At fifty-odd, Sigourney Weaver's still better looking than most of the current crop of 'it' actresses. Of course, it could have been the blond wig and the cleavage--I don't know. Anyways, it's a good movie. The mother of a kid who's important to the film happened to resemble a potentially aged ECP (say around 45 or so) from my point of view at the Cinemall. Yeah, sure, maybe I'm reaching, but it blinked into my head, and I thought "Ah, gee...what the hey. Might as well share that with the rest of SSD". So there you have it, folks. Go see this movie. It's funny. Some of it will make you cringe, but it's just kinda cute. Or something. Little too heavy on the sparkling grape juice after the evening communion, so I reckon I'll be heading to bed. Good night, good morning, and God bless, Michael ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2000 08:14:52 -0800 (PST) From: Craig King Subject: first Liz song of 2000 >>First Liz song heard in 2000: Never Said. I was watching a compilation video. Coolness.<< The first Liz song I heard in 2000 was "White Bird of Texas". I was listening to a home-made Liz best of comp CD on the way home from my New Years Eve festivities at about 2AM. Nothing better than having Liz be the first music you hear in the new millenium! None of my friends or colleagues knows or cares about Liz's music, as you might guess . . . I feel like a bit of a freak in my profession. Always have, though I went through a period when I cared more about stupid diva things like my hair and my shoes and having a thrift-store mink coat (sorry PETA types) to feel more diva-esque. That stuff is bullshit, as I've learned . . . Moe, how cool that you are a Wagnerian . . . the real stuff. Actually I don't sing any Wagner. I'm a lyric mezzo-soprano and do a lot of Italian stuff, Rossini, Bellini, Mozart, etc. Yes, opera is an acquired taste. It doesn't have the immediate effect of popular music and it's not part of our culture (anymore). I still believe that great art, including singing, can show both performer and audience what it means to be truly human in a transcendent way and give us a way to make deep connections as people. It's about the human experience, but stylized so it's hard for us, raised on tv etc., to get into. The other night I watched the broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera of The Marriage of Figaro, taped last year. I don't know if anyone on the list watched it, but there was a moment, Renee Fleming singing the Countess's aria, that made time stand still. The opera is about loss and forgiveness. It makes me cry. But Liz's music has the same dramatic impact. Duke Ellington said about music, "If it sounds good, it is good." So Happy New Year and love to everyone. Just finished the annual "D to D" CD..Vol. 23..Besides female heroes PJ Harvey, Kristin Hersh, Sleater-Kinney, L7, Kim Shattuck (the Muffs), I included one of my (being an oldie) favs from Liz, "Fantasize." I was looking through some old posts on the Liz newsgroup and found out that someone had paid a *large* chunk of their own cash to get some early "WCSE" demos. It sounded like he was trying to recover some of those losses by spreading these discs around for a reasonable amount of cash. Could someone point me to this guy? I'd really like to hear this stuff and would be happy to contribute a little to him for securing this material. Also, anyone interested in trading with me for the complete "Girlysounds" (is Bliss & Fetish version the best?) on CD-R? I've only got a very low-gen copy on cassette right now. I don't have any Liz stuff to trade, but I do have some CD-Rs by Wilco, Replacements, Yo La Tengo, etc. Plus I've got a Matador Liz poster ("EIG" era) that I'd be willing to trade. Thanks!
