I always saw Divorce Song the way your friend sees it (the friends --> lovers way.) In fact, much as that never occurred to you before, your interpretation never occurred to me before. I probably read it the way I did because when I first started listening to Liz, I was totally in love with my best friend and it was kind of tormenting me. Not surprisingly, Divorce Song became my favorite song. (Incidentally, I went on to date her for three years, but it took seven somewhat agonizing months of friendship before we started dating. The breakup ended up being pretty spectacularly ugly but we're friends again now.) It's interesting, years later, to consider a totally different interpretation of the song. I'll have to think about it. Reese wrote: > also, leaving california is supposed to be in the [Chasing Amy], but i > can't find it. anyone know where it is? In the scene where they swing on the swingset, the song is playing in the background. I think it's a pretty short sound clip. "it's harder to be friends than lovers and you shouldn't try to mix the two 'cause if you do it and your still unhappy then you know that the problem is you" to me that is speaking of someone who is not/has not been your lover. they have been friends, and then they take this road trip and the guy feels put out because she got a separate room. he thought they had been having a great time and was hoping for a hook-up. now he feels like she has been leading him on with all of her flirting and playfulness. then they get into this argument (lighters and maps, etc.) and it kills the mood of the trip. so, I think your take is interesting, and I can see how you would get that out of the song. funny how much that would apply to MY life at the moment. I should have come up with it on my own, but I get so stuck in my past interpretations sometimes. >Wesley Rocks. Rock over London, Rock on Chicago I remember hearing he did a song about her. I saw him about five years ago and had never heard of him before, and I walked away not really knowing what to think. I will never forget him grunting out "rock over london, rock on champaign-urbana." he reminded me of aaron neville on crack. no offense to his fans, I'm sure he is simply an acquired taste. I was down in st.louis this weekend and I went cd shopping, and as always, I looked to see what liz phair they had. If I had to pick one song that I think Liz Phair should cover, it definitely would be Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". It's perfect for her in many ways. First of all, the music fits right in with her moody-chord-bending sound. Second, the lyrics are introspective, cynical, and revealing. And lastly, it's very catchy. Not only do I recommend Steely Dan to all the readers to this list, but give "Rikki" a spin and decide for yourself if it would be the quintessential song for Liz to cover. Mighty Mighty Bosstones are on the soundtrack too, they introduce the main part of the film, where various shots of Red Bank NJ are shown. And to see the town you live in on the big screen like that, since RB is a small town,is amazing. Not to brag but I live in Red Bank, NJ and to see shots of Jacks (local record store) and other parts of the town was, as I say, amazing. The loft where Holden and Binky work, the second floor of Jacks. The scene where it's poring rain and Holden and Allysia get together, filmed on Mechanic Street, where I work, at the NJ center for the healing arts, a holistic coulseling center. Right in front of it. Pretty sure the scene where Liz's song is playing is in Marine Park, where all the boats dock on the Navsink river, at the end of town. Kevin owns a store in town, Jay and Silent Bob, a comic book store, good store, especially for KS stuff. Thanks to y’all, I’ve got lots of Liz at this point, and there are only a few things I’m still looking for, most of which I’m negotiating now. But I’m still happy to share the love with others. Some people who don’t have any Liz stuff to trade are offering to make me mix tapes or CDs, and I’m happily, eagerly taking them up on it. I really like this idea. A lot. I appreciate so many different kinds of music (as most of us Lizsters do), but I’d never take the initiative to really go out and buy all the stuff I want to try out. Plus, I just lived through a major rejection, catapulting my so-darn-great-for-five-months life into a long-overdue slump. I’ve gotta wipe my mind of certain music at this point. I think we all know how that goes. But I’m so not into making the effort to find new stuff to replace it. I find myself feeling like this every few months, it seems. So I propose: it would be great to formalize this music sharing thing. Informally, of course. If anyone wants to expose me to music they think I’d might not otherwise hear –- and should -- I’d love to hear it in the form of a mix or whatever. And same goes for me –- I’ll share whatever people want a taste of. Before anyone decides to bellyache about not paying the artists their royalties, hush. I think we all know darn well that if we like someone, we’re going to go out and buy their music, and if we don’t, we won’t. Plus, I’m in survival mode here, man. Cut me some slack. Ah, something to consider, anyway. - -sandra who is still trying to figure out why, exactly, this rejection thing, like ... happened. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
