Sorry, I was away for over a week on holidays, which explains the flood of bounced messages that I forwarded to the list yesterday. Sorry everyone for the delay on those -- I thought I'd be able to access my e-mail accounts while I was away, but I wasn't able to. And, Michael, you could send an anti-Aimee troll out, but wherever would you find one? I assume most of the lazy bastards at Interscope are all still on holidays. :P Speaking of Aimee, she's scheduled to appear on the Tonight Show tonight (Wednesday) and then on Craig Kilborn's show on Friday. There's also a special on VH1, entitled "Hollywood & Vinyl: Magnolia" that will be on a few times this weekend: Friday at 9:30 am and 3:30 pm, and Saturday at 9am. And in other Aimee news (forgive me, I've been away for a while and have much to share), there is an interview with her and Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of Magnolia, in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly, along with reviews of both the film and soundtrack. Magnolia opened early in Toronto, on Christmas Day, and I was able to see it last week. It is an unbelievably great film, totally brilliant and fucked-up at the same time, with a lot of unexpected twists and turns. Some of the things Anderson does in the film are so audacious, it's hard to believe he was actually able to pull them off. Melora Walters and Julianne Moore both turn in excellent performances, and Tom Cruise plays completely against type and manages to make it work (well, most of the time -- there were more than a few giggles in the theatre when he first delivered his "Respect the cock" motto). It's hard to really say much about the movie without giving too much away, particularly the out-of-nowhere and sure-to-be-debated ending, and I really don't want another Blair Witch-esque incident. ;) Anderson makes great use of Aimee's songs throughout the film. During one of the prologue sequences, you can hear a tiny bit of the hidden track from _I'm With Stupid_, with the "But you're the idiot who keeps believing in luck" vocals removed. This is soon followed by a loop of the first few seconds of "You Could Make a Killing," the bell sounds before Aimee's acoustic guitar comes in. An extended version of "One" opens the actual story itself, and is much longer than the version that appears on the soundtrack. "Build That Wall" and "Driving Sideways" appear in another scene, segued together. You get to hear about thirty seconds of each. Almost all of "Momentum" appears, and "Wise Up" (the sequence that this is used in is one of Anderson's bolder moves) and "Save Me" are used in their entirety. For that matter, so is the instrumental of "Nothing Is Good Enough," but only during the credits at the end of the film. And while "You Do" is listed in the credits, I don't recall actually hearing it, so probably only a tiny bit of it was used. "Deathly" doesn't appear at all, although it was what inspired the character of Claudia. Instead, the "Now that I've met you..." opening is part of her dialogue. Aimee also appears in other ways, as well. In one scene, you get to watch Claudia do a line of coke off of the jewel case for _I'm With Stupid_, and knowing Anderson, he probably worked Aimee into the film in a few more ways I didn't pick up on. Anyway, it is a great film, but probably not for everyone (especially smokers or those with weak bladders -- the film is over three hours long). If you have the chance and want to see a truly inspired piece of filmmaking, Magnolia opens in wide release this Friday. Although it's belated, I hope everyone had a good holiday. Wagner is considered by many to be the ne plus ultra of opera composers. Super heavy Germanic mythological densely orchestrated requiring huge voices etc. etc. The stereotype of opera and opera singers, the stuff that was brilliantly parodied in Bugs Bunny (the "Kill the Wabbit" episode is all excerpts from Wagner operas). I always had the feeling that bands like Yes and Zeppelin had listened to a lot of Wagner when they were getting stoned. Definitely, some stuff is lighter, some heavier, and there are lots of different styles of opera based on time and place. I hope this is not too boring for everyone! It's great stuff, definitely worth checking out. It seemed during the WSCE era that Liz was definitely suffering from a bite of the Lennon/McCartney influence." Very, very interesting. I'm not so sure about the "Uncle Albert" reference you made, cuz when I think of the song, I think of the pig snorking sounds. Odd...I love the Beatles, but WCSE is starting to be my least fave cd in my collection. Either that, or it's because my Liz cds are collecting dust in my room. Um...*help* I read a short article about Dot Allison in the Dec. issue of the Mojo mag last nite. For some strange reason, I was associating Dot with Liz. Anyone listen to her? Someone must have mentioned her on this list and I'm thinking about giving her a try. Anyhoo...I'm quite upset about the Grammy nominations for this year. I hope the Dixie Chicks or Cher will get something. Soo...if you hear of a Jive Records bombing, don't expect to hear from me for a few years. ;) Katie ();) NP: Trisha Yearwood's "Songbook - a collection of hits" ===== ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* "As long as no one asks no questions, I got the message. -Stone Temple Pilots. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? When Liz left Matador for Capitol last year, Capitol acquired the rights to all of Liz's back catalogue. I remember exchanging e-mails with Russ at Matador during that time, and he told me that they had shipped all of their Liz product to Capitol for them to sell. What I'm guessing is that all of that stock has been sold, and Capitol is simply issuing the album on their own imprint now. Since _Whip-Smart_ and _whitechocolatespaceegg_ were both already distributed by Capitol as a result of their deal with Matador, these albums haven't needed to be re-released the way that _Exile_, which was always solely a Matador title until the switch-over, does. Also, one failing on Capitol's part: It doesn't look like they've opted to reissue _Juvenilia_ and all of the Matador stock for it seems to be long gone -- none of the major online retailers have it listed whatsoever, even as a title temporarily out of stock, and one record store I asked about it at says that it's now definitely out-of-print. If anyone comes across any copies of it anywhere and doesn't already own _Juvenilia_, I'd recommend you pick it up.
