I just thought of something. Considering we know Liz knows that the list exists, and I know a couple people on the list have contacts with people who know Liz, if Liz wasn't touring, wouldn't it be great if she would do a special private Liz Phest show? I know it would make people want to go more, which means Liz would be able to play a show in front of a bunch of people who love her and her music. Wishful thinking. Well, I bought Fight Songs and was really disappointed. I saw them on Austin City Limits and really thought they were cool and then bought the cd and have only listened to it a couple of times. Maybe that they only seemed cool to me live. i don't know. On my take on the Farrar/ Tweedy problem, I think they are really apples and oranges. It was really clear on the Anodyne CD that Uncle Tupelo had two very different musical directions tugging on it. Anyone that listens to Son Volt and Wilco can see that they were an equal split and that the music of either band is different from the other. Wilco has gone in a more pop direction and Son Volt has gone in a more rocking direction. Or that is what it seems to me. I think they are both good equally, but for different reasons. And I know this isn't the first time Ani's toured here, I'm pretty sure she came here last year and LIZ has never toured here. Ani's even coming to where I live, Adelaide. Yes Liz please come here, if Ani gets people at her concert you will definitely be able to. To whoever told me about Julia Darling, sorry I forget bad memory, I saw her on Channel V here the other day. And, well I feel sorry for her. I get the idea that the evil people at her company have a) encouraged her to lose weight (judging from her picture on her album cover, on which she looks thin anyway), b) made her wear ridiculous clothes like those stupid what I like to call hankerchief tops (no offense to anyone who wears them) and c) made her wear makeup and put her hair up in a girl group manner of way. If I was in a band, I wouldn't wear makeup, I never wear makeup now because in my opinion women are expected to wear makeup and love it and spend heaps of $$$ on it. Grrr don't get me started. As for Tweedy/Farrar, I probably enjoy Tweedy's music and show performance better. But nothing is better that when they were together. One of my only brags in life was that I saw Uncle Tupelo on their final tour. I was a fan before, but after that I was in awe. They were so ... I can't even describe it. I've since seen Wilco and Son Volt a few times. I hadn't heard of the Tweedy/Liz or Tweedy/J Mascis possibilities (I am a bit out of the loop-thats why I joined you guys!) but either of those would be dreamy. Yes, to them it was, but to the entertainment industry, it was just another way to make some cash. How many movies of those times featured clones of Dylan, Baez, et al? And didn't the popular acts of that time cause changes in dress and style throughout the country? And, the people you mention are now considered major and influential, but didn't really become consistant multi-million sellers until much later. At the time, the popular press considered them revolutionary, reactionary, and something to be wary of. The real top recording artists of, say 1965, were The Beatles, Roger Miller, Petula Clark, Herman's Hermits, Rolling Stones and Tom Jones. > in the early days of labels, they were still, for the most part, on the > artist's side. there was still the attitude that "hey, i can help get > this great music out there...." Maybe labels like A&M (which was co-owned by an artist, Herb Alpert), jazz's Blue Note and a few others, but I gotta disagree with you on the whole. Motown was notorious for squeezing every penny it could from it's roster (and no one would call them 'minor' in the '60s). Columbia and the other major labels would routinely demand unrealistic changes to albums, often changing the intended sound the band was trying to present. They had whole rooms full of songwriters who would knock out hundreds of songs each month for bands to record, and these songs had mothing to do with what the band wanted (see the movie "Grace Of My Heart" for a fairly accurate representation of this process.) Mike Nesmith of The Monkees publically battled their label, Screen Gems (I think) for years because the label was forcing them to release songs that were deemed radio friendly and marketable, rather than letting them perform their own original material. And the royalties all labels paid to acts were almost nil, forcing the acts to pump out one albums and several singles each year, and to continuously tour to support these releases. To this day, artists from the '50s and '60s are fighting these companies for fair royalties and other reimbursements so that they can afford to buy things like health insurance , medical care and food. Bands that were not producing the levels of revenue the labels expected were quickly dumped. > ... it's just gonna get easier for DIYers. thank god almighty. On this I agree completely, with the prediction AND the sentiment. It's indeed a wonderful time for people who are willing to look beyond the latest Billboard Top 200 list, (or this year, Grammy nominations). > From: christine > next questions: is there a special word for people who haven't seen Liz? > virgins just dont cut it later Don't have a word suggestion, but how about the phrase "those that don't live in the NorthEast United States"? > From: Jason Long > And speaking of Michael Penn, his new album, _MP4 > Aimee contributes backing vocals to a few of Penn's new songs, so you > may even want to check it out just for that reason alone. Also, even though we will not have determined a date, we should still start making some plans ahead of time as to things to check out at some point during the weekend, finding potential places where the musicians can play, and also looking into pricing for accommodations. It would probably also be a good idea to determine about how many people would consider attending --having some numbers to work with may make the rest of the planning easier.<< I have to agree with Jase here. Getting some numbers would be a great idea. Who knows when Liz would even announce tour dates. It all depends on the completion of the new album, and who knows when that'll be. However, I agree we should wait awhile to set an exact date just to see what happens. Jase, if you want, I can help you coordinate some stuff for the LizPhest. Does anyone else want to help us with the coordination? Perhaps some people on the list who actually live in Chicago can answer some of these questions for us as far as what to do, where to go, ect.... Is there anyone who could help us with these things? This is my most SURPRISING Liz moment. I gave EIG to a friend a couple of months ago. Last weekend, she confessed that she likes to "wake up" in the morning to "Flower." The song lights her match. She plays it over and over until her morning task is complete. Is this a common reaction? Should I buy a box of Exile CDs and hand them out on street corners? The world might be a better place. 2) I'm in for Liz Phest but I agree with Paige and Jase that it should center on a Liz Chicago show. Meeting Liz people at the Lounge Ax show was one of my highlights of '99. 3) Hey, who sings this great song? It has ringing guitars and starts with the line, "I don't know why I love you." I used to know it but I have amnesia and it's killing me. 4) Jason, you are money. Every suggestion of yours that I have followed has been a winner. I bought the Magnolia soundtrack and love it. I plan on seeing the movie Saturday. 5) Video note: Check out Run Lola Run and The Red Violin. They rock. 6) My birthday is March 24 and I'm having a party Sat. March 25.
