He got me into Heather Nova, and I got him into Liz. Our tastes are different though. He worships Oasis while I love a lot of the singers/bands we talk about on this list (Beth Orton, Aimee Mann, and then a few more too)... The question was posed: anyone with older siblings: did your older brother/sister's musicical interests influence you? if so, name a few of the bands..." Then, Melody said: "I AM the older sibling that influenced my younger sister as far as music goes. " I'm in this same boat as well. I've two brothers, both younger than me by 4 & 5 years, respectively. And I sort of laugh when I think of the musical collections that evolved from our household. I was more influenced by my parents record collection. Mom loved the popular stuff of her day--The Beatles (between the two of us, we wore thru two album copies of Sgt. Pepper), The Rolling Stones, Lovin' Spoonful & some Cream. My father was more the Farm boy meets Surfer Dude with Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and tons of Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and the Ventures. Their tying bond was Johnny Rivers & CCR. But more than anything, I was influenced by a program called "Much Music" (still around) that we received on the satellite dish when I was around 12 or 13. Sure, I liked MTV...and watched it also, but I switched back & forth alot. Much Music played alot more of the music that was popular overseas--The Smiths, The Cure, Siouxie, U2, Duran Duran. Plus they played some cool Canadian musicians as well, like Jane Siberry & Marillion (hmm, I'm not sure if he's Canadian or not?) I used to write down the names of songs & artists that I'd never heard of and further investigate their music elsewhere--this is how I "discovered" Echo & the Bunnymen and Psychedelic Furs long before they were popular stateside--at least where I live. I did not, however leave much of an impression upon my brothers. One listed purely to rap music (Has now switched to country-western) and the other listened to a rap/pop/c-w combo. We were born on a farm, so the c-w stuff just came naturally to us, some of it we could relate to...and some of it, of course, was just plain corny. And hey, I remember singing along with "Lucky Star"--And I could dance along to the entire video as well...*laugh* I didn't realize I was such a big Madonna fan until one day in my mid-20's I'd amassed quite a large music collection & was attempting to organize them. I found I had a copy of every thing Madonna had released & didn't even realize it. Hmm...subversive tactics maybe?? Okay *deep breath* ...All for now. Toodle--f'in'--oo. Johnson" Subject: My fashion statement I have some doubts about the alleged premise of listing one's favorite 10 albums (we both like Liz, so you might like some of my other favorite music). That could be true, but I think posting our fav albums is more like a fashion statement, a way of telling others what kind of persons we are (sophisticated, earthy, iconoclastic, etc.) We then hope someone who sees our fashion statement will think we are cool. Whatever. This thread at least gave me an excuse to re-catalog my music. The last time I did that was before personal computers were invented. After a few data sorts I came up with my top 15, with the restriction of one album per artist. But the funny thing about influencing my bro and sis is that they've taken to things a couple years after I get the CD for them. Like I got my bro Pearl Jam's Ten and Vs. and three years later - boom! How about that Pearl Jam, he said. And my sister with Fiona Apple and Tori Amos. How about that Fiona and Tori, she said. Still working on Liz, though. My brother was the one who got me started in listening to any sort of music at all way back when. Recently, he's turned me onto Tom Waits and Neurotic Outsiders. Tom Waits is his favorite, so just to bug him I try not to let him know just how much I like to listen to him. And, the Neurotic Outsiders are possibly one of the best bands I've heard in a long time. Their one album is proof that STeve Jones was the genius behind the Sex Pistols. I kind of like it, actually, for those bands you don't get to see in a small venue." I guess I shouldn't be too tough on the Orpheum. They do get cool acts and I saw some really good shows there. I just feel like most, if not all, of those acts could play just as easily in a cooler venue on Lansdowne. The biggest gripe for me with the Orpheum is the seats. I just feel like I shouldn't be sitting at a rock show. Two examples gleened from experience: it's fine if you're a seeing a band like the Cowboy Junkies there, but it's all wrong if you're seeing a band like Sugar. And it's one of those venues where, if pretty much everybody isn't standing, then really no one should be standing. But let us please not get back into a debate about whether or not one should stand at a show when everyone behind him/her is sitting... - --Mark NP: _I Am Shelby Lynne_ (could the British music press possibly have more of a hard on about this one?) - -- *********************************************************************** "They don't know what they like so much about it.
