When I respond, I'm just holding my ground on something that shouldn't have been challenged. >And I'm sticking to my guns about what I've said: sticking to one "off" >topic is OLD and tired. Maybe for you that's the case when that "off" topic is Aimee Mann. However, during the Great Alanis Debate, you didn't seem to have any problems with it; heck, you seemed to be having a good time adding fuel to the fire. Why the change of heart now? >And I wouldn't fucking blame anybody if they >deliberately steered away from Liz because I annoyed them day after day >with every detail I could think of about her. And furthermore I never >talked about anything else BUT Liz. I've talked about many other subjects apart from Aimee; in fact, over week ago, I sent two posts that contained Liz content as well, along with talk of other artists. I can't help it that people chose to respond to what I wrote about Aimee, and not anything else I covered. >And @ least griping about the shitty state of the list is content >different from that of the past month. Sigh. And the reason people-- >well, at least this goes for me-- are so adamant about posting their >discontent with the list is so that maybe that will clue people in to >start trying to talk about other things. Griping about the content of the list doesn't change anything, though. If anything, it only makes matters worse. It doesn't get people to talk about other things; it just leads to debate like this and a lot more discontent -- on both sides. If people really want more Liz content or to discuss a different subject, the key is to post something about that topic that will get the ball rolling. It's not that difficult to get the pendulum to swing back the other way. >And if Aimee does become big and gets "shoved down [my] throat" as Jase >wishes, it'll probably only serve to make me gag. Nicole, if you might have looked closely enough, you would have seen a certain emoticon at the end of that paragraph that might have indicated that I wasn't being completely serious.... Anyway, as for everyone else, Aimee content is welcome on the list. Deal with it. But a lot of other content is welcome as well. Off-topic posting has always been allowed on this list, and will continue to be. What annoys me most is how some people -- mostly through private e-mail -- have accused me of being a dictator. That's not the case. I'm not the one telling people not to talk about certain things; I'm telling people not to tell people not to talk about certain things. There's a difference. I'm not trying to silence anyone, just to keep people from trying to silence others and taking away their right to talk about whatever they want to talk about. If you don't like a particular subject, delete or scroll through any messages related to it. But at the very least, extend the same courtesy I've always given -- while I don't care for a lot of the subjects that get talked about on the list, I don't demand that people stop discussing them. If people want to ban all postings about Aimee Mann, I can only think that fair is fair and all other off-topic posts would have to be restricted as well. And that's just not going to happen here. I know there are a number of people who probably joined this list to find out the latest news on Liz Phair, but I think even more joined to reach out to like-minded people. This list, although not so much lately, has always been about community. Part of establishing that community has been through the subscribers getting to know one another, and a lot of that has been through the off-topic content of the list. A lot of friendships have been struck up as a result, and that sense of community is why so many of us meet up at shows and why we tried to organize the Liz Phest gathering in Chicago last summer. I know in one of the posts I made earlier this weekend, I expressed my disappointment that this list isn't quite what it used to be. Although I was frustrated at the time and it's something I've been holding back from saying, I maybe still should have kept it to myself. I think that part of why I feel the way I do is because the atmosphere isn't quite the same here now. I think the best example of this I could point to is that when TMK posted just after the New Year about making Liz Phest happen this summer, there was not one response to what he wrote. It just seems like no one's as interested now. Now to switch gears a bit and land me on some very dangerous ground, I would like to point out that I am the owner of the list, and if administrative decisions need to be made, I will be the one making them. Now I certainly do appreciate any feedback or advice, but don't expect me to not say anything if someone tries to take charge and dictate their wishes or overstep their bounds. If there are any problems, I will address them. If anyone has any concerns, please feel free to express them, but rather than complain on the list (which is poor protocol), take them up with me personally. If you have an issue, let me know. That's part of my role as the administrator. This is a privately owned list, not public domain like a newsgroup. Freedom of speech only exists here because I want it to, not because it's a given. That said, I do want it to exist, which is why I've been fighting so adamantly throughout this thread. Everyone is told when they join that there are no rules about off-topic posting. If you don't like a subject, skip it or delete those posts. Just don't do anything that would keep people from feeling comfortable posting about whatever they want to. That I won't tolerate, especially since we all know the rules. CDnow's "also purchased" category's often highly suspect, and since it's a non-scientific sampling of purchasing patterns, it really doesn't do much of value. If CDnow was the only source of music in existence, their data'd be worth something, but since it's just one avenue (and not necessarily reflective of the market), there's just nothing there. Also, consider this: Frank Zappa could be charitably described as 'quirky' and 'off-beat'. (Anyone who'd name their kid Moon Unit...) OK. We've established him as thus--now substitute the words "Liz Phair" in place of "Frank Zappa". It fits--quirky and off-beat. There's perhaps cultural linkage here which I'm not qualified to discuss. Me, I'll openly admit to owning 'Surfacing' and most of the other US commercial releases from the Nettwerk/Arista catalog of Sarah McLachlan. Next, he said: "Usually when artists who are not attractive, white and female are brought up, it is limited to a general expression of pleasure or disdain...no great effort is made to compare/contrast their musical stylings with those of Liz." There's a reason for that--namely the fact that we're not a representative sample of society as a whole. We're all inclined to like the music produced by Liz Phair, and demographics start to kick in. I daresay that if push came to shove, most of us are from middle-to-upper class backgrounds, products of either suburbia or the townhouse sections of the major cities. No inner-city dwellers on the list, and most of us are reasonably similar in a lot of things. The constant among us is an interest in Liz Phair. It stands to reason that people on this list would seek out similar musicians, and since we are of the same starting point (relatively), we are going to go along the same routes. As for the disdain, our favorite artist(s) often are ignored by radio play, and thus do not enjoy the commercial success of say, the Backstreet Boys. Therefore, our favorites suffer at the hands of these people, and thus resentment (of some sort) is generated. With regards to Aguilera and Lopez, the impression (I'm guessing) among this list's membership is that these two (and others) have traded more on their bodies than their musical talent. IMO, the perception of this list also runs the _opposite_ direction for people like Liz Phair, Aimee Mann, etc. Also, consider this: Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, and their ilk are 'pop' culture. It is probably a fact that most of the people on this list in one way or the other sneer at popular culture to some degree. As for me, I certainly do--I've got my indie-snob position well staked-out and various exceptions to the precepts of indie-snobbism grandfathered out. For the most part, their lyrics are seen as vapid, meaningless, and really kind of shallow--just like Jennifer Lopez's 'good little girl from PR' image. WRT to the 'White Album' line, I dunno...I don't have a single Beatles album. Wouldn't own one if I had the option, either. To be totally flippant, I daresay the most common album among members of this list would be 'Exile in Guyville', for some reason. ^_^ In all honesty, Ken, I'd probably skew your statistics badly. I don't have hardly anything _but_ attractive white females in my album collection. Ancient Bruce Hornsby & Robert Palmer, a Tom Cochrane, and Portishead are the only anomalies (aside from soundtracks) in that setup. The incident you're asking about really shouldn't surprise you--it's similar to asking Southern Baptists who make $120,000/year what political preference they have and then expressing surprise when it comes up 'Republican' almost totally. We're just the wrong audience to be totally representative.
