What was that first one? Something about Liz revealing herself. I just wanted to say that her reluctance to put her whole self into the song says a lot about her. A lot of times you have to listen to what isn't said. But I think she really comes out and reveals herself in "Perfect World". There's something about the simplicity of it all. She doesn't want her life to change, she just wants to be the one considered "cool, tall, vulnerable, and luscious." And, "Nashville" I feel is revealing in the way she doesn't like revealing herself. To be slightly selfcentered, it reminds me of me. I'm scared to say too much because I'm scared what I say might be a lie. "I won't decorate my love" is quite an anthem. What was that second one? Something about Liz in first person. I can't really think of a first person song that isn't about herself. Or at least, I can't think of one that I really want to comment about. "Only Son" comes to mind, but I don't know what to say about that. When I first heard it, I thought to myself, "It would be neat if her brother wrote this as a poem and gave it to her, and then she was so touched she turned it into a song." I have no facts to back me up, I just thought that was neat. That third one was what Liz song would I have if only one was allowed. I'd have to go with "Nashville." I just couldn't live without it, at least not happily, or at least not as happily as I'd like to be. That fourth one was who do I hold in the same regards as Liz. I find myself to be of different musical tastes from a lot of the people on the list, so maybe this'll sound interesting to some people out there. First of all, the god to me is Bob Dylan. The man's just everything a singer/songwriter should be. Robert Johnson is someone I hold in some of the highest of respects. Partly because of the whole legend of his life, but mostly because, goddamn, no one has ever played guitar like that since. Woody Guthrie because I read "Bound for Glory" and that about knocked me on the floor and spun my life around. And, although he isn't up there yet, my boss just started playing Hank Williams for me, and he's pretty frickin' amazing. Yup, I think that's it right there. Thanks for your time. I don't like the idea of one company having so much power. I read too much sci-fi crap and it's a constant nagging in the back of my shriveled mind that some day multi national corporations are going to have more power than governments and the "globalism" that we see now is a precursor to blurring national borders. The solution to this is that I read romance novels instead, but it's a thought. It's just insane how things have progressed to one company owning EVERYTHING. If you lived in a certain area Time Warner could be your service for cable, phones, internet, quite a few of your magazine subscriptions, your baseball team, and the movies you go to see. They have a "learning program" thing that your kids will watch at school. You should see their collection of music labels! A list of major corporations and what they own: http://www.cjr.org/owners/ My real beef with this is how it affects everyday lives and interests. With Liz it means we can't write silly emails to her record company and ask if she's going to tour in (insert your city here). Matador people would reply back even if they didn't know. They could tell you that she dropped by and was going out for chinese food that night. Capitol doesn't even give you an automated response. They can't even manage to update her web info. I'd be quite happy if Liz sold her CDs right from her own website like a certain person we are not discussing on the list. By the way, could everyone stop bitching about that already? Another lovely thing about small record labels is that you learn about the other artists on the label as a result of being the fan of just one. I would probably had never heard of Cat Power or Bettie Serveert had Liz started out on Capitol. Most people out there (not the crazy fan list people like us) probably can't even tell you what label their favorite band is on. Other nonsense: Repeated lines - the only one that bothers me is at the end of Shane when she sings "you've gotta have fear in your heart." i tend to tune out and listen to whatever spanish tv show is going in the background. Phairy Tales - used to be a huge resource! I'm not sure who the owner of the site was but if anyone else out there has an ftp site, maybe you guys could arrange a temporary home for the files. Kiskos - how is the t-shirt thing coming along? the only liz song to ever hear again - 6'1 - has everything beware the yakuza, - ---melissa ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #19 ***********************************
