I realize that I am still a fairly new member to this list, but I too love it. I would love to talk/read about new recordings/shows/songs/etc by Liz Phair...but unfortunately I'm not on the "inside tip" on what is going on with her...just a "mere fan", so I don't have any worthwhile Liz content today. But, I have come across some great new artists (and old ones too that I'd never heard of/listened to) thanks to the wonderfully gracious members of this list. So...with that being said, onto this: From: Easter Subject: Re: support-system-digest V2 #314 "How about another thread? List five albums you remember your parents playing when you were growing up as a child." I listened to everything my parents had, everything I could get my hands on... Herman's Hermits ~ Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter (The album cover was red & I don't remember the exact name of it...but my Mom was a "Mrs Brown's Daughter" and the album was a gift) Elvis ~ Name unknown...this was printed on blue vinyl and was live. I left it on the turntable & it was warped by the sun...boy, did I get in trouble. Creedence Clearwater Revival ~ Anything. (My parents were both HUGE CCR fans) Johnny Cash ~ Boy Named Sue (My brother's & I LOVED this album & the song "One Piece At a Time") The Beatles ~ Another group my Mom loved & had everything of...but I remember Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band the most, because I have it now. There are tons more, I just can't remember the album name on many of them...Aaah memories. I often wonder what my own children (when I do finally have them) will think of my album/CD/cassette collection... Another thread perhaps? What are five albums in your collection that you'd rather your children never see? ~gunshy~ Shelly NP: PJ Harvey ~Dry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 06:48:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig King Subject: thread I really don't remember the specific albums, but here are 5 artists that my parents played the most when I was growing up: - - Rolling Stones - - The Beatles - - Elvis Presley - - Creedence Clearwater Revival - - The Monkees I am forever gratefull to my parents for playing such a variety of music when I was growing up. They would play everything from rock to oldies, to country, to blues to classical, ect.... I guess that's where I get my different tastes in music from. Thanks mom and dad! I've sort of had the same experience, although I think I can credit it more to my getting older than anything I've picked up from the list (sorry, list - -- but bear in mind that I could be mistaken, and my newfound maturity could indeed be the result of my years of list readership). I would put it this way: there is no one correct reason to like or dislike something. Making judgment calls on personal likes and dislikes is never going to work because one has no way of knowing precisely someone likes or dislikes what they do. Who knows, maybe someone loves a band you hate (we'll call it Band XYZ -- here's hoping there's not a real Band XYZ) because the lead singer looks like her junior high boyfriend; are you then going to say, "Everyone who likes Band XYZ must be deluded!" Well, you could, but you'd be a jerk, and your reasoning skills wouldn't be so hot, either. Considering artists in a non-dualistic, multi-faceted kind of way opens you up to so many new experiences and new viewpoints. You may still like what you like and dislike what you dislike, but at least you'll have thought about all the possibilities. Thinking is good. (FYI: I try not to weigh in on this kind of topic, because it invariably gets ugly within a few posts. I'm really hoping that doesn't happen this time, because I really tried not bash on anyone [which was kind of the point, no?]) >so as it generally seems to happen, i noticed that people are grumbling >about wcse again. i know this is a rather lengthy post for a person who has >for all intents and purposes been in hiding for months, but i felt the need >to defend the album. or at least i need to say what i think makes it >worthwhile. Yes, yes, yes. A thousand times yes. