I mentioned that Hello Sailor is a bit dated because it talks about people coming back from the Gulf War. Of course, if the album's delayed long enough for George W. Bush to be in office, I'm sure we'll be in a war and Liz will only have to change a couple lines. Gabe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. To me it sounds a little bit like old Soul Asylum, particularily something from the album "And The Horse They Rode In On" (I mean that in a good way BTW). Maybe that's just me. I can't wait to hear more stuff from Janet and I really hope she has a successful music career. And for some reason they've decided that now would be a great time to review "whitechocolatespaceegg"; follow the link to "NEW! Liz Phair" under "MUSIC" on the main page (I'd give you a direct link, but it would fuck up the frames thing they've got going on at girlson.com). Yes, it is very weird that their new music review features an album that was released going on a year and a half ago. Um, I think that's it. Have you read 100 secret senses Shelly- I really enjoyed that! I've heard Eva Luna is good from friends but I'm yet to check it out. Thanks for the recommendations! Glad to see Amy Tan fans on the list- Shelley and Kelly- is the Joy Luck Club worth reading if you're already seen the movie?? That is so cool if she plays the guitar!! Not enough women do! Interesting (well not really) fact- I asked my guitar teacher how many women/girls he teaches guitar and he said there were 5 out of 40! 5!!! But his daughter does too so I s'pose that's 6! I was looking through a music instrument shop catalogue today and all the models with guitars were male! Another thing annoying me today (if anyone's still reading) is that I figured out that all the books we read at school are either from purely male perspectives or male + female WHY NO PURELY FEMALE! Ugh I'm gonna complain to my English teacher about this! The video was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the writer/director of _Magnolia_, the soundtrack from which the song is taken. It is a bit of an odd choice for a single, especially considering there are much more accessible songs on the soundtrack that could have been released instead, but apparently it's the song whose theme ties in most closely with that of the film. I'm also a little surprised that the video is debuting on 120 Minutes, and not some other program. Aimee's various record labels this decade, Geffen especially, have really tried to market her as a modern rock artist, which is a little misguided -- her music has more to do with classic pop and rock. You'd think Reprise Records, who have released the Magnolia soundtrack, wouldn't make the same mistake. Also, the video is directed by a big-name director, features the entire cast of the movie, and wasn't made on a minimal budget -- a far cry from the usual "alternative" fare. Still, I'd definitely recommend checking it out now. The next time you hear this song may be when Aimee's performing it on the Academy Award broadcast, assuming the talk of Aimee getting nominated holds true. I hope it happens - -- it would be a complete mindfuck to see Aimee performing on the Oscars, especially when "Save Me" is far from the standard schlock that gets nominated. "You look like / A perfect fit / For a girl in need / Of a tourniquet," Aimee will open, and for once, the Oscars won't suck. (Okay, so I'm overlooking Elliott Smith's performance a couple of years ago, but you get my point.)
