We don't need no steenkin' topic! Hmm. OK. A couple of things to remember with regards to Aimee Mann: 1. We have it on good authority that one Elizabeth Clark Phair is an admirer of Ms. Aimee Mann. 'nuff said; it's topical. 2. The fellow who owns this list is on the record as saying that we'll tolerate Mann content, as well as a bunch of other things. 3. You would prefer we discuss the subtle nuances of "I want to be your blowjob queen"? Incidentally, look at it this way: Of course Aimee Mann content isn't relevant to the question of Liz Phair. To quote a miserable movie from the middle '90s, "So fuckin' what?" If you don't like it, please feel free to create Phair content for everyone else to kick around--it'd be welcome. Besides, hell, it's not like our common subject of interest is all that focused herself. Call me crazy, but I'd daresay she's more "clumsy and random", like the blaster that Obi-Wan Kenobi sneered at in 1977. To steal another line from that cinematic masterpiece, "It could be worse". fumbling-towards-ecstasy, a Sarah McLachlan list with which some of you are familiar, is a helluva lot worse than this for content which has absolutely no fucking relevance to the music or life of a certain Nova Scotian. Right now, I'm having to suffer through long-winded threads on just how peachy keen it is to be a vegetarian (Fuck them! More meat for the meat eaters!--Denis Leary) and one kid in Texas' piteous whining 'cause some Internet polling booth doesn't reflect his opinion about the absolute need to integrate and fully welcome the homosexual into the armed forces of the United States. Does this have anything to do with the woman who helmed Lilith Fair into an ass-whipping of Lollapalooza? No, but nobody bitches about it, either. Scroll past and/or delete the message in question. The 'signal-to-noise' ratio of FTE is terrible, but you know something? Nobody ditches it. It's a nice large community where chances are someone's got the same opinion as you, and there's at least one or two people who agree with me on many things there, so obviously it can't be all that bad. Muahaha. Anyways, boys & girls, put it this way: If our dear Phair manages to keep schedule and sign us up for An Evening With, we'll have plenty of valuable discussion here in the next little bit. We're supposed to be (at least if I interpreted Jase's message correctly) a varied group of people held together by at least one common interest--namely an interest in a 5'2" girl from Connecticut with a mouth o' black and a heart of gold, the former blowjob queen who traded that crown to be the Spaceegg Empress. (OK, enough import RPGs on the PSX for me) You see, through our widespread nature (I refuse to say 'diversity'; it's an overused and annoying concept), there's room enough on this list for Steve Kisko and I. Steve Kisko is a heretic--he considers the small bit of work that ECP did with Jim Ellison & Material Issue to be absolutely awful. On the other hand, I hold to the One True Belief that "Liz Phair and Material Issue" could have been one helluva band for the middle 1990s. (Take that, Kurt and Courtney--maybe you'll _both_ shoot yourselves and leave Melissa Auf der Mar for LP&MI) Anyways, enough long-winded stream-of-consciousness ranting from me. Michael Resident List Paranoiac NP: Oh, fuck it--let's play some of that Aimee Mann girl. It might just irritate Remember: Steve Kisko is a heretic, and "Wow, phairbear's a _fox_!" DISCLAIMER: All these opinions are my own. Therefore: The URL for the Jeffery photographs is www.popfolio.com From there, scroll down the right-hand menu and find "Liz Phair" Somehow, my fave's the one where she's got her head leaned back and eyes shut. Having never seen her live, I'd wager a guess that's during either 'Headache' or 'What Makes You Happy'. I dunno why, but I just think that it would be an appropriate choreograph for either of those songs. Or maybe 'Fantasize'. I don't know. Happy hunting, comrade! Michael Worrell NP: "Momentum", AIMEE MANN <---There's some off-topic content for you! Muahahaha. (and as requested in #WCSE, here's a shout-out to Nora, who dropped in late last night. Subject: why staying on the off topic sux The problem with all this fucking aimee mann posting isn't the fact that it's off topic. Sorry, but it would get pretty boring and closed minded anyway to talk only about Liz. The problem with the current trend in SS digests is that it's ALL FUCKING AIMEE! It's PLAYED OUT! Furthermore, I don't konw about other