The major labels are good for mass distribution of popular artists > - -- but we've covered this when Seagrams bought everything that wasn't > nailed to the floor, didn't we? > i realized after i sent in my post that i should have super-qualified that last part.... so, here it is: in the immediate future the majors are gonna handle almost exclusively these large vegas-style acts.... and only ones that are gonna make money. because all the majors are part of multimedia conglomerates. they gotta be able to make money through videos and movies as well. these days majors only make sense for this type of act and/or those who don't write their own material. signing over copyright is a BIG issue--it's totally fucked. the only other thing majors have to offer, we are still told, is distribution, and, like i pointed out in my earlier post, this is where i think they're gonna fuck with indies--it's really the only place they can. and they're in a big hurry to do this because the distribution issue, to my mind, is *quickly* becoming moot, due to the mp3 thing and the fact that many artists have figured out how to effectively deal with getting their CDs in stores. it takes alot of hard work to do all this yourself, but, again, to sign over copyright to your own material and then not be able to get it back once THEY drop YOU..... ummm, no. so, i guess maybe that's what i'm asking. what really do majors have to offer to most artists anymore? also, popular music has NOT always been about this type of "act." think back to the 60s, especially dylan, joni, and baez. singer-songwriter-and-guitar. simple. this stuff was HUGE. then came bowie and velvet underground, but to them it was about performance art, not "entertainment." in the early days of labels, they were still, for the most part, on the artist's side. there was still the attitude that "hey, i can help get this great music out there...." that really started changing toward the end of the 70s, and then once we were into the 80s, forget it, it was all business. after that labels couldn't give a fuck who or what you once were or are now, if you're not makin' the numbers, you're out. joni mitchell is a rare exception (i'm pretty sure her case was mentioned before on this list) because she has been really good friends with david geffen for, like, 35 years now. so, i think the term "popular artist" is just gonna be narrowed down that much more as a result of all these changes. it's gonna refer to all these "boys" acts and girls who wanna strut their stuff. everyone else is gonna go their own way and just be themselves. and, unless the majors assemble a phalanx of lawyers, which they probably have, it's just gonna get easier for DIYers. thank god almighty. dp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 15:52:34 EST From: Nach1120@aol.com Subject: im in love! After Valerie posted about seeing the premiere of the "Save Me" video on 120 Minutes, I offered to make her a "sampler" of some of Aimee's other work. I'm more than happy to do the same for others who might be interested in hearing some of her music, although due to time constraints, it may take me several days to make the tape and mail it out. >and lastly, what is this damn lizphest? Originally the idea for Liz Phest came about in a post that Cindy made a year ago, and a lot of us were talking about organizing the event for last summer, but due to various reasons, it didn't quite get off the ground as planned. It was intended to be a weekend gathering in Chicago for anyone from the list who wanted to meet up and hang out. Some possible ideas for things to do had included touring Wicker Park and other Liz-related sites of interest and also lining up a place one of the nights for any list members who are musicians to perform Liz covers for everyone or jam together. I'm not certain that I'll be able to make it to the Phest this year if it does happen, but the odds are looking better than they did for last year. Regardless, I wouldn't mind helping to plan it, even if I can't be there. Does anyone else want to help organize this or even go ahead with it? Summer is still quite far off, but it wouldn't hurt to start kicking around some ideas. Unfortunately now that Matador is no longer distributing either title, they are no longer being pressed on vinyl. However, check all of your local indie stores or find any music retailers on the web that deal in vinyl -- it's quite possible that they will still have some remaining stock. And if worse comes to worst, you could always try eBay -- I've seen both EIG and WS on vinyl auctioned there in the past. Whereas i wouldn't exactly call Runaway Bride a >small, personal, arty film. Actually, Magnolia went into wide release nearly a month ago, on January 7. So far, it hasn't fared as well at the box office as it deserves to, but it is a fairly challenging film and definitely not light entertainment by any means. Also hampering the film's success is its R-rating, which limits its potential audience (although I guess it is fair to say that I couldn't imagine too many younger moviegoers wanting to go see such an "out there" film anyway), and its three-hour running time; instead of two evening showings, most theatres only have one. Anyway, it is an incredibly brave piece of filmmaking and one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time. Go see it if you get the chance; I'll be seeing it for the fourth time this weekend myself. (No, I'm not that much of a Magnolia junkie, but I keep coming across friends who have yet to see it but want to, and I end up going with them. And, hell, there are much worse ways to spend $8 and a few hours of my time.) Speaking of Magnolia, the soundtrack is continuing its upward climb on the Billboard album chart. This week, it has moved up ten positions to #58. Hopefully next week, it will finally land in the top 40. I agree that we should wait before setting a date, but I think we should still go ahead with a gathering even if Liz doesn't tour this summer. Also, even though we will not have determined a date, we should still start making some plans ahead of time as to things to check out at some point during the weekend, finding potential places where the musicians can play, and also looking into pricing for accommodations. It would probably also be a good idea to determine about how many people would consider attending -- having some numbers to work with may make the rest of the planning easier. >In the meantime, any supporters going to see Aimee >Mann and Michael Penn at Liz haunt Lupo's in >Providence in a couple weeks? I'm flying in myself (a >birthday present) to see the show and I'd love to meet >fellow supporters there! Talk Liz and all... I might try to attend this show if I'm able to, but I won't know for another couple of days. I had originally wanted to make it to one of the Philadelphia shows, but both present scheduling conflicts for me that I wouldn't be able to work around. My choice now is to try to find another show that I can make it to, or hold out until Aimee tours in the spring, which is longer than I'd like to wait. And speaking of Michael Penn, his new album, _MP4 (Days Since A Lost Time Accident)_, was released yesterday. Anyone who likes Aimee Mann's work should also find his music enjoyable; they seem to share a lot of the same influences -- in particular, the Beatles. Aimee contributes backing vocals to a few of Penn's new songs, so you may even want to check it out just for that reason alone.
