Although it's been well documented on the list, it should be reiterated that the book is completely a work of fiction and not in any way a biography of Liz. As a novel, I actually think it's a really cool book. The author is obviously a pop culture junkie, which I can appreciate, and the analysis of EIG is intriguing. A favorite line in the book comes when the author is discussing Liz's absence from the limelight in the period between WS and WCSE. Joy writes, "Or perhaps you are thinking, Oh my God, that's right, Liz Phair - where is she now? - - in these dire times it is most surely her strong presence that can provide the balance and reason so lacking of late." Of course the line is meant ironically, but imagining it straightforward is much more fun. As I said, taken as a novel I really like the book. My issue with it is the fact that Liz gets roped into it at all. Look, kids, this book isn't about Liz and its plot doesn't really have anything to do with her. Someone on the list questioned whether or not Joy was aware that Liz is adopted. Are you kidding? It is this fact exactly that gets Liz involved in the book in the first place. It makes her the ideal rock star to be the "subject" of this story. It made me feel like Liz (at least her name) was really *used* in this book. It's like Liz is just a pawn, a convenient tool, for this guy's story (and we all know what happens when the pawn hits the conflicts). As a fan of Liz and someone who certainly feels that she does not consistently get the widespread recoginition she deserves, I feel like this is not the way that Liz should be introduced to someone who isn't very familiar with her work. I want to be careful about revealing any of the plot for those who haven't read the book and want to, because it's really better if you don't know too much. I really hope that Liz gave her permission for her name to be used in this book. Anyone else? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 06:21:23 -0800 (PST) From: mikey c at yehaw Subject: Another brick... For all you obsessive-compulsives out there... I didn't hate the film, and I too wanted to like it. I love movies, and I don't usually complain about them, but this was one of those instances where I felt really let down, not by the acting, not by the cinematography, but by the pacing of the story and the events in the storyline. as for 'man on the moon,' I really enjoyed it. I don't really know much about andy kaufman (I have never watched an episode of taxi!), but I have a feeling jim carrey did a dead-on impersonation. and I saw 'any given sunday' recently. long movie, but I liked it for the most part. not your traditional sports movie, but what else would you expect from oliver stone? I kinda wish al pacino had done a little stronger acting, he seemed lost out there sometimes, but it was good to see jessie hasn't drifted far from her 'showgirls' roots. next thing you know, someone is going to post asking if this has turned into the gene siskel memorial list. the way I see it, movies aren't so different from music, and I personally enjoy sharing opinions on them. like jase says, if you're not interested in it, skip it. as for 'liz phair, a rant,' I respond to this: >I got so distracted when he was talking about the >parents - cause apparently he didn't know she was >adopted or what. It really bothered me for some inane >reason... I have to disagree with you maybe. I don't want to give anything away, so remember towards the end where he talks about the record company making up a past for liz? they give her a set of parents and a college supposedly attended, etc. I think he might have known she was adopted, but at the same time, maybe he didn't and his references are just lucky. if you refer to the portion in the middle of the book where he writes that odd bit about the conception of liz phair by her parents, I agree it was distracting. but how about the cover of the book with that photograph of the woman reaching through the window of the shoe store? don't you think it looks like it could be liz? I sit and stare at that picture and feel a bit like shaleese must have staring at it on the wall. I wonder if I could find that picture somewhere... jake ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 14:50:32 -0000 From: "G.Hartland" Subject: Tabs etc Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Everybody! I just wanted to respond to various posts about the last rock star book...I mean, I know she was adopted and the book doesn't really give an accurate biography, but it's supposed to be fiction. I mean, there's a reason her father in the book was brian jones, and there's a reason the mother she has in the book is who she is, and there's a reason in that she grew up in nebraska, not chicago...it's supposed to give a feel for liz, not detail her life. Also, I'd have to say I kind of disliked the parts when he analyzes her music...I like the book the because it gives this weirdly perfectly accurate feel that would not have come through if it were a biography, and when he tries to pinpoint something about her (a-la a biography) it really doesn't work too well...it gets too cerebral. It's like, it's a great book because he gets these nuances about things, and not just about Liz. when he talks about Montreal, he never really describes the city, but somehow the feeling I got when I was in Montreal is in his descriptions...it's really kind of eerie. It's the subconscious stuff of the book that is amazing to me, that he never actually describes liz (he has this things about never seeing her face...), and yet the whole book has the same feel as listening to like nashville...both very strange...anyway, that's what I think. tim. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 17:56:36 -0800 (PST) From: Miz Phair Subject: rhetorical poll Well, of course, after handing down my own mandate, I came up with another poll. This one's rhetorical, though. 1.) Have you ever been so engrossed in Liz that you pass by your turn on the street? I mean, way past? 2.) Do you sing the "tensies" line or the "that's them dancing" when listening to Whip-Smart or singing it in your head? 3.) Do you sing "and your girlfriends too" or "and your minions too" when you listen to Flower or sing it in your head? 4.) Do people tire - seemingly pretty easily - of hearing you talk about Liz? 5.) Do you feel the need to convince someone of their stupidity when they say something like "I don't like Liz Phair?" 6.) Do you long to go on MTV's Fanatic and represent support systemers everywhere? 7.) Are you simultaneously waiting for spring to arrive - and yet worried about its arrival with "An Evening With..." possibly nowhere in site? 8.)
