Then I heard her latest CD. Her music sounds nothing like No Doubt. Don't judge a person by a video played on MTV, they don't usually pick the greatest songs. I actually met her a week ago and she's really nice (not annoying like Gwen can be). She's been a solo artist since about 1994 and fronted other bands for around 4 years before that. And she has her own record label, Her Royal Majesty's Records. I know this isn't the Bif Naked list so I'll shut up now. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The Bitter End is a small club/bar type place on Bleecker Street in downtown NYC. The stage is right by the tables and everything, it's a pretty intimate setting. I don't know if Janet is doing a tour or if this was just a one-time thing or what. If anyone has any info on this, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and Janet does have a website, and I would also appreciate it if someone could re-post the address because I can't seem to find it. Do you know she's an aussie but she lives in Brooklyn now? I've only heard one song of her's but I'm looking forward to hearing more. Anyway here are some aussie bands with females in them and aussie solo artists: Jebediah Pollyanna (Rayke's so cool) The Superjesus Fur The Mavis's Nitocris- all female Something for Kate Spiderbait Happyland Diana Ah Naid Lino Stella One Eleven Deadstar Antenna I got the Liz quotes yesterday and a Courtney one so here they are: "The objectification of your person is very bizarre. You become the same thing as the right pair of shoes."-Liz "Men would prefer to ignore womens complications, because its a natural instinct to ignore any complications that arent your own. For women that grew up being male-fixated, its long been appealing to keep it to yourself and make sure honeys happy. I dont think you can unravel that in thirty years. You cant unravel millennia in thirty years." Liz "Its weird when 12 year old cute, happening girls want to be introduced to me, because (they think) talking to me would be a coup." Liz "Sometimes I want to just wear regular clothes onstage. Then I wonder, if by not being so extreme can I still pull it off? I need my costume, my thing. Because my thing is a message. But then that gets mixed up with the idea of a woman having to be appealing to get across." Courtney But my fav is the Kat Bjelland one at the bottom of this. I thought of a new thread today whilst "studying" (exams next week then 2 months holiday- 2 MONTHS!!). Ok, which female and male artists -past or present- would you want to fuck the most? Mine are Melissa Auf Der Maur and the male, I'm undecided- its either Brian Molko or Stefan Olsdal from Placebo. Anyway, tada kiddiewinks Sally "Most of the time I dont think of myself as a woman. I mean, I dont go around saying "Oh I cant do this, and I just know its because youre oppressing me". I think I can do whatever the fuck I put my mind too." Although I've never heard her sing a song herself, I think as a back up singer the only song I liked her on was "Flower". Her voice doesn't appeal to me otherwise. I have met her and she is very nice and easy to talk to. As far as her makeup goes, I think she needs serious help,it's to bold and to much of a bold thing. I'm all for different types of looks but no matter how heavy the makeup it still needs to compliment the face it's on. I thinks Janets(in the 7X I saw her looked like someone threw the glitter at her and it stuck to her face. Other than that, have a terrific day everyone. I'm sure some questions have been covered before, but with them en masse I can put names with comments. Anyway, I hope you'll partake (and if Liz happens by again maybe she'll answer one or two)... 1.) What was the first Liz Phair song you heard? 2.) How did it come about? (Radio, magazine, TV, Lilith...) 3.) What do you feel is the quintessential Liz song? The song that belongs in a time capsule, that sort of thing... 4.) What is your favorite Liz song (Different question, at least for me) 5.) What's the first Liz video you saw? 6.) What's your fave Liz video? 7.) Do you have a favorite Liz talk show appearance? 8.) How many times have you seen her live? (Details encouraged, I've been a fan since EIG but STILL haven't seen her live yet.) 9.) Have you ever met her? More details, please... 10.) What is your prize Liz possession? Thanks for participating, if you do. paige- (moving from my more recent pelequake addy back here...) ===== "I know I was born to lead a double life. Hey, my name is Jennifer and I've never posted before...I mostly just read the stuff you good peeps put out and give an occasional "huh" or "hmm." Anyway, I don't know what possessed me to post this time, but here it goes...I was just reading what everyone had to say about Janet Rains...I guess Nicole, in particular, (whose website, by the way, I really like...especially "The Garden of Ewoks" b/c I have a friend who ALWAYS misinterprets lyrics and I make fun of her all the time) and I decided to throw out my take on da matter. One of the things I have ALWAYS loved about Liz was how she backed up herself on her albums. I LOOOOOVE her voice and the way she sings her brilliantly-crafted songs...and I remember that before I saw her for the very first time, way back in '95, one of my first thoughts was, "shit, this will be stinky b/c she can't back herself up." Granted, she didn't have a band for that tour, anyway, but I just remember thinking that. Then when I was getting ready to see her for the first time in D.C. at the 930 Club after (what seemed like) her million-year hiatus, I remember thinking that I was already biased against her back-up singer b/c....it wasn't LIZ. The thing is...(and this was an uncanny realization for me, after the show) I LIKED HER. I thought she was really good. I mean, while she's no PHUCKING LIZ PHAIR, I didn't think she was bad at all. Now, I don't know if I'd necessarily buy her album or go see her ALONE in concert, but as far as my predisposed notions that she was gonna suck cock, just b/c she wasn't Liz, she pleasantly surprised me. And personally, I think that's pretty damn good...so...that's it about that, I think. On another note, does anyone like The Jesus and Mary Chain? "Sometimes A Dream (Is What Makes You A Slave)" really reminds me of this song by them and I was just curious. Anyway, I hope everyone has a good day/night and that my FIRST POST was all that you hoped it would be...just kidding. :) Peace out, Jennifer ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Nov 1999 18:36:46 -0800 (PST) From: robert joyner Subject: Janet Rains I don't believe that Janet Rains is doing any kind of tour. The bitter end show was kind of a showcase type show. This week leading up to Thanksgiving, Janet is in Boston finishing up a few songs that will be included on her debut CD, which is due to be released just after the New Year. I'm not really in the habit of saying things that I don't mean. ....Does anyone else think that, tho?...... I don't think it matters if anyone else agrees with it or not. Most of us don't take a poll of the list before we form an opinion. The comment made in the guestbook was my opinion and my opinion alone. This goes back to one person's opinion as opposed to another's. I usually don't have a problem when people express an opinion that is different than mine about liking a particular artist, especially on this list because it most times leads to a flame war (Alanis Discussion anyone?). Even if no one agrees with my particular view of Janet's talents, that won't sway my thoughts on the subject. I notice this comment was never made on the list but made its way on here for some reason. .....But two people can both have good voices but not sound good together, and that's the case here...... As for their voices not meshing well, that is your perspective, but certainly not the only perspective to be had. Janet's voice was a breath of fresh air juxtaposed against Liz's, in this listener's humble opinion. .....Hell, I'm the one who fucking insulted her on my site o-so-long ago......I know it sounds mean...... As for you being insulting or mean or prone to personal attacks, I really couldn't imagine that being the case at all. Robert Joyner __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
