Confidentially (this is just between me and the 950 of you), I've been thinking of ending my Netville hiatus -- possibly by adding new material (!), possibly just by spiffing the old material up a bit. I don't know, though; if I do end up doing something, it'll probably take me months, so don't hold your collective breath. I really need to be writing a paper about Yukio Mishima's novel "Runaway Horses" right now, but oh, God, I don't want to. Do I have anything else to say? What the hell, I'll do that poll thingamjig. Even though I never ever do. If Jase did it, it must be OK. 1.) Rate Liz's albums in order of your preference. This is tricky. Exile in Guyville is definitely first, and I'm not going to count Juvenilia, so that part is easy. Ranking Whip-Smart and whitechocolatespaceegg is much more difficult; I like them about equally, but in entirely different ways. Does that make sense? I don't care. 2.) What's your least favorite Liz song? Hmmm... I get bored with "white chocolate space egg" really easily. As further evidence of my short attention span, I almost always fast forward over the longish piano intro to "Canary," although the song itself is one of my favorites. 3.) What song would you request of her in concert? I've shouted myself hoarse for "Bars of the Bed." (Impression of myself at the 9:30 Club: "Bars of the Beeeeeeeeeeeeed! Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiz! Bars of the Beeeeeeeeeeeeeed!") 4.) What song would you prefer not to hear in concert? I wouldn't complain about any of them. But again, I get bored of "white chocolate space egg." 5.) What's your favorite Liz soundtrack song? "Rocket Boy," hardcore. Although lyrically I probably prefer "Don't Have Time." 6.) What's your fave Liz Web site to visit? Any but Exile in Netville -- the lack of updates fills me with self-loathing. Really. I can't bear to look at it. Mesmerizing makes me pretty happy, though. 7.) What artist do you think is most similar to Liz? She's pretty damn unique. Lyrically, maybe Tanya Donnelly? Especially her recent solo effort. Musically/vocally, I can't think of anyone. 8.) How have you fared in attempts to "convert" others to the glories (hee, hee) of Phairdom? Not too bad. I would like to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to my homegirl Kerry Miller -- right on, sista. OK, I guess I'm actually going to have to write this paper. Shit. What's your least favorite Liz song? I've never really cared for "Tell Me You Like Me". 3.) What song would you request of her in concert? Definitely "Russian Girl." Possibly "Hurricane Cindy." 4.) What song would you prefer not to hear in concert? Nothing comes to mind. 5.) What's your favorite Liz soundtrack song? "Don't Have Time" 6.) What's your fave Liz Web site to visit? I feel like I shouldn't answer this for some reason. Heh heh. Actually, I try to visit all the sites I know of. Ken's site is obviously a mainstay. I'm working on an update on mine... no, really. 7.) What artist do you think is most similar to Liz? Most similar... Aimee Mann and Jen Trynin. I agree with Jason about the lyrical depth in Aimee and Liz's songwriting. I think the same statement could apply to Jen's as well. All of them are wonderful and still distinctful, but I think they're all on the same wavelength in one way or another. 8.) How have you fared in attempts to "convert" others to the glories (hee, hee) of Phairdom? I think I've done fairly well. If the people I've exposed to Liz haven't immediately loved, they've definitely been made aware and equally educated. Liz's music is a difficult kind to truly appreciate if you don't have the desire. Still, I think I've done myself proud with spreading the Liz wealth. And on a sidenote, about the tentative title for Liz's album: I like it. To me, though, it sounds like an album that would have guest vocals on every track. Either that or a tribute album. Either way, titles don't mean much to me. I just want the NEW MUSIC! They're music is not totally similar, but I think pj is closer to liz than anyone in her ability to depict so many situations an convey so many emotions in one album. like liz, she can make being a victim sound both sucky and desireable, or being triumphant sound, well, triumphant, but also depressing. i've thought for a long time that it would be interesting for the two of them to do some sort of project together . . . i just wonder if they'd get along. 