On the subject of radio.... SAVE GLR!!!!!! Any UK listers might know of GLR (Greater London Radio) and it's eclectic music policy. They were the guys who bought import WCSE's and played it and told everyone it was coming out in the UK even though there was no firm plans for its release. As a result Capitol put it out. They also campaigned for Liz to play in the UK and nearly pulled it off until she cancelled the plans. These guys are serious music fans.......Shame their bosses aren't. It seems that the BBC wants to get more listeners and they say that music puts people off! So they want to get rid of music from the daytime programmes. People have the power to redeem the work of fool said Patti Smith and you can help. Go to http://listen.to/glr for details and write to the BBC (the site tells you where to complain). I've woken up to hear Liz on the breakfast show and i frequently hear her songs on a saturday afternoon. I can't think of another station that would play her and with her reluctance to tour there will be no outlet for her music on these shores. Visit the site, write and complain. You have the power. You can also send messages of support/letters of complaint to.... saveglr@hotmail.com. Decide yourself if radio's gonna stay. This one does polish up the grey. save it. She [Colleen Fitzpatrick, can you get more Irish?] was the lead singer of the somewhat indie band "Eve's Plum" who were actually pretty good. Around '95 Eve's Plum had that song "Jesus Loves You (But Not As Much As I Do." Really great song. Pretty cool video, too--filmed in an airport if anyone remembers it. Colleen, or Vitamin, sort of did the whole Alanis transformation in reverse order I guess. - --Mark NP: Maria McKee S/T ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Oct 1999 15:20:07 -0500 From: Meredith Robbins Subject: Re: and your girlfriend, too The lovely and talented Ms. Katie Brown wrote: >now where in the hell are Jenny Sayler and Merideth? And I actually have some Liz-related stuff to post, too. A friend of mine is a freshman at Northwestern, and he's told me that he knows a girl who went to New Trier and has in her possession a textbook used by our very own Ms. Phair... She wrote her name in the little space on the inside front cover and marked the condition as "Good" at the beginning of the school year and "Fair" at the end. I've been told that the girl who has it is willing to sell it, but I have been unable to ascertain a price as of yet--I will, of course, keep the list posted. ObOff-Topic: I saw "American Beauty" last night and it was fantastic. Highly recommended. I've always been somewhat wary of lists of car songs. Those collections of trash Harley-Davidson endorses always contain classic rock standards like "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Born to be Wild." Even all the collections I've seen that contain more recent tunes feel compelled to utilize commercial rock standards like "Where the Streets Have No Name" ("Trip Through Your Wires" is on the same album and is a much better car tune). Now, considering my opinionated opening paragraph, I realize my following car tunes are open to bashing. So be it. Windfall by Son Volt (maybe just a little too appropriate) Radio King by Golden Smog (from which I got the subject of this posting) Not What You Want by Sleater-Kinney Kingpin by Wilco Life During Wartime by Talking Heads Black Girls by Violent Femmes Some Jingle Jangle Morning by Mary Lou Lord Stolen Car by Beth Orton (again, maybe just a little too appropriate) 85% of what Tom Petty has written (with and without the Heartbreakers) Titanium Expose by Sonic Youth And, last but by no means least... Johnny Sunshine These are just what I got off the top of my head. I'm a little scared to attempt to make a complete list, for fear it will eat up the remaining 4 gig of memory I have on my hard drive. Anyway, I thought I'd just contribute my two cents, being that this is the point of SSD. I am eager to see what my fellow Phanatics think. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Oct 1999 16:35:19 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: Andrea Uptmor Subject: liz question Hi there I just joined the group and I have a question: how does everyone seem to know all of Liz's new songs already?
