I've been listening to lots of live stuff recently and have noticed the odd lyrical discrepancy here and there. Like M-16 and F-16 in Supernova. Has anyone else noticed this ? Janet Rains is damn cool - she hung out with fans at the Cinco show in State College; maybe the glitter thing is overdone, but she's cool...and she's hot to boot...she's also a pretty good singer. Rock star who I'd like to fuck? PJ Harvey. No, Madonna. That question is laced with fucked-up overtones - disregard those last two and...whatever. Hi.:) This is my first posting. I can't wait for the new album, but do we really think it's gonna come out on schedule? Remember WCSE? Anyway, about the Janet thing. She's so nice, and soon enough I'm posting more about her at my site. I have a very long, and detailed story that I'm just too lazy to write now. Anyway, as nice and talented as she is, I don't think her voice meshes well with Liz's, but I do like her voice very much, and I think she is very talented. Here are my answers: 1.) What was the first Liz Phair song you heard? Supernova 2.) How did it come about? (Radio, magazine, TV,Lilith...) Saw the video on MTV. I was very young, but fell in love :) 3.) What do you feel is the quintessential Liz song? The song that belongs in a time capsule, that sort ofthing... There are too many. 4.) What is your favorite Liz song Too many! Right now I like May Queen, What Makes You Happy, Bloodkeeper, In Love w/ Yourself, Polyester Bride, Don't Have Time, Stratford, Explain it to Me, and so many more!!! They always change. 5.) What's the first Liz video you saw? Supernova 6.) What's your fave Liz video? Supernova is the only one I've seen on TV, and the other ones were shitty Real Player things, so I guess supernova. 7.) Do you have a favorite Liz talk show appearance? I saw her on Sessions at west 54th which was cool. 8.) How many times have you seen her live? (Details encouraged, I've been a fan since EIG but STILLhaven't seen her live yet.) Only once, but I was in the front row, and she said she loved me too, from stage. :) 9.) Have you ever met her? More details, please... I would've if that damn Winona Ryder wasn't there. Thanks for nothing Janet! JK 10.) What is your prize Liz possession? Janet at least got her to sign my ticket stub, which will be posted at my site shortly. Shameless plug!: My site rocks. I have around 20 rare Liz mp3's posted that are my favorite Phairites. I also have photogalleries and other stuff on Bjork and Tori Amos. It's a very personal site, and I know you will all love it. I also have stuff on Being John Malkovich, cause I loved that movie! Had third row seats on the floor (it's a gym). She didn't play long. Once headlining at ECU in some auditorium. David Mead opened. Very uncrowded show. They were giving the tickets away to people when we got there. I bought tickets way early (thanks to inside info) and got third row, but it turns out that it wasn't necessary. People just walked up and stuck their elbows on the stage when Liz played. That was an excellent show, unfortunately, Liz seemed disappointed with the size of the crowd. > 9.) Have you ever met her? What do you feel is the quintessential Liz song? The song that belongs in a time capsule, that sort ofthing... Divorce Song . . . so early it hit on so many themes that come up in her music 4.) What is your favorite Liz song (Howz 'bout one from each album?): Shatter/Nashville/Headache 5.) What's the first Liz video you saw? Supernova 6.) What's your fave Liz video? Supernova I guess; it's the only one I've seen more than once. 7.) Do you have a favorite Liz talk show appearance? When I saw her play never said on Letterman way back, I was fairly psyched, just to see her on t.v. 8.) How many times have you seen her live? (Details encouraged, I've been a fan since EIG but STILLhaven't seen her live yet.) Once--in Portland, ME last winter opening for Alanis. Never in a smaller venue unfortunately. 9.) Have you ever met her? More details, please... Yes . . . after the portland show briefly. Apparently there was a brief break in the tour after that show and Liz was taking off for a couple days. After the show she was rushing in the cab to the airport. Myself and two high school girls (everyone else stayed inside for Allanis, I guess, yuck), waited outside and when the cab came and Liz came out, she talked to us briefly and signed out tickets. I said,"I know yer in a hurrry, but I wish I could tell you all the millions of things I've thought in imagined conversations over the years." She said, "Isn't that the way these things always go . . . you know exactly what you want to say, but you just don't get the chance to say it." I said, "yeah, that is true, but I have to say I think you are incredible. Can I shake your hand?" She said, "Yeah, sure." We shook hands and I thanked her for coming to Portland. She hopped in the cab and as it drove away she turned around and waved to me. I walked to my two favorite bars in portland that night