I think that these two songs illustrate that on WCSE Liz is becoming lyrically more straightforward in expressing her feelings about the relationship(s) she is in. I mean that there isn't a great deal of ambiguity in these songs, whereas the Exile stuff is much more open to interpretation. Well, on NPR last week, they were talking about how this techno artist put an offer up on his website (or a message board or something) saying that his next song would be all songs written about particular people and that he would write them about the first 30 that respond (and include $1000). They played some cuts of the album and it sounded great and I could only imagine how great it must sound to those he wrote about. So wouldn't it be great if Liz did this? Since you're the list administrator and all, why don't you try to set the precedent instead of doing exactly what you want everyone to stop doing? Which is, like, the totally annoying part anyway, Jase. Is that you make these long, verbose posts about not doing this or that, but really that's what you're doing. Sigh. There's just no solution. And I'm sticking to my guns about what I've said: sticking to one "off" topic is OLD and tired. And I wouldn't fucking blame anybody if they deliberately steered away from Liz because I annoyed them day after day with every detail I could think of about her. And furthermore I never talked about anything else BUT Liz. And @ least griping about the shitty state of the list is content different from that of the past month. Sigh. And the reason people-- well, at least this goes for me-- are so adamant about posting their discontent with the list is so that maybe that will clue people in to start trying to talk about other things. Yeah, it's only a mailing list, but it's a way to communicate with people far away and stuff, and like... learn about lots of stuff maybe. NOT JUST ONE THING. And also... instead of knocking on lurkers, the list should be a welcome place where like...everyone feels engaged in what they're reading and like, maybe is compelled to post by forces other than feelings of wrath towards everyone who just posts from their arse. (Me included?) But come on, if you all are SO interested in another topic, why not talk about it on THAT mailing list? And don't take me out of context. I'm not saying that it's bad to talk about other things on this list. I'm saying it's bad to only talk about one other thing, everyfuckingday, everyfuckingpost, for weeks and weeks. And yes, I am the authority on this. ;) And if Aimee does become big and gets "shoved down [my] throat" as Jase wishes, it'll probably only serve to make me gag. That's usually what happens when I shove things down my throat (why does this sound really sick sexual?) Well, at least SS gave me gagging practice. Since Liz has said that she tends to mix fantasy with reality during the writing process, the most personal lyrics seem to be more certain lines from different songs. For example: From 'Fuck and Run' - "I can feel it in my bones. I'm gonna spend my whole life alone." - You don't get much more personal than that. It seems like the "real" Liz is scattered throughout all of her songs and albums and it's up to the listener to try and find out who she really is. This seems to be a problem of demographics. If you wanted to know the CHANCE of Liz touring Australia, you would need to do some research. It's very simple: in your spare time, take a sample of your country's population and find out the percentage of the people who know who Liz Phair is. Then you need to poll those same people and find out if they would see her "live" if she was touring in-country. Now, after those dismal results, you might want to adjust your sampling technique and narrow it down to people ages 8-97 or maybe go to the airport and just poll the Americans arriving exclusively off of flights from Chicago, Illinois. Better yet, go to all of the record stores in your town and stand right near the "P" entries in the Pop/Rock section and do your polling there. If you are ever able to get a fair statistical sample (look in a textbook for the rules regarding this) and obtain a mean of .05 (a large std. deviation could possibly be forgiven here), call Capitol Records at once. I did however request that you didn't do moronic things like repeat the same damn line of text 80 times in one message like your little PJ Harvey spaz-out and send messages to the list that strictly addressed one other member and were in-jokes that would have been better suited to private e-mail. Also, what you were posting were mostly ramblings that had nothing to do with anything at all being discussed on the list and were not doing anything to start new discussions. They were nonsense e-mails that were almost indecipherable. And "constant harrassing" would constitute a hell of a lot more than the one or two messages I sent asking you to change your posting style to something more suitable. Also, I wasn't attacking the fact that your posts were off-topic so much as that they weren't always appropriate for the list. I think Exile in Guyville kicks Madonna in the tail all on her own. I think Liz brings everything out into the open and lays it all out there. Madonna does that with her body. (Just being defensive here really, I still can't believe I just read that comment.) But I'll give you my two (Lizless) albums anyway: 1. Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Songs. We all know the "hit"; but there is SO MUCH passion in this album. 2. Jeff Buckley - Grace. I must say that the digest has been. . . in a word, interesting lately. I have been a subscriber to this list for quite some time, although I am generally a "lurker." But, I've learned many new things about Liz, and gained some sweet Liz stuff with help from many list members (Craig, Katie, and Jase to name a few). I also agree with many others that the list is not what it once was. A lot of it is off-topic, and just plain odd. But times changes all, I guess. As for Aimee Mann, I for one would like to thank everyone, most of all Jase, for posting so much about her. I saw "Magnolia," anticipating her songs. I greatly enjoyed the movie, and will get the soundtrack as soon as the small record stores here have it. I LOVED that scene in the movie where everyone starts singing her song! Powerful! And her singing "One" was so beautiful too. I can definitely see the parallels from her music to Liz! On to Liz, whose music I love so, so much. . . Has anyone ever heard of the VHS version of "Saturday Morning- Cartoons' Greatest Hits?" I GOT IT! I found it on eBay, and freaked out because it is hosted by Drew Barrymore (MY FAVORITE). I am SOOOO excited! I'll post again after I watch this glorious video, which contains Liz's lovely video for "Tralala." To start a thread, which celebrities do you hold in high regard, like you hold Liz? I have already given myself away by saying that I love Drew Barrymore!! I also really like Helana Bonham Carter. As for men, I like William H. Macy, and Edward Norton, to name a few. Hoping to see some responses, ~Julie :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 22:59:11 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Another major label merger... Last year at this time, it was Universal Music and PolyGram that were merging. Now this year, apparently it's Time Warner and EMI. Why might this be of interest to us? Well, Liz is now signed to Capitol, one of EMI's labels. And although I haven't read any news yet about the labels dropping lesser-selling acts, it wouldn't surprise me if it were to happen. As a result of the Universal merger, somewhere between 100 to 200 bands and artists were dropped from their labels. Not all of the acts were ones who sold poorly either; some bands like Weezer and Elastica had albums that went gold or platinum previously, but were deemed to no longer have that same commercial potential. This could prove to be bad news for us if they do decide to start dropping artists with this new merger. Liz, in major label terms, is a marginally selling artist, which might put her at the forefront of the artists they may potentially cut loose. Then again, they might keep her around because she's a critics' darling and has been rather influential -- most labels keep a few such artists on their rosters. While they don't sell a lot of records, they generate good press and lend some prestige to the label. This in part is why artists like Joni Mitchell, who hasn't had a gold album since the late '70s, are still a part of the major label system and have no problems getting their records out, and it's also why Sonic Youth weren't dropped during the Universal merger while many acts that sell more records were. At the very least, I think Liz will be under more pressure to come up with a hit this time around. Also, they may decide to keep her for now, but if they're not happy with the record she turns in, they might drop her then. That's what happened to Aimee Mann, although she's recovered quite nicely. The only other problem is that Capitol would own the masters for the new album, and if they decline to release it or drop Liz, if she wants to take the record to another label, she'll have to buy them back, which could prove to be quite costly -- well into the six figure range. I'm sure Liz would have no problem finding a new label home elsewhere, possibly on one of the larger indies, but it could mean a long delay before the new album is released by the time all the legalities were sorted out. Of course, this might all be idle speculation and there won't be any massive cuts to label rosters like with the Universal deal. And it's also quite possible that if there were, Liz would survive the cut. Another thought, though: Is anyone else as concerned about all of these mergers? We will have went from six major music corporations down to four, who would virtually have total control over the market. This kind of overconsolidation unsettles me somewhat.... Hey, I like them, too. They are going to be in Dallas, TX on Feb. 29 at Deep Ellum Live. Tickets are $20. The ad says "Not for the faint of heart". I've never seen them in concert. I hope I can go even though it's 3 hours away. Speaking of people I've never seen in concert...About Liz's next album...When did she expect it to be out? Approximately, of course. Just wondering. Thanks. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Ahem. Lords of Acid? First of all, the very name suggests this band is most likely not worth a second of my time. Second of all, as I have been unlucky enough to be exposed to this swill, I can say with confidence that this subscriber wants to hear nothing about this raunchy band. If I did , I would subscribe to the Untalented Vulgar Morons group. The "lords" are not fit to lick the bottom of Liz's shoes, and are most certainly not worthy of sharing her fan group.