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm a lyrics kind of girl. I have absolutely no musical ability and very little musical training (in elementary school music class, I was assigned the rhythm sticks, and I was really bad at them); as long as the musical accompaniment to a song isn't outright *bad*, I'm a happy girl. While I was certainly cognizant of the new sound Liz unveiled in whitechocolatespaceegg, it honestly didn't have that much effect on me. It didn't change how I listened to the songs; I've always tended to focus on the lyrics far more than the music, and the lyrics were still there, still strong, just they always have been. Which is not to say that there hasn't be a progression in Liz's songwriting -- her words have certainly reflected her changing reality, from restless single girl to settled family woman. But she's still the same person, and her lyrics are just as incisive, intelligent, and breathtakingly original as when she was huddled over the old four-track; they just deal with different subject matter. This may seem like reductio ad absurdum, but I prefer to think of it as reductio ad claritas. Of course. Oh, my goodness, it's been a very long time since I posted like this. I expect you all will flame me immediately. While some of you had good musical exposure, I had the same songs repeated ad nauseum. I discovered the Doors, Janis, and everything after that on my own. Here's what I remember hearing the most; mom often bought one 45 and ran it into the ground. 1. Hundred Pounds of Clay/Tower of Strength-Darn, I forget the guy's name. But I can to this day sing both of these songs that I never put on my own turntable. 2. I Am I Said - Neil Diamond 3. I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing - Seekers, or Searchers or something like that. 4. Desiree - Neil Diamond (for some reason, I actually like this one. Don't tell my mom) 5. Elvis Presley's Gold Records - an actual album! And a good one!! I think I heard Suspicious Minds more than anything else, which is funny, cause that song aside I'm really an early Elvis girl. paige- ===== "Who do I gotta shag to get outta here?" No, that IS courtney love. Anyhow, in her article inside she lists EIG to listen to in case you've forgotten what slutty sounds like. This was in response to someone who wrote in asking what she should do about her mother-in-law who thinks she dresses too provocatively. I never thought of EIG as slutty. That's more of a Foxy Brown kind of album description. Also there was an article from some makeup artist on how to do different styles of make up with a large picture of Tori Amos and how to get her look. I love getting free magazines. On the what we heard our parents playing : God help all our children who will grow up with very foul mouths and bitterness towards guys named Johnny. For me it was Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Aretha Franklin. My Dad does not listen to any music(although he considers himself the supreme authority on it), so anything I heard was chosen by my mom. - ---melissa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 20:16:24 -0400 From: Mike Marlatt Subject: melissa auf de maur I don't know if this has already been posted but I heard somewhere that Melissa was possibly leaving Hole to play with Smashing Pumpkins (now that D'Arcy quit). Hole Writing For New Album Hole are writing material for their fourth album, and singer Courtney Love is working on a duet with racy rapper Lil' Kim that may appear in the Oliver Stone football movie "Any Given Sunday," according to a statement from the rock band's management. Love is working on the latter track with rap producer Irv Gotti (Ol' Dirty Bastard, Ja Rule). The band also has mixed the previously unreleased track "Be a Man" for possible inclusion on the "Any Given Sunday" soundtrack. The announcement came the same day Hole confirmed that bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur has quit the band. Thought all you Aimee Mann fans out there might be interested to know there's a little interview with her in the new Details. Nothing enlightening or anything, just some record company bashing and talk about the new record (Oh where are you!), and hanging out with superstars. Oh yeah, and some PTA. Pretty wicked picture, though. Glad for the weekend to be done actually so's I can put that nasty hangover behind me. Lucky for me, though, the Cartoon Network blessed my misery with a Scooby Doo marathon. This is what I aspire to! Me and some of my friends (and a drug rattled talking dog - - maybe Scooby doesn't really talk, everyone just sees it that way because of the repeated "experimentations" out in the woods) where was I? oh yeah, driving around in a groovy van chasing inept crooks who apparently don't know where to score some firearms. What a lifestyle. Now taking applications. I know madame Phair (LIZ CONTENT) is a Scooby fan. Maybe I could entice her to come along on my little adventure. We could make it a tour thing. I don't quite know where the hell I'm going with all this. I've tried to put in some thought on some of the recent threads, but my tastes seem to change with the hour. Marvin Gaye-What's Going On Plus there's some Bob Marley, Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, old Tears for Fears.... it's just too tough. I remember a few months ago there was some discussion on John Irving. I just finished reading A Widow For One Year and I thought it was great.
