The first pressings of the album featured the infamous Ken-and-Barbie-dolls-celebrating-the-release-of-Liz's-album-with-a-fire-brus hed-effect CD face, while more recent ones (I think mid-'97 and forward, when the album was part of Matador's mid-price series) feature the two dancing figures from the back of the CD booklet. If you search around enough used CD stores, you may be able to come across a copy of the one of the original pressings. Joe wrote: >Out from lurking to pose one question. Is it a first pressing/misprint? Just curious. The first pressing had "Juvenalia" on the spine and was a misprint. It was later corrected for all future pressings. I have no idea if a misprinted copy has any additional worth, although given the fact that the EP is now out-of-print, I expect the value will go up on either pressing of it. Christine wrote: >ok maybe im just a dork, but i have no idea what _Juvenilia_ is. i mean i >know its one of Liz's CD's but was it the first? or where does it fit in? >what songs are on it? _Juvenilia_ is an EP that Liz released in August 1995, and was more or less intended as a single for "Jealousy." It also featured two new recordings and the first official release of any of the material from Liz's Girly Sound demo tapes. Of the two new songs, "Turning Japanese," a cover of the Vapors song that Liz recorded with the members of Material Issue, is alright, if non-essential. The same cannot be said of "Animal Girl," which is stellar -- consider it the last in the great trilogy of Liz piano songs that started with "Canary" and "Chopsticks." And I do say last because it seems like Liz has stopped writing piano-based songs entirely. The five Girly Sound songs are also worth hunting this EP down for. The sound quality is much, much better than on any of the bootlegs that are circulating, and while these are not -- with the exception of "Easy" -- necessarily the true stand-outs of the Girly Sound material, they are still quite good and every Liz fan should have these. Now that the EP is out-of-print, your best bet might be to see if any stores have any remaining unsold stock or to check the used bins. Both are great, but _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_ is, hands-down, her best. It reminds me in some ways of _Exile_, in terms of the strength of Jen's songwriting, as well as thematically and in its emotional range. The arrangements are also very creative, although the production is nowhere near as lo-fi as _Exile_'s. I highly recommend it; it's one of my favorite albums of all-time. Bill asked: >any rumors on release for the next >album? i am so out of the liz phair loop it's not even funny. Liz is working on the new album right now and it's currently scheduled for release this spring, according to a recent issue of Alternative Press. The working title for the record is _An Evening With..._, and some of the songs that may be included are "Bouncers' Conversation," "Love/Hate Transmission," "Don't Apologize," "Firewalker," "Stranger" (a re-write of the Girly Sound song "Hello, Sailor"), and "My Mistake" (of which Liz posted some of the lyrics to this list). Liz also told a couple of members from this list who met her at the benefit show in New York last year that she planned on recording a new version of "Can't Get Out Of What I'm Into," another Girly Sound track. Aimee has been selling the _Bachelor No. 2_ preview discs at her shows since the acoustic tour last summer, as well as through her official web site. The discs were pressed to help her raise money to buy the masters for the full-length album back from Interscope, after they declined to release it. The preview disc is indeed terrific, especially "Red Vines," which, to me, sounds like Aimee's best chance for a hit single since "That's Just What You Are." All of the other songs are great as well, and lead me to believe that the full-length album (set to be released in late January or early February, the last time I checked her web site) will be her best yet. Michael Penn has a new album coming out soon as well that I'm really looking forward to. It's due out on February 1 and will be titled _MP4 (Days Since A Lost Time Accident). He's also going to be producing the new Wallflowers record, although I have no idea if the sessions for it have even started yet. Johnson" Subject: Kim Fox Anyone familiar with Kim Fox, particularly her Moon Hut CD? I found the following description online somewhere: "After taking a detour through college to study classical voice and opera, Kim arrived on the New York singer/songwriter scene with a fury in 1994. He self-styled piano playing (and recently some songs on guitar) point the way for a new form of India pop which blends the classical melodies of Tori Amos with the stripped down edge of Liz Phair -- at the same time, her refreshingly frank confessional lyrics evoke memories of Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell. Kim's live show serves as an emotional catharsis where she purges her upper east side Manhattan upbringing and unorthodox romantic history. The experience is often shocking for first time audience members who are not expecting someone to speak so directly to them." I haven't seen the CD in local stores, so I'm wondering if any Liz fans have recommendations before I bother ordering this CD online. Yowza! Yo, check it, So wouldn't it be dreamy if this Capitol rerelease of Exile had the flame-enhanced Barbie doll orgy from the first pressings? I was so disappointed when I bought a new copy of Exile to replace the one I had signed at Just Passin' Thru (complete transcript of Meredith's conversation with Liz: "Hey, did you know these are Barbie dolls?" "Uh, uh, yeah, oh my God, I think someone told me that. Oh my God, thank you so much, huh huh huh," Meredith scuttles away, clutching her CD to dorky, socially retarded little chest), and I realized the CD design had changed. It would make me really happy if they brought back the Barbies, but I suppose it's unlikely. I don't know, I'm just talking. To anyone who's e-mailedme over the past two weeks or so, especially if you e-mailed me from Exile in Netville: I *will* reply! Soon! To anyone who's been waiting anxiously (yeah, right) for the triumphant release of the All-New Y2K-A-Riffic Netville: I *will* get it done! Soon! Both of these promises will probably be fulfilled after I get back to school next Sunday; it's just too hard to do stuff when I'm not on my very own beloved blueberry-colored Apple G3 (also known as, "No, I don't have an iMac" and "Really, it's not an iMac"). The "history advance" is a promo disc containing selections from _Exile In Guyville_ and _Whip-Smart_. The promo was sent out to mainly retailers in the spring of '98 to promote the upcoming release of _whitechocolatespaceegg_ by highlighting Liz's back catalogue. The songs on the disc are as follows: 1. Fuck And Run 2. Divorce Song 3. Stratford-On-Guy 4. Glory 5. Never Said 6. Jealousy 7. Alice Springs 8. Supernova 9. Support System 10. Go West Not a bad compilation, although the inclusion of "Fuck And Run" may not have been the best idea if they were hoping for in-store play. That's more or less how I got my copy -- a friend of mine who owns a small record store gave me the disc he received because "there is no way we can play this here." Meredith wrote: >ObLiz: Hmmmm. I just >hope it blows me away in the same way that WSCE did. I think the thing to remember is that Liz has never seemed interested in making the same album twice, so the new record is bound to be different from WCSE and all of Liz's other past work. There will likely still be traces of that '60s influence as it is part of her musical growth and history now, but she'll also likely want to move forward and explore new things as well. As for the new record being less ambitious, I don't think we have anything to worry about. Liz said in one interview, "I want the next record to be a work of art. A real thing that people will hold up as a benchmark." If that isn't ambition, I don't know what is. I think the new record will see Liz taking more control over its sound. In her touring band, Liz has a group of musicians that she seems really comfortable playing with and can easily communicate what it is she's going for to. Also, Liz has said in at least one interview that the songs she liked best on _whitechocolatespaceegg_ were those that she could hear herself on, because the songs with bigger production were worked over a great deal in the studio and weren't quite what she envisioned them sounding like in her bedroom. My guess is that this time she will take greater control over the production, which she has already started to do by recording the basic tracks on her own with the band before bringing anyone else in. There's a really good interview at where Liz talks about her past recordings and gives a few hints of what to expect on the new one. It's definitely worth checking out, if you haven't already. For some reason I kept thinking during the film that Liz would have been good for either of the two main female roles. Very strange.