babbling like an idiot. "I met liz phair. I met liz phair." Unfortunately the most common response was, "Who's Liz Phair?" So, I had to get up on a couple tables and yell at the top of my lungs (this was on a friday . . . packed bars) "Liz Phair is queen of the world." just so those people might know who she is. 10.) What is your prize Liz possession? An original vinyl pressing of EIG . . . double album in near mint condition. It's cool to see that cover photo so much larger than on the cd. Also, my signed ticket from the night I met her. RE: Stephen King and liz. I'm from Bangor, SK's home town and it is fairly well known (even if you read his books and you're not from Bangor) that he is a big music fan. Most of his books reference some rock music, and it is often from a wide variety of styles. Plus, he is in a rock band called the Rock Bottom Remainders, that has a rotating line-up of other writers including, Dave Barry, Matt Groening, and Amy Tan among others. When the Wallflowers played in Orono a couple years ago, SK got up on stage with them for their last encore and played guitar to an (apparently, I wasn't there) smokin' version of "Brand New Cadillac" by the Clash, which is pretty cool if you ask me. Plus, he has three kids in their 20s. So, to assume that he might be a fan of Liz probably isn't a streatch. cheers aaron ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 13:18:36 -0800 (PST) From: Easter Subject: Re: lizzie questionaire 1.) What was the first Liz Phair song you heard? Supernova, which I took an immediate disliking too. At the same time I developed a weird fascination for Liz because at least Supernova sounded "different" to me than the usual stuff being blared. This was right after Whipsmart was released. I was at U.Va. when Dave Matthews started to take off. DMB was inescapable. At times I felt like I was the only one who didn't get this really great joke judging by the way it seemed that everyone else reacted to him. Plus Charlottesville is littered with DMB landmarks. All you heard was "He used to work in this bar," "He played at this fraterntity," "I knew him when ...," "My friend's friend slept with him." "I talked to him ..." Etc. Anyway I heard Supernova (I think as a MTV Buzz Bin clip, but I'm not certain) and didn't really like it. But it stuck with me. The local CD shop had posters of her all over the place and something about the name "Liz Phair" resonated just right. They had WhipSmart at the listening station. Chopsticks hooked me in. Supernova made sense. The rest of the CD sparkled. I bought Whip Smart. At architectural studio that night the guy sitting next to me happened to be borrowing Exile in Guyville from one of his roommates. So, since we were pulling all-nighters, he let me borrow it. The next day I bought it and she's been my favorite since. On more days than not, I'll argue for Exile as my favorite album of all time. 2.) How did it come about? (Radio, magazine, TV, Lilith...) Answered above ... 3.) What do you feel is the quintessential Liz song? The song that belongs in a time capsule, that sort of thing... Flower. Not because it represents the height of her musical abilities. But to me when somebody hears this song for the first time it seems that either they just don't "get" her and immediately develop some sort of higher moral system, as if they have never heard these words before and are shocked and insulted by the delivery. ("Listen to mouth on THIS one!" or some other expression of mock disbelief) Or else it just clicks and the person appreciates the role reversal and the fact that Liz is going to celebrate sexuality rather than repress it. She's going to use it as a weapon rather than be ashamed of it. And the fact that people DO get so offended by it says something to me. They are often the same type who wouldn't bat an eye if a guy sang a similar song about a female. They often don't see the double standard. For me Flower is Liz boiled down to her essence: to the point. 4.) What is your favorite Liz song (Different question, at least for me) Divorce Song. Mostly for personal reasons. At different times it's represented different things, but the content has always been relevant. 5.) What's the first Liz video you saw? Supernova. 6.) What's your fave Liz video? Dunno. Only seen the one. 7.) Do you have a favorite Liz talk show appearance? I've never seen nothing. 