I don't know anything about mrvideos.com, but I do know about the video of Liz's show at 9:30 from 4/26/95. I have a copy of this taping which I picked up elsewhere. This show was the night following Liz's gig in NYC which has become commonly known as the "Glory" bootleg. It's a shorter set list than NYC, with "Crater Lake," "Wasted," and "Strange Loop" (3 that I can remember; there may be more) deleted. The video is definitely amateur footage as the camera often loses Liz from the shot and you can hear crowd conversations from around the cameraperson. But Liz looks fantastic and I guess it is kind of a rarity. Don't pay anything outrageous for it, but, despite some shortcomings, I would recommend it. Have you ever been so engrossed in Liz that you pass by your turn on the street? I mean, way past? Can't say this has ever happened. However I tend to get lost practically every time I drive from Milwaukee to Chicago because Chicago is just so damn confusing sometimes! Do you sing "that's them dancing" when listening to Whip-Smart or singing it in your head? All the time! My sister always sings the double dutch line too....and she's not even a Liz fan! 3.) Do you sing "and your girlfriends too" or "and your minions too" when you listen to Flower or sing it in your head? I actually don't really sing along to this song, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. 4.) Do people tire - seemingly pretty easily - of hearing you talk about Liz? Oh, just ask my parents and my sister about when I used to Liz at home. I'm sure my friends get sick of my Liz worshiping too. 5.) Do you feel the need to convince someone of their stupidity when they say something like "I don't like Liz Phair?" Oh don't even get me started on this one. My friend has called Liz practically every name under the sun, because for some reason he seems to think that the things Liz writes about represent the person that she is in "real life". Usually I just ignore him. 6.) Do you long to go on MTV's Fanatic and represent support systemers everywhere? It would be cool, but then again I wouldn't really want to meet Liz in that kind of forum. You probably wouldn't get to ask the kinds of questions you would really want to ask. It wouldn't suprise me if they gave you a list of questions to ask. Either way, I still hate MTV. 7.) Are you simultaneously waiting for spring to arrive - and yet worried about its arrival with "An Evening With..." possibly nowhere in site? For some reason I don't have any worries that "An Evening With" will be released by early summer at the latest. Did you learn to like it or did you like it the first time you heard it? >> Happy New Year Michael, I think that opera is an acquired taste for someone raised on popular music. For it me, my appreciation of opera came from approaching it not as music but as theatre. By working on operas such as Faust, Madame Butterfly and Der Rosenkavilier as a prop master and production supervisor I was drawn to the intensity of the drama of the works which bonds with and is driven by the music. The heightened emotional content of opera is what makes it so great. Pat O'Connor ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 13:58:29 PST From: "Julia Grella" Subject: Re: to Michael Actually, I hated opera for a long time. I thought it was all about excess and had nothing to do with my life or my generation. My two brothers were jazz musicians, and I used to gig with them. My boyfriend when I was 18 was also a jazz player, but he encouraged me to sing opera because I had a "real voice." In college still hated opera pretty much, but loved art song -- 19th-century German lieder and French melodies. I wanted to specialize in that repertoire, though it's almost impossible to have a career doing song recitals of that stuff in the U.S. Took time off and performed in experimental theater in NYC. Then went to conservatory for grad school and realized the physical thrill of singing opera -- expansive singing that calls upon all your resources, physical, emotional, and mental, and demands your commitment to the truth. There was no going back. It's like nothing else -- I'm not going to say better than sex, but just as great in a different way. Actually, the energy you use to sing is the primal, sexual energy, which I'm just starting to learn. So think twice when you see those uptight looking opera singers on your t.v. -- you don't know what they're doing under those frou frou costumes . . .
