We children of the '70s have had no choice but to hear Roxy Music. And while _Siren_ is very good indeed, I prefer _Avalon_. I thought RM was a lot more enjoyable after they stopped recording with Eno, and finally stopped recording like they still had Eno with them. Less pretentious, more honest. But Ferry's solo work just leaves me bored. from Katie ();) in Orlando > A big hug to all Bob Dylan fans. Perfect example, > waiting in line for Bruce Springsteen tixs this > morning, The Boss is still touring? I thought it ended in November. Now I've got to rearrange my schedule to get to one of his shows. And I saw Bob Dylan this past summer with Paul Simon. And though I eventually recognized every song Dylan did, nearly none of them sounded as they were originally recorded on his albums. Very disappointing. I thought Simon put on a much better show. from dp > major record companies are gonna go bye-bye; all the big huge acts are > gonna be owned by movie studios, which--what am i saying?--they are now > anyway. i mean, that's what it's about these days: That's what popular music has always been about. And these mergers won't change that fact, nor will they drive out original artists from the music field. The major labels are good for mass distribution of popular artists - -- but we've covered this when Seagrams bought everything that wasn't nailed to the floor, didn't we? and from From: Jason Long > I'd find it interesting, if there seemed to be any truth to it. [snip] > Am I the only one to whom all of this rings untrue? I have to agree with everything you said on this one, Jason. You'd think that someone with the email address that this Alex has would be more accurate with LP information. from that JPK, Esq fella > Granted, pure speculation, but it isn't entirely impossible > for the underdog to overtake the fatcats. Not in amerika (and since the rest of the world's econmies are becoming more and more amerikanized, everywhere else too.) Money rules, everything else is up for sale. And as these companies get bigger and richer, they'll have more control over the masses. But that's not the end for independent music. Since 90% of the world's population are sheep, doing whatever their televisions tell them to do, it's up to the remaining 10% of us to keep good (vice popular) music alive. I am happy to report that I have solved half my problem; I'll be seeing Aimee Mann (and I own NONE of her albums! mygod! sacrelige!) and hubby Michael at Lupo's in Providence (where I saw sweet Liz last spring) the next night. And I bought a ticket to the Old 97s, in the hope that Beck might finish early enuf for me to make it over to that club. it's a stretch, but we will try to be super-human. super-woman, I mean." Boy, does this suck. Sometimes there are just too many shows to see, but it looks like you came up with a pretty good solution. I actually have tix for both Beck/Beth and Aimee/Michael here in the DC area where, fortunately, the shows are on different nights. I saw Old 97s when they opened for Wilco @ the 9:30 Club in November. I haven't picked up an album yet, but they were great live. Can anyone tell me more about them or recommend an album? Do they have more than one? As a former Boston resident, I have to say that, IMHO, the Orpheum is a sucky place to see a show. Does anyone else think so? Don't get me wrong, the Patriot Center (where Beck & Beth are playing down here) sucks too, but at least it's general admission that night. Did anyone get to see Beck when he played @ 9:30 in December as part of the WHFS holiday nutcracker? I tried to get tix very hard but to no avail. I did see a pair on eBay for something like $250, though. I passed.
