I'm 18 years old, from Melbourne, Australia. I've been on the list for a couple of months now, just observing, but now I thought I might contribute. I'm a big fan of Liz's, but I've really got nothing exciting to show for it, as I can hardly find Whip-Smart for anything under $30, let alone anything rarer. Filter: I am a big fan of Filter since their first album came out. Their new album, "Title of Record," in my opinion, is much better than their first, "Short Bus." The song Take a Picture is really the only "sell-out" song on the album. The remainder of the record is brilliant and the songs are really good. If you can, listen to songs such as Cancer, Captain Bligh, It's Gonna Kill Me, Skinny and The Best Things and you'll see what I mean. Australian releases; Someone, I think it was Sally Mae, found the Supernova single in Australia. I can't even find EIG anywhere. No store I've seen holds it, and Whip-Smart is pretty hard to find anywhere either. I'm think I'm going to have to order online. I really want Guyville, in particular, especially from Stratford-on-guy, which is a great song, but it's nowhere to be found. *sigh* Anyway, thanks for putting up with my ramblings; Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2000 02:52:44 -0600 From: David Olschki Subject: De-lurking, and Girlysound discs available Okay, none of you know me, but I feel like I know a LOT of you. Guess that's what happens when you spend seven months lurking. Anyway, I've really enjoyed reading the various opinions expressed on this list. It's probably about time I contribute, though, so I'll add my views on the myriad threads that have been discussed since I subscribed: FIRST LIZ ALBUM: WCSE (I was pulled in by Polyester bride), followed two weeks later by EIG and WS. FAVORITE LIZ ALBUM: EIG. I have no reason to relate to this album, but it just tears me to pieces. FAVORITE LIZ SONG: It varies, but it usually comes down to Strange Loop, Divorce Song, May Queen, Sometimes a Dream (is What Makes You a Slave), or Polyester Bride (I often think I'm the male equivalent to the narrator in this song). SEEN LIZ IN CONCERT?: Yes, at the University of Minnesota on April 13th, 1999. FAVORITE LIZ WEBSITE: Ken Lee's Mesmerizing (anybody that doesn't have a copy of the WCSE Sessions, e-mail him about getting a copy!) SONGS LIZ SHOULD COVER: Then She Did, by Jane's Addiction; I Believe, by R.E.M. FAVORITE NON-LIZ ARTISTS: R.E.M., Toad the Wet Sprocket, Ben Folds Five, The Afghan Whigs. BEST ALBUM OF THE '90s: Either Pearl Jam's "Ten" or R.E.M.'s "Automatic for the People"; I think it has almost as much to do with when they came out as what they contain. I was a senior in high school when "Ten" was released, and a freshman in college when "Automatic" came out; things just seemed more influential back then. Both seemed so different from what else was available at the time, and I can scarcely describe what they mean to me. So there you have it-- seven months of thought in one concise list. Moving on to the main reason I'm posting: Shortly after I started listening to Liz, I became aware of the existence of the Girlysound recordings. I found it frustrating that there was a large body of Liz material that was seemingly out of my reach. At that moment, however, someone I didn't know was nice enough to give me a copy of said recordings out of nothing but their own sense of generosity, and I have been forever in that person's debt. Recently, I have come into possession of another copy of the Girlysound discs, and I would like to return the favor that was once given to me. What I'm looking for is a Liz fan on the list who doesn't own a copy of Girlysound, who hasn't even heard it, but would appreciate it; I'll mail my extra copy to this individual at no cost, not even postage. To give everyone a chance (including those who receive the digest version), I'll give the discs to the first person who e-mails me (olschki@cems.umn.edu) after 12 noon on Monday. They've moved past that, and the music is actually a lot more interesting over all now. Of course its a little more polished, which takes a bit away from their charm. Still Terror Twilight was, in my mind, easily the best album they've made since '95. They may be the most confusingly cool band I know, (Premiere called them the "most important rock band left" for what its worth) but they still manage to stay completely original on ust about every track. Of course they suck live and never play the songs you want to hear, no pun intended ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2000 18:32:13 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "Andrea Steiner" Subject: Re: support-system-digest V3 #4 Hi, I've been bad lately and haven't been keeping up with the digest. They got just as commercial as Filter, and i actually have more respect