Tanya and Gail we're all over the place, sucking in the > crowd, looking like ROCK STARS. Liz seems to be better for smaller crowds. For example, the ECU show earlier this year: maybe 100 or so people. She seemed completely comfortable with the crowd. The show wasn't as highly energetic as, say a Superchunk show in Chapel Hill, but that's not a requirement for good showmanship. Music performances on national tv don't seem to be her strong suit, but remember when she appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell show? She wasn't at all shy about jumping up and dancing to "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It." I think a good performance is more in knowing your audience than anything else. This also reminds me of a fairly recent Juliana Hatfield show where some weird guy kept yelling "take off your shirt!" and something about "I still have your soccerball!" where she was a little flustered. And of course Belly rocks. Tanya's been terribly sick and still put on a rockin' show with a swollen tongue. But even Tanya Donelly had extreme stage-fright during the early years of Belly where she'd throw up before playing, but judging from the later Belly year and Tanya Donelly shows, she's no longer got that problem. She's even done "lewd movements with towels." So, working from this example, Liz' performances can only improve, and they have been. - --- "Your manuscript is both good and original, but the part that is good is not original and the part that is original is not good." -Samuel Johnson "A'nta baka?" -Asuka d. www4.ncsu.edu/~djkim2 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Oct 1999 13:53:19 -0400 (EDT) From: "Nicole W." I don't dislike that she has changed, I'm uncomfortable with the manner in which she's changed that's all. WCSE is a good ablum and that's the point, it's just good. That is the first word that pops into my head when trying to describe it. Now EIG and WS, now those are friggin AWESOME albums. Thus, there lies the difference in Liz Phair today and Liz Phair yesterday, IMHO. I hope the future Liz Phair will once again entice me into using the word AWESOME (now I'm not talking about her live performances here cause I think she rocks live!). I applaud her trying to do something new, experimenting, but I can't help it if I didn't like the outcome of those experiments. Liz Phair is a bright and talented artist/musician. From the new stuff I have heard, I like what I hear, but than again that is live of course One other thing, when WCSE was released back in August, I was one of the ones defending it. I wanted to like it because it was from Liz Phair. I listened to it and listened to it (and frankly I do like it, but its no EIG or WS which I can listen to over and over and over and over and over again without getting bored by them) but it hasn't hooked me like I thought it would, like EIG and WS did for me after I listened to them more and more. It hasn't done that yet and that is my frustration. I keep trying to defend WCSE because I want it to make me feel the way her earlier stuff makes me feel, but its not happening. Why is that? Does anyone else feel this way? Seriously? I would love to just hear her guitar up front a little more in her songs that's all, really. Hell, I can sit there and listen to songs like You know Its Not Easy, Hello Sailor, Carnivore (I do like both version but the Raw has the edge), Can't Get Out of What I'm Into, Elvis Be True, Speed Racer, for hours. Her guitar playing is so RAD! I also dig Divorce Song, Shatter, Strange Loop, Never Said, (all EIG, WS)... If you listen to the WCSE Session CD, EIG and WS, those albums are so much different from each other and they are all AWESOME, because she keeps all the trademarks (awesome lyrics, awesome guitar sounds, etc.) which makes Liz Phair, Liz Phair. If you played EIG and WS to someone who has never heard Liz Phair before, I guarantee they'd guess the same artist made those two, but against WCSE, they'd have a hard time figuring it out, I betchoo. I think change is good, but not when one loses his/her identity. That is all I'm saying. And for those who posted that - ------"blah blah blah blah... She's better than she was, but she is still a below average live performer. Her voice shakes. You can see in her eyes that if she doesn't concentrate like crazy she's going to screw up. And she basically never improvises. I've seen Juliana Hatfield 5 times and Tanya Donnely twice (once with Belly). I've heard a couple of Liz boots. Ladies and Gentleman, there's no comparison. Liz is average live, at best." I think Mike is quite wrong here, but primarily because, as he points out, he's basing his comments on TV performances. Liz has become an outstanding live performer. I saw her shortly after EIG was released and again last year in Toronto (Jase! Did you ever finish part 2 of that meeting Liz in Toronto story?), and the contrast was vivid. She's become very engaging, chatting easily with the audience, with no hesitation in her voice or delivery. And she genuinely looks as if she's having fun on stage, as opposed to finding it a chore. I've also seen Juliana and Tanya several times each, both of whom I like very much, but I can very objectively state that Liz has surpassed both of them in her live presentation; at least from what I've witnessed. I agree with Mike that Liz's talk show TV appearances have not been outstanding, although I thought we had a better glimpse of her abilities as a performer (and a little of that improvising Mike feels she lacks) in her Sessions on PBS show. Nevertheless, Mike, I can only urge you to see her live and in person, and I'm sure you will be very pleasantly surprised. As is usually the case, TV and real life are worlds apart from one another.
