it a job, a calling, or even something you enjoy because you are so good at it? Aimee: I write because I really enjoy trying to encapsulate a difficult idea into 3 minutes.