for Filter and thier new song((i've only heard the single so that doesn't give me a lot of room to talk i know))than i do for what Mr. Reznor is doing with his time. Maybe i expected more since he took so friggin long to get to it. Something more along the lines of The Downward Spiral..but hey..what can you say..he's been taking his medication. I hope Jonathan Davis never decides to invest in serious therapy. Okay, sorry if i just like repeated what 800 other people have said. God only knows how long this conversation could have been going on..i should be stricken with stigmatas for my lack o' list reading. I >saw the addy was up for sale a few days ago. Hmm... The address had been owned by Warner Bros., who maintained the site, but now that Jen's no longer on the label, I guess they decided not to pay to renew the domain name. The site is still up, though, at the last time I checked. As for Jen herself, a list member who does not want his name mentioned here ever again (right, Steve Kisko? Whoops... ) exchanged e-mails with her recently, and found out that she's feeling inspired again and hopes to maybe release a new album this year. She's still feeling burned by her major label experience it seems, because she doesn't seem to be considering that as an option this time around. Hopefully she'll be able to release some new material on her own this time (_Cockamamie_ was originally self-released before Warners picked it up), or find a smaller label that does more to support its artists. jake wrote: >okay, from your descriptions, I think you both have the barbie/ken doll >cd and don't realize it. it may look like a fuzzy cloud, but that's the >cool part, right? because it is supposed to be a barbie-ken-barbie >threesome "celebrating" liz. someone correct me if I'm wrong here, >but that sounds like the cd I have, and I bought mine in late 1994. This is indeed correct; I guess some people just don't have dirty enough minds to see what those clouds really are. ;) Hopefully the re-released version will restore the original CD face. Speaking of, although it was due to be released this past Tuesday, according to amazon.com, it's now been pushed back to January 25. I really hope this isn't any indication of how Capitol will treat Liz in the future.... I'm not too sure I'm keen on the idea of them controlling her entire catalogue, especially since they've decided to no longer carry _Juvenilia_. Liz B wrote: >i remember hearing the other day that juvinilia was out of print/no longer >sold. anyways, i was looking at the columbia house (you know, 12 for the >price of 1 deal) site and saw they were still offering it. This is likely just remaining stock that Columbia House still has, and I'd definitely make a point of ordering it right away. Once they're gone, they'll be gone for good, since Capitol is no longer producing copies. Jennifer wrote: >Does anybody know who that guy is in "Oh My God"? Just wondering... It's actually just Liz, with her voice slowed down, as another list member (Nicole, I believe) discovered when she recorded a .wav of the song and played it back at a slower speed. Isn't technology wonderful? Peter wrote: >I also picked up the Spit >on a Stranger EP, only because it happened to be on the listening >station at Tower and the second song is very very good. I also really like the third song, "Roll With The Wind," which easily ranks among my favorite Pavement tunes. The one thing I've found with Pavement over the course of the last two records is that I've enjoyed the b-sides as much, and in many cases more than the songs that did make the albums. That said, I do like _Terror Twilight_, but I find myself listening to _Slanted and Enchanted_ and _Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain_ far more often. _Terror Twilight_ just isn't as compulsively listenable, but part of it may also be that I don't really have any memories attached to the album, which is quite often the case when I prefer a band's older work over their newest release. Jennifer wrote: >Anyway, my point is that another GREAT band, Buffalo Tom covers a >song called "Hawaiian Baby" on their "Wiser" single. I don't know what Spinanes album that song >is on or anything, but I definitely recommend that "Wiser" single, not >to mention anything else by Buffalo Tom. The Spinanes version appeared on one of their early singles, which I believe are going to be compiled and released as an EP later this year. It is indeed a pretty swell song, although I haven't heard the Buffalo Tom version yet. It is going on my list of music to check out, though. For the Mann fans keeping score at home, the _Magnolia_ soundtrack finally debuted on the Billboard chart this past week at #147. Hopefully now that the film is in wide release, the album will move up the upper half of the chart this week.
