(I can't get into "Wonderland Park" as much -- Michael, could you give me a few "must-hear" song recommendations from that?) Their eponymous debut album is also really good, but it's out of print, so good luck. :-) [Oh yeah, and I was the one who posted the MP3's of their version of "Torn" -- how cool that you remembered!] I definitely like all of the AnnetennA stuff I've heard from their web site and am looking forward to their CD -- is there an expected release date? In terms of other stuff to check out, *definitely* give a listen to October Project. I can't even describe the music (and any way I could try would make it sound horrid), but it has some very haunting, yet emotional, lyrics and melodies. The singer (Mary Fahl) has a gorgeous voice -- deep and powerful, but also mysterious. HIGHLY recommended. I think their first album ("October Project") is a good one to start with, but their second ("Falling Farther In") is amazing as well. And, for those of you who know October Project (or who are looking for NEW-new music, as in music that's just coming out), check out November Project, the new band of the songwriter and lyricist from October Project (Emil Adler and Julie Flanders) -- November Project features a new vocalist (Mary Anne Marino), whose voice is more "mainstream" than Mary Fahl's, but is equally powerful. The music is similar but is more "pop-rock" / "mainstream" and therefore more accessible, I think. They have a GREAT web site (I can say that only because I'm the web-mistress!) at http://www.novemberproject.com, with sound clips (also at mp3.com) -- and if anyone wants to know more, feel free to write me and ask! Okay, so those are my suggestions.... I went to the CD store the other day, and instead of something DIFFERENT, I ended up with another Throwing Muses CD (which was great, but not the new avenue I was hoping for). So, give me some ideas guys and gals. Please, I am desperate for help. Jeff >> My suggestions: Hefner - The Fidelity Wars Sweet lo-fi english pop songs from english band. Brilliant lyrics and super hummability. Death In Vegas - The Contino Sessions Dark brooding electronica featuring appearances by Iggy Pop, Bobby Gillespie and the recently discussed on the list Dot Allison. Belle & Sebastian - Anything Whimsical Nick Drake influenced songs with great lyrics. Sleater Kinney - Anything Intense and exhilarating, also very popular with many a list member. Either that, or They Might Be Giants "Flood". *shrug* Those always seem to do it for me...and if not, I tend to rely more on early Emmylou Harris or country staples like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams or this crazy "Louisianna Dance Hall Music" CD I've got, which is a cajun/zydeco funfest.. I shit you not, I have spent the last two weeks with my old One Dove CD out, playing "Fallen" over and over again in the car. I can't remember what made me dig it out of my old CD's. It's got to be one of the greatest alt-dance-trance songs ever. It also set off pulling out the old New Order CD's and taking in a weeks worth of "Republic" (ah the glorious summer of '93.......New Order, Breeders, Counting Crows-when they were briefly cool, and that stupid "I'm gonna get you baby, I'm gonna get you yes I am!" song........ah sweet memories) From: Momus Subject: dot >I read a short article about Dot Allison in the Dec. >issue of the Mojo mag last nite. Please, I am desperate >> for help. >> *I highly suggest anything by the MURMERS. If you like Veruca Salt - Juliana Hatfield, Liz Phair - you will LOVE the Murmers...beautiful, slighly poppy, with intelligent lyrics - then hard rocking - gorgeous vocals...absolutely beautiful. Yer best bet with the Murmers is "BLENDER" or "PRISTINE SMUT". ***also - CREATURES - former members Budgie and Siouxsi from Siouxsie and THe Banshees - and it is incredible. "BOOMERANG" has some CRAZY ass vocals - kick ass drums - and really cool jazzy elements.. Their newest album "Anima Animus" is more of a techno/semi-gothy (wrong) innovative album which is worth it just for the song EXTERMINATING ANGEL alone. Also - the opening track SECOND FLOOR is amazing...great opener..heavier, dance-ish, creepy, eerie..a great mood setting album. ****Also - if you don't already have it - get the TOADIES "RUbberneck" for crying out loud!! They are one of the purest, simple, lyrically genius bands I can think of for the 90's, and I am still waiting for their MUCH MUCH MUCH delayed follow up album to 1994's "Rubberneck". But support this band because they are soo worth it..and they are still around, and they put sooo much into their songs..which is why i am being this patient in sticking around for the second album! *****Last one - if you can find it anywhere - unforutnately it is now very hard to find - pick up one of the 90's most RECENT best bands: EVE's PLUM. The band split up in 1997 and the lead singer has since become the much talked about (at least on here "VITAMIN C" - which is HORRIBLE and nothing a bit like the band.) but her band Eve'S PLum was a perfect cross between Blondie and HOLE. Really pretty, sparkly songs, heavy grungy guitars and a voice to absolutely DIE for...and, NOT going by Vitamin C's lyrics - EVE's PLUM had very thought provoking, genius lyrics. their debut album "ENVY" is louder, grittier, and harsher and the follow up "CHerry ALive" is more of a poppy, but still rockin album.. To preview Eve's Plum, a good example of them can be found on the HIGHER LEARNING soundtrack in which Liz Phair herself has a song ("Don't Have Time") - and we all know the CD is worth picking up just for that song alone...but the Eve's PLum song "EYE" is by far the 2nd best track on the CD. so at any rate, those are my suggestions...laters, Dan. Here's a review of it I did way back in October that was never printed. Something about it being "too negative." Dot Allison Afterglow Arista Records FFO: ethereal Sinead Lohan, One Dove Dot Allison fronted the British dub band One Dove. With that project extinct, Allison tries for a solo career. Too bad words like transcendental, languid, winsome, and breathless litter the press releases for Afterglow. There's certainly an audience for this music. Julee Cruise did well enough with the "Twin Peaks" television series soundtrack earlier this decade, and Allison's release makes for a good sequel of sorts. It boasts a number co-written by 60's pop songwriter Hal David, but it sure doesn't have any of his trademarked hooks. It's not all ethereal, either. "Colours," the lead track, and "Mo' Pop" are both (relatively) upbeat numbers that don't get bogged down by studio tricks and electronica cliches. But the CD really suffers from songs like "Message Personnel," with it's annoying, droning monotone vocals. And do we really need two versions of "Arab Strap Remix?" Nah. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo!
