Hell, the Dixie Chicks and Faith Hill notwithstanding, I don't like country. I just don't, for some reason. From time to time, I feel like a traitor to my region, but that happens to the best of 'em. However, I figured the whole Chris Gaines experiment was so off-the-wall, so quirky, so surreal, that I had to give it a chance. It might just work. Given the mass success of 'The Blair Witch Project" and its work at blurring reality/fiction in regards to the legend and the fates of Heather, Josh, and Mikey, the whole Gaines thing might just be the first attempt to copy it. After visiting the Chris Gaines 'site, I was kinda uneasy--this fellow has a long and fully developed history. It's /creepy/...the upcoming release is a greatest hits album by a guy who does not exist. Actually, this sounds more like the intro to that old Glen Larson warhorse, Knight Rider. Except I doubt that Chris Gaines has a William Daniels-voiced Pontiac Trans Am with an attitude. Also...for eighty-eight cents, I couldn't lose, you know? Of course, I've got to go and buy another one, since I didn't and won't open this one. Fifty years down the road, when nobody else cares, and the Gaines experiment is long forgotten, maybe I'll be able to sell a yellowed plastic box with a disc that nothing can read anymore for a grand total of $1.76 at auction on Ebay. Figuring that there are some things in life worth trying (like this Gaines album), and there are some things that are not worth trying (Russian roulette with an automatic pistol & auto-erotic asphyxiation), I guess I'll queue up for this one, like the mindless pop-media slave that we all should be. It's a power pop song much in the vein of "Surrender" by Cheap Trick, "Incommunicado" by Marillion (anyone out there know that one?), "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" by Elton John, "Best Laid Plans" by Kevin Gilbert and dozens of others I can't think of right now. Thanks again to musicmark for getting it out there to all of us. I love the fact that Liz is stretching her vocal range. She sounds great when she's reaching in Mayqueen and needs to do it more IMHO. Carleen has in fact moved on to Johnny Right On and I know I'm really playing with fire now. It's only a matter of time before those words start popping out--probably when she's with Papa or at Sunday school! Is it representative of her particular style, or is it a shot in a new direction? I'm trusting you, folks; you've yet to steer me wrong so far. ^_^ >> Ok, well, I personally don't know much about your own musical tastes, but I can tell you that you won't be wasting your money if you buy Tori's TVAB. It's a pretty good deal because not only do you get an entire CD of new material, you get a CD of live older stuff from the last tour, so it's a pretty good taste of Tori and what she's all about if you've never really got "into" her until now. I've been a travelling Tori fan ever since "way back in the day" when it was just Tori and her piano, and I've witnessed her style progress into the full-blown band that she's been touring with since '98. The new stuff is pretty good, it shows how Tori and her style have "evolutionized" (if you will) and there's something on the new album for everyone, I think I can safely say. The live album, which was recorded on the last half of the Plugged '98 tour, is also great and it's mixed extremely well, to make it sound like one full concert. Many people prefer some of the songs live rather than the album because since she's first recorded them she's taken off creatively and really put a lot more dramatic stage prescence in her songs. For example, The Waitress, which was originally on Under the Pink, is VERY much different live than the album version, and shows just how an artist like Tori can creatively expand on such songs. Hope this helps, and I promise you that you won't be disappointed. Yeah, Love/Hate has the keyboard thing, but otherwise the new songs are pretty basic. "Don't Apologize" is totally rocking with no overproduced effects. "Firewalker" rocks as well and has the cool keyboard solo. It is not overproduced at all. "Conversation Overheard Between Two Bouncers" is about as basic as you could get. I haven't heard "Hello Stranger" yet. I still think that Liz's new album will be a return to a more basic setup music wise. Plus, it seems the new album will be alot more rocking than her previous three, which I'm really excited about. I don't see Liz overproducing the new album like she did for WCSE. I think she realizes it doesn't work, and I thought I read somewhere that she says she likes the less produced songs the best. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Katie asked what's so great about Stratford? Well I can't speak for anyone else, but I think it's one of the best songs Liz has ever written lyrically. It tells a story, and paints a vivid picture to the listener. I suppose the fact that I love to fly has something to do with it too. Plus, musically I think it has a unique sound to it. I love the drum beat and the guitar is pretty rocking too. For me it just creates a mood where you can really feel like your right there with Liz "flying into Chicago at night...." But that's just my take on it. Craig NP: The Crow Soundtrack __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? "Push me and I will resist/ This behavior's not unique" -Pearl Jam ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 15:31:28 -0700 (PDT) From: robert joyner Subject: New album sound Raymond lew - excellent thread starting post about liz's sound evolving from stripped down to overproduced. here is my opinion of it: I think the new album will be a mix of both stripped down rockish stuff as well as newer sounds, i.e. keyboards. The points craig made about most the new songs being a little bit more rock oriented are correct but I think a good mix of different types will make for a better album. I think some of the songs on WCSE were heavy on production work due to the producers working with her. Before producing parts of WCSE he produced some of the cuts on The Smashing Pumpkins Adore album, which marked that band's departure from the pure rock format. I think Brad wood was definitely in a electronica phase at that time and it shows through in some of the work. She also worked with scott litt of rem fame. Previous to Rem's Monster album, most of their stuff tended to use non-traditional instrumentation (mandolins anyone?). I think this may have figured in to the production of liz's album. I don't think overproduced is necessarily a bad thing. Most people would say that The Beatle's Sgt Pepper's lonely hearts club band is totally a studio creation that is overproduced. Then again most people call this the most groundbreaking album of the rock era. An over produced album and a great sounding album aren't mutually exclusive in my book. "What makes you happy" is a great example of an overproduced track from wcse. Notice i didn't say a bad sounding track. I think "happy" is one of the better songs on the album. A carly simon meets ray of light type of song, the track has the usual great lyrics and one of a kind vocals from liz but it juxtaposes that with a pretty kick electronica interlude for instumentation. As much as i love exile in guyville, if she was doing a whole album of underproduced, stripped down songs 3 or 4 albums later i think some of her luster would be lost on me. I think now she is trying to stay true to the liz phair "sound" while trying to incorporate new ideas and sounds (read: radio friendly) in her music albeit with sometimes mixed results. While WCSE is more of a mixed bag in comparison to her first two albums quality, i think it is still a great album. I think the brilliance that is exile and whipsmart may have spoiled us a bit. just my 4 cents worth Robert Joyner __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
