I periodically ask her about any new releases b/c she would know first b/c the labels call her up and order the booklets that go in the CD's and promotional posters, etc. Anyway, I asked her about a possible Liz release in spring of 2000 and she said that her label called and originally ordered 100,000 copies printed up for her new record. Then a few weeks later they called back and reduced the order to 20,000 units. Why? *shrug* I just thought you might find that interesting. - --Alex "If I abstain from fun and such I'll probably amount to much; but I shall stay the way I am because I do not give a damn." --Dorothy Parker ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 09:38:43 -0500 (EST) From: B Subject: Re: support-system-digest V3 #23 hi guys, i go to vassar, and although i'm not there right now so i can't say for certain, it seems super doubtful that liz would play there this spring. actually i was on vice (the activities committee) my freshman year and the first thing discussed was bringing liz, and, of course, it never happened. vice is a big poopyhead organization that never gets anyone good. secondly, i have met about 2 people at vassar who like liz (although i have converted like 10 more :) ) so it seems doubtful. but in any case i know some pretty high-up peoples in vice and i will email them and keep you guys posted. of course, with my luck, liz *will* play at vassar the semester i'm not there... :) bina ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 08:49:47 -0800 From: Shelly Subject: Welcome... I know it's as if she doesn't exist. The only time I have heard mention of her on the TV or radio is when Joe Whiley and Steve Lamaq played 'Supernova' on Radio 1 - I couldn't believe it. The only other time was when I was in Australia and WCSE was the album of the week on some radio station in Sydney. Before I got a PC and modem I used to have to check the music stores under 'Indie - P' every fortnight to see if a new album had come out as news on Liz is hardly ever in the musical press here. What an unexpected surprise I had when I found WCSE one day having never heard rumors of its arrival. The shop only had it on vinyl for some bizzare reason! I now own it on CD though and am trying to find EIG on Vinyl as I know they had it once and I think it would be a pretty good collectors piece (and EIG is my favorite album ever by a mile - I don't have any other album I've had for so long and still listen to, except 'The Stone Roses' maybe). Having said that I bought EIG after it got 9/10 in the NME paper. I hadn't heard of Liz or any of her songs and I thought 'what the hell' and skived the afternoon of school to buy it - It was my most productive school day ever! The first song I remember liking was 'Soap Star Joe' - I just played it over and over. Fave songs now - Mesmerising, Stratford-on-guy, Uncle Alverez, Headache, Freak of Nature and Wasted. Then a few weeks later >they called back and reduced the order to 20,000 units. Why? *shrug* I >just thought you might find that interesting. I'd find it interesting, if there seemed to be any truth to it. Let's think about this for a second. First of all, Liz is not signed to Matador, and hasn't been for nearly a year now. Even if she were, Matador has not had ties to Warner since their distribution deal with Atlantic ended in the spring of '96. Secondly, Liz is on Capitol, a label distributed by EMI, which has now merged with Time Warner -- just this past week, though. I doubt all this much activity -- the shift from 100,000 units to 20,000 happened in less than one week. Also, I doubt the label would be making too many decisions about an album that they have not heard, and for that matter, hasn't even been completed yet. Kind of hard to judge the commercial potential of a record that technically doesn't even exist in any sort of finished form. Also, if they had that little faith in Liz's potential, they'd be more apt to just drop her outright. And here's the big common sense one: _Whip-Smart_ sold 34,000 copies in its first week of sales, while _whitechocolatespaceegg_ sold 39,000. Why would a label press fewer copies than they are bound to sell in just the first week alone? It just makes no sense whatsoever, especially since Liz has made many new fans since the release of the last record. Am I the only one to whom all of this rings untrue? This is pure speculation, but I've noticed a lot of talk about big companies taking over music and destroying the indie rock scene and other such things. Well, here's a possible outcome I thought I'd throw out there: In 1999 we saw the biggest change in the movie world. In the past, artsy poetic movies like American Beauty, Blair Witch, Eyes Wide Shut, and Magnolia would be heralded by critics but seen by only a select few, while blockbusters along the line of Wild Wild West and Lake Placid would tear up the box office and be almost guaranteed to make a huge profit. Instead, it was the artsy movies I mentioned that drew in all the money and people while the blockbusters (especially Wild Wild West) crashed and bombed. Is it possible that the same wave could overtake the music scene eventually? Granted, pure speculation, but it isn't entirely impossible for the underdog to overtake the fatcats.
