It isn't necessarily a bad thing. The simple fact that a song is catchy does not constitute as "selling out." If a song is very sing-a-long-able - this does not constitute as selling out. Hell - "Divorce Song" - I don't care what anyone says - is one of the catchiest songs I have ever heard. The melody sticks with you..it SCREAMS sing along - and anyone who has ever seen Liz Phair live will attest to this. "BUT YOU'VE NEVER BEEN A WASTE OF MY TIME..." is bellowed out in this gigantic audience UNISON of voices..from my experiences, it's the one that EVERYONE sings along with the most. I don't think songs like Polyester Bride and What Makes you Happy are sell outs either. They are brilliant. They are catchy, and EVERYONE on this list loves them, whether or not we think Liz sold out. Admit it..you like those songs...maybe not yer favs..but you like em :) So the bottom line: Liz wrote 2 more songs...no wait - Liz wrote ONE MORE ALBUM that we all adore. I don't care who says she "Sold Out" - this album may be catchy, it may have it's popp-ish aspects, but I have never heard anything like it - and I think WCSE is all the more proof of Liz's overwhelming talent. The songs still sound carefully structured, crafted, well written, experimental and well layered. I hope she keeps on evolving this way - because I think her talent is evolving as well. Regardless of whether or not the entire world, or just this list is listening to Liz's music, I haven't really felt any compromise on Liz's genius song-writing integrity thus far in her career - and I've been a fan from the very beginning. This far in, Liz has only delivered material that we (her hardcore fans) love. What else is she supposed to do? Selling out?? Um..no. She's writing great songs - and on top of it all - pleasing her fans. AT least, I know I don't have any complaints. Dan. Well, if it isn't the cool patrol. I'm sort of tired of people getting up in arms about "Selling Out." What I suspect is that when an artist changes musical/ lyrical styles and happens to get more popular, some people holler "Sell Out" because they're not the only ones "in on it" anymore. WCSE is a perfectly respectable album, and the examples someone brought up about Girls Room and Perfect World bear this out. And what's wrong with catchy tunes like WCSE and Polyester Bride? Would a robot megastar even consider doing material like this? I don't think so. I like EIG as much as anyone on this list, as well as the Girlysound stuff. Hey, the WCSE sessions sound a lot like the Girlysounds. Should Liz release her next album as demos to make the cool patrol happy? No way. She's going to make HERSELF happy, and that's what counts, because that's why most of us like her. In conclusion, since the majority of the people here seem to listen to bboys and christina aguiwhateverthefuckhernameisla, i really do not think that we college students deserve to have this wonderful category named after us:) hehe, pointless post, sorry :) steve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1999 11:09:18 EDT From: NRadkewich@aol.com Subject: Please remove me from the list Please remove NRadkewich@aol.com from the list. One of the most important things in the changing of the music is the changing of her life. She is not the EIG girl and she's not the WS girl. This is where she is now. She hasn't sold out at all. Rather, all her mainstream support is the reverse. Doesn't matter what year...what was the song they sang in the finale? When I went last year, they sang Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." Seems to be a trend nowadays with popular artists if you think of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Natalie Merchant and even Sheryl Crow is working on releasing one for next year. Oh yeah...about Liz selling out or however you like to put it. Why be so picky as to which record company Liz is under anyways? I don't get that for some reason. One thing I have noticed Liz has been doing is experimenting with keyboards. Keyboards...who else plays with keys? *hint hint* Another thing...Liz is trying to fit in somewhere, which is probably why she moved to another record company. Uhh..I don't wanna think too deep about this topic at this kind of hour. I certainly wouldn't like it if Liz experimented too much with keyboards though...imagine going to her concert and she sings Flower on piano. eeeeeeee....too late tonite. Oh yes...don't forget to vote for Liz. Keep her up at number two! http://www.freevote.com/booth/kuhris *yawn* and I noticed I didn't get that "YES! YES!
