I can't remember them exactly but one of them was something along the lines of "There is more concern about me being sexy than a musician" and it also had Shirley Manson saying that there was pressure on female lead singers to not wear much and to look like what men thought was the ideal woman...Sally "Look at me! I'm not hot, sexy or submissive!" Shelly, one of the best songs to come out of the 80's (in my book) is Book of Love's "Tubular Bells/Pretty Boys Remix" off the Just Say Yo compilation album. I had some of there other stuff which was good but that one really hit home for me. Plus Pretty in Pink was huge for me because it was the first time that I heard New Order. Since I've already jumped into this decade, does anybody remember the band Sigue Sigue Sputnik? They were the best band that nobody heard of although some of the band members were from more famous bands. Gabe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Of course, my opinion may be a little skewed by the fact that I am a late-comer to Pavement, and in fact this album was my introduction to the band. They've quickly caught on with me. Too bad they broke up (or so I heard.) I also picked up the Spit on a Stranger EP, only because it happened to be on the listening station at Tower and the second song is very very good. (By the way, if anyone has any hints at an interpretation of Spit on a Stranger let me know.) You may have noticed that I changed the spelling in your subject line. I can't stand it when people who like Liz Phair decide they need to eradicate the letter F from the roman alphabet. The folk/pop singer's music is vitally integral to the movie, which graced almost every critical Top 10 list and is favored for an Oscar nomination, and nine of her songs appear on the Warner Bros. soundtrack album. "My feeling is one of gratification that I could contribute to such a great movie," says Mann, who kicks off a co-headlining tour with her husband, fellow folk-popster Michael Penn, in San Francisco on Jan. 25. Mann's music not only appears in the film, it propels the plot. In the screenplay by director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights), the cocaine addict played by Melora Walters asks John C. Reilly's insecure cop, "Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing me again?" That's a line from Mann's song "Deathly." At another point in the film, all the actors -- including Tom Cruise -- break character to sing along with Mann's "Wise Up." No one artist's music has been so entwined in the fabric of a major motion picture since Simon & Garfunkel propelled "The Graduate." "I guess directors aren't really interested in doing that," says Mann. "I think it's a great idea to have music and movies be more integrated. I like the idea of having one artist -- or a couple of artists -- provide a narrative to a movie. I hope other directors do that." Mann came to fame with Boston New Wave band 'Til Tuesday, whose "Voices Carry" reached No. 8 on the singles chart in 1985. After two follow-up misfires came a '90s solo career marked by critical praise but ill timing. Mann was a cult-size hero whose two solo albums weren't promoted properly; neither was released by the label it was recorded for. "It's just the nature of record companies," she says. "I'm sure that, when their 15 minutes is up, even the big moneymakers will find that the treatment they get from the record companies is not too good, either." Unfortunately, her third album has met the same fate as her first two. Bachelor No. 2 was supposed to be released by Geffen until Interscope devoured the label in 1998. Mann was then told it was subpar. (Five of its "subpar" songs grace the Magnolia soundtrack.) "[Interscope's] response to me was that I should go write a bunch more songs and basically make another record," Mann says. "They didn't really specify what kind of record, but I was tired. I had made a record and it was done." Mann -- who is managed by her former boyfriend and 'Til Tuesday partner, Michael Hausman -- is releasing Bachelor No. 2 through her own Web site in March (www.aimeemann.com) and she recently hired a publicist. Yet instead of having to generate interest in her client, the recently sprung Mercury Records flack has had to hold back a floodgate of interview requests in the wake of the success of Magnolia. "Having music in a popular film does the job that the record company doesn't always do," Mann says. "People send fan mail to my Web site saying that they saw Magnolia, thought the music was great, found out who I was and bought the record." - -- Corey Levitan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2000 23:33:36 -0500 (Eastern Standard Time) From: "Roper, Catherine E" Subject: birthdays yesturday, spaceeggy katie wrote: >Speaking of b-days...anyone up for the idea of putting >together a b-day book for Liz's b-day this year?