8.) How have you fared in attempts to "convert" others to the glories (hee, hee) of Phairdom? - --so so. I've definately introduced a lot of people to liz over the last six years. Exile is one of my favorite presents to give people. some of them have become total fans, some passing fans, some still don't get it. the best is my friend dan who I was in grad school with . . . he was (not to be too stereotypical) a typical jersey guy when he moved in with me (in the fall of 95). He was way into Bruce, hardcore rap and, well, less than exciting women artists (he was just "getting in touch with his sensitive new age side" he was into Jewel, indigo girls . . . .). Now we are both liz obsessives. Most of my friends just laugh at me when I won't shut up, but dan gets it. He lives on the other side of the country now, but liz is still a tie that binds us. yee ha. p.s. Kudos to the person who listed Run, Lola, Run as a favorite movie of the year. If you ask me, it is the best movie of the year. More than any other flick I've seen (a lot) it can be watched over and over and it has something to say, and it's inventive, and artistic and beautiful and happy and sad and what art should be (in my opinion). If you haven't seen it, you'll be doing yourself a favor if you do. really. aaron ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Dec 1999 09:24:46 -0800 (PST) From: Mike Connolly Subject: Blake Babies reunion? I apologize for the length of this, but I figured that there were enough Juliana Hatfield and Blake Babies fans to justify. From the CDNow.com's news site: Blake Babies To Reunite For Album Dec 1, 1999, 11:40 am PT Boston's Blake Babies -- Juliana Hatfield, John Strohm, and Freda Boner -- have plans to enter a Bloomington, Ind. (Strohm and Boner's hometown) recording studio next week to begin work on a reunion album for an as-yet-undecided label. The band will hit the studio with producer Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, Thin Lizard Dawn), where they will record an album's worth of material, some of which Strohm had in the can and recently gave to Hatfield to toy with. "I was planning on doing another solo record in December and I had a bunch of songs," says Strohm. "So I just scrapped that idea completely and sent Juliana all my music and said, 'Do what you can with it.' So she has been plugging away." Evan Dando, who played bass on the first Blake Babies lineup, is also a good bet for the reunion. "Back in the day, the four of us were all hanging out in Boston and it was just this very vital, creative scene," says Strohm. "Before any of the rock star stuff came into the scenario, it was just us with this great creative energy. I think I can speak for all of us when I say the kind of vibe we had back then is something that we'd like to strive for -- where there aren't any big egos getting in the way and everybody is bringing stuff to the table. I think bringing Evan in is a really good way to facilitate that." A Blake Babies reunion has been the wish for Boner for the last two years, according to Strohm, but it was how she brought the idea to the table this time around that convinced Hatfield and Strohm. "It was just a matter of how Freda presented it," says Strohm. "She presented it as, 'Hey, this will be fun. This band has a certain amount of chemistry, we just need to get together and approach it like it's gonna be a party.' I think Juliana responded to that. She has sort of come to the realization in her own career, after years of sweat, that music first and foremost should be a fun time." The Babies were a college rock staple in the late '80s/early '90s and helped launch the careers of Hatfield and Dando (the band's first full length album, 1989's Earwig, surfaced three years before Dando's Lemonheads broke wide with It's A Shame About Ray). The band threw in the towel shortly after a 1991 EP, Rosy Jock World. Since, Hatfield has moved onto a successful solo career, Strohm has worked with Polara, Antenna, Mike Watt, and fellow Indiana natives El Nino (and is currently finishing up a history degree at the University of Alabama-Birmingham), Dando has all but virtually disappeared from the scene, and Boner spent a brief period with the Mysteries of Life. - -- Kevin Raub ===== Mikey C Va Beach __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? One particular Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones, so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her Mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More stress. Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whiskey. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered that the elves had hid the liquor and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the coffee pot and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw from which it was made. Just then the doorbell rang and Santa cussed on his way to the door. He opened the door and there was a Little Angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas Santa. Isn't it just a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Isn't it just a lovely tree? Where would you like me to stick it?" Thus began the tradition . . . of the Little Angel on top of the Christmas tree.