8.) How many times have you seen her live? (Details encouraged, I've been a fan since EIG but STILL haven't seen her live yet.) Twice. July and October 1998. At Lillith at Merriweather Post and at 9:30 in D.C. The Lillith performance was satisfying, simply because it was my first opportunity to see her live. In retrospect it paled in comparison to seeing her in a more intimate venue (not that 9:30 is tiny, but still ...). The day at Lillith was a rather interesting experience. It started early as I bounced around between the secondary stages and kept consuming alcohol rather than waiting on line for some actual sustenance. I was supposed to be there with about 8 other people. But they suffered from the whole large-group dynamic of not being able to chose what they wanted to see when they wanted to see it. They just plopped themselves down on the lawn in a spot not-too-close to anything in particular other than the port-a-johns. Since I really didn't know any of them all that well to begin with I just did my own thing. When Liz went on, the lawn was pretty much filled up but I couldn't be satisfyied sitting far away. So I roamed through the front of the lawn section back and forth during her whole set. I'm sure I annoyed the f*ck out of other people, but somehow I don't think they really cared about Liz so I didn't feel so bad. After her set I plopped down leaning on a shed well out of view of the stage besides a slew of other sprawled out people. After a few minutes I was called over to a blanket by a woman whose girlfriend had passed out. She was bored, so we talked. We later called over a woman who had assumed my previous post leaning against the shed. I learned that the couple (Jessica and Joni) had been together for close to 20 years and had driven down from Delaware to enjoy the show. But Jessica had had a little too much fun and was passed out. The other woman (whose name eludes me) was from southern Maryland and was at the show with her teenage daughter who had promptly ditched her upon arrival to the show. We talked, we drank, we smoked. I heard their stories. Lillith Fair played on. The lesbian couple had a teenage son. Their chosen method of insemination? Jessica had sex with Joni's male nephew. I thought THAT was not something you hear about on most days. The other woman was sort of toned-down biker girl. She had spent years running with biker gangs, but slowed down when she had her daughter. I got all their #s and addresses, but I never followed up. It seems like it would be awkward to do so now. I ended up staggering away from Lillith Fair during Natale Merchant and drove the hour back to Arlington, Va. convinced the whole time that I was going to be pulled over and arrested and put in jail for DUI. The 9:30 show had less of a story to it, but more Liz Phair. In the end, being close enough to her that I could pretend she made eye contact with me a few times made it all worthwhile. I brought along a friend who had not listened to Ms. Phair too much. In exchange he brought me to a Garbage show. I had heard about Liz's early career stage fright, but it was not evident that night. And the slide show was on the interesting side, as were the songs played with it. See her in a small venue. I think that's true of most music. The intimacy of being within throwing distance of all four walls adds a level to music. It's more like gathering in a living room with friends. Plus you know in a small venue that only people truly appreciate Liz Phair are there. It's not a mish-mosh crowd. 9.) Have you ever met her? More details, please... Nope. 10.) What is your prize Liz possession? Hmmm. I haven't done too much collecting. I don't have any of the boots either. I do have the poster of the rolling stone cover. I hold that in high esteem. For some reason I used to display it upside down or at an angle in my various rooms during college. My reasoning was that it didn't seem appropriate to display Liz in a conventional fashion. later d. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 21:43:03 EST From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: Poll And Hello I just joined the list yesterday, so I thought I'd do the poll as a way of introduction. First Liz song heard-Never Sent How, where, and when-I'd been reading stuff about EIG a whiole lot. Was going to buy the album to see what the fuss was about. Then I heard Never Sent on the radio and bought the album first chance I got. Never looked back from there. Song that belongs in Time Capsule-either Never Sent, Go West or Headache Fave Liz song-Headache Never saw any of her videos, or have seen her live, talk shows included. Never met her either. However there might be a day, sooner rather then later that I will at least meet her. I've written a book about an openly lesbian rock band that's part of the first openly gay/lesbian rock scene. The scene is very left wing politcally, hates alterntive rock, as does the band. The novel also explores the relationships in the band. Liz is a big influence on the scene, I originally titled the book Go East, as a play on Go West, but changed it when friends said the title doesn't have anything to to with the book. So now it's Sheila Brown In Love And At Work. If it ever gets published I want Liz to write a blurb for it and I hope it happens. Prize Liz Possesion, A couple of bootlegs I own of concerts and interviews with Liz. But if I had Girlysound, that would be it. Anyone intersed in doing a trade for Girlysound? E-mail me off list. One question not mentioned: I'm also into Aimee Mann, Loud Family, Mary Lou Lord and Blondie.
