Rate Liz's albums in order of your preference _Exile in Guyville_ would be my favorite, closely followed by _Whip-Smart_, which I've been rediscovering lately. _whitechocolatespaceegg_ would be last, since I won't count _Juvenilia_ because it's an EP. >2.) What's your least favorite Liz song? Probably "Oh My God" or "I'd Like That," which both sound only half-finished to me. In terms of songs that have actually been released, I'd have to say "California," which is slightly more tolerable. >3.) What song would you request of her in concert? I would like to request "Shatter" because it is my favorite, but it might be a bit of a buzz-killer in concert, so I'd go with either "Carnivore" or "Blood Keeper." "Help Me, Mary" would be another possibility; I'm really surprised by the fact that Liz hasn't played it at all since the shows in '95. >4.) What song would you prefer not to hear in concert? Probably "White Chocolate Space Egg." It sounded great at the show in Toronto last fall, but since then, I've gotten tired of hearing it on live boots. >5.) What's your favorite Liz soundtrack song? "Don't Have Time." By far. >6.) What's your fave Liz Web site to visit? Mesmerizing, hands down. I think Ken's site must be the most complete one out there, and he's always continually updating it (unlike my poor excuse for a site for the mailing list ). >7.) What artist do you think is most similar to Liz? I know I will eventually get killed for continually mentioning her, but definitely Aimee Mann. They are both really smart, insightful lyricists who quite often write about the dynamics within relationships, and both have a dark sense of humor at times. They are also both extremely talented musicians who often don't receive the credit they deserve. Both seem more interested in following their artistic muse, rather than a commercial one. While they both write a lot of accessible material, they don't waste their time buying into whatever the trend is at the moment in order to have a hit. They also both have been influenced by a lot of the same music, although Aimee's approach is more "pop" than Liz's. And, hell, if that's not enough, they both share Buddy Judge as a guitarist. :) >8.) How have you fared in attempts to "convert" others >to the glories (hee, hee) of Phairdom? Over the years, I have managed to get quite a few people into Liz's music, but at the same time, considerably more have resisted. Those who I've played Liz's music for on an ongoing basis, a little at a time, seemed to respond more favorably, perhaps because they had some time to warm up to her. Maybe Liz's music really is an acquired taste for most people. Although maybe not as good of a tactic, I've had a bit of success with making compilation tapes of Liz's music to give to friends or acquaintances who like a lot of the same music I do, and I've had some luck with that. The only problem with that is if Liz's music doesn't connect with them on the first listen, they're not likely to give the tape another chance. Another thing I've noticed is that sometimes it's just a certain song that will set a person off, even if they've reacted negatively to everything they've heard by Liz previously. The weird thing is that it always seems to be a different song for each person, with absolutely no consistency to it. I've had people flip for everything from "Fuck and Run" to "Nashville" to "Headache." At least with a new album coming out in the spring, I'll have more ammunition to work with. ;) Cheers, Jase ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- "The sex you're trading up for what you hope is love, is just another thing that he'll be careless of. What's the first Liz video you saw? Hmmm... I'm not a big video fan, so I'll let Kim Gordon answer this one for me, in the interview Liz and Kim did a while ago (which can be found here: http://www.towerrecords.com/pulse/98/august/cover/index.html) KG: MTV told Geffen: "Don't give them any videos unless they're superstars. Don't even bother." LP: What do you mean, "superstar"? KG: Like a Beastie Boys or Beck. Somebody really huge. But we did a video with McCauley Culkin, and he's a superstar. LP: That's smart. I'll get Keanu Reeves. When you're told you're not a superstar, maybe that's the moment of creative inspiration, like: "Really? Well fuck you." KG: I always liked the videos you did. The first one, it reminded me of early Madonna videos, when she really had that pluck, she really wanted to make it. It showed a charisma. LP: I really like those old videos because they feel like diaries, and I don't keep a diary. I was at my parents, we were checking the VCR the other day, and I stuck in the tape and it's like: "God, I did that. Look at that." And they are kind of plucky, there's a little heroine in the story. Madonna's "Lucky Star." KG: Yeah, that's great. "Borderline." >6.) What's your fave Liz video? see above. >7.) Once. October 1998, Theater of the Living Arts on South Street in Philadelphia. >9.) Have you ever met her? More details, please... Not technically, though I saw her about an arm's length away. She and her husband were walking down South Street in Philadelphia the day after her show with Alanis Notalent. It just happened to be Valentine's day, and she looked super happy in anonymity, so I left her alone. I did try to catch her eye, and she gave me a smile. >10.) She borrowed EIG first, and fell in love with it. (I didn't get it back for the longest time, so I ended up buying another copy.) It's nice when it works out that way. :) I have also sparked the interest of others by using Liz quotes in times of despair. It works! What a cool survey. I didn't do the first one. Too busy lately. Can anyone make CDR copies if I send you blanks and postage for the return? If so, e-mail me. pat mazumdar@eagle.cc.ukans.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 20:31:25 -0800 (PST) From: Jason Tedford Subject: [none] When I came across Liz's page in the new AP and was greeted with "'Love/Hate Transmission' is about masturbating when I was young," I was certain that everything in the world was okay.  Marriage, kids, impending mid-life... still Liz tells it like it is.  I feel nothing but promise for the this next record and am greatly looking forward to my first "Evening with..." it in my stereo.   I dig the title, too.  It's simple, but implies an intimacy with the listener.  I'm already testing my dimmer switch for that all important first listen, and the perfect moments that come from hearing great music for the first time...But, alas, there is a cold winter to get through first so we must all bide our time out.  I got Capitol's winter sampler yesterday.  No Liz preview tracks, but it does have a sweet funked out version of "Let it Snow" from Luscious Jackson.  Very nice.  I'm lacking in Christmas music this year.  This is probably a good thing.   As far as my album picks for the year, I'm going to have to go with (in no particular order): 1)Ani Difranco - To the teeth 2)Fiona Apple - Pawn 3)Ben Harper - burn to shine 4)Beth Orton - Central Reservation 5)Meshell Ndegeocello - bitter with honorable mentions going to Aimee Mann, Wilco, and Stereolab. Of course I still need to get Beck and Aimee Mann's albums before the year's out. I'm sure I'm forgetting something here, but no matter. Oh yeah Luscious Jackson...goood. goodnite. tedford         __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. Yahoo!