people, and I just might be the only one, but this barrage of Aimee talk has only served to make me NOT want to check her out, just cuz I"m so tired of hearing aobut her. It's like... just to be rebellious I'm not going to check her out. So it's served to deny her of one fan, perhaps. I know it's an immature way of handling things, but fuck it! It's my way! So The bottom line is... change the f'n topic! Want a new one? Here it is: Is there a god? How do you know (that there is or isn't)? Yes, and it takes me a long time to delete all the messages about Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette, Eyes Wide Open, The Blair Witch Project, and any number of other subjects that have been discussed at length here on the list. But did you see me bitching about it? No, I figured people should be allowed to discuss whatever they wanted to discuss, whether I liked it or not. It would be nice if everyone would extend that same courtesy. And Nicole, I'm sorry if some of us keep posting about the same damn off-topic subject over and over and over. Maybe the majority of the other off-topic subjects don't interest us, but this one does, and it is the one we want to write about and respond to. Sure, I could write about any number of other things, but why would I waste my time writing about something I don't give a damn about in the hopes that someone else might? And also, another thing I've noticed is that most of the people complaining are lurkers. Not that I have a problem with people lurking, but come on, the lurkers never contribute to the list -- never start a thread, never reply to one -- and yet they want to dictate the content of what gets posted to the list? I mean, I liken this to people who never vote yet feel they have the write to bitch about who's in office. And you know what -- you may find posts about Aimee Mann annoying, but I find posts bitching about the Aimee content even more annoying. And you're only serving to let this drag on even further -- once there's less Aimee stuff to talk about, the discussion would have died down to casual mentions here and there. But this debate could drag on forever, at this rate. Electric guitar-dominated rockers like "Long Shot" and "It's Not Safe" sound *exactly* the same as melancholy acoustic pieces like "Save Me" or the Beatles-esque tracks on _Whatever_. As for the other bands mentioned, I'm a casual fan of the Modern Lovers (like the first record the best, especially "Roadrunner"). I've been meaning to pick up Television's _Marquee Moon_ for quite some time now, but never seem to get around to it. Jase ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 15:48:26 EST From: RocketBoyD@aol.com Subject: just a thought I know this is not ever going to happen, but I'd love to see Liz collaborate with Jon Brion (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple). I think he could add some awesome retro production to some of her songs (think of Aimee's "Superball", Fiona's "Paper Bag"). I think he creates a very intimate atmosphere on his records. I think Liz is everything in music and achieved all of her intentions. Liz is a goddess, but I don't ever get too emotional when I hear her songs. I think she is somewhat scared to let her emotions out on a record. This is not to say she isn't heartbreakingly honest in her lyrics, cause she is. With the exception of "Perfect World", "Go On Ahead", and "Strange Loop", and "Stuck On An Island", I don't hear too much coming out of her gut emotions...... Does anyone know what I'm talking about????? It's kinda like a quote Courtney Love said about Ms. Phair, "Liz, can you just have a bad day for once?" But I think Liz has realized that and is writing some dark stuff, just like she said in that earlier interview. I'd love to know of her past heartbreaks and family troubles. She's very ellusive about those subjects, especially on "Only Son". I have a feeling Liz's new album will be a lot more in the spotlight than her past records. The combination of Lillith/CK/and her new record deal will give a little more of a publicity push. I don't know if it was Matador's fault that WSCE wasn't properly promoted or released, but I hope she gets a fair chance. Not so much for sales, but for magazine covers and critical acknowledgement. There would be nothing so exciting but to see her end up on a Rolling Stone cover a second time. And I really hope she tours, cause I haven't seen her yet.............and I'm starting to give up hope. just a thought................
