It's not truly a 'profit', but a way of trading for my >_time_, if you want to look at it that way. Well.. that's not really the "right" way of looking at it.. :-) Unfortunately, with tape trading, you cannot charge for "time". I once got into a mix-media trade (I wouldn't advise it... it's too much of a hassle)... I was gonna put together a VHS tape in exchage for some audios tapes. Unfortunately, based on my hourly wage, that tape was worth well over $100.. not something I can recoup, not that I expected to. There's actually a bit of a story there, which I'll get to at the tail end of this post if you're interested.. :-) Anyways, I know this does tend to be how lot of trades are being done these days - 2 for 1 + postage. From what I gather, this is NOT how it was intended, and I've found most people who are doing it are people who have only been trading for the past couple years. The 2nd tape was originally intended to cover the return postage... not as "payment" for time spent. That time is forfeit the moment you agreed to make a copy (not that it really takes that much time). The whole point of fan tape trading is to share the music with your fellow fans. If someone wants something, his sole responsibility is to ensure it doesn't cost you anything. People started sending tapes in place of postage because postage does vary from place to place, country to country.. but it's generally acceptably close to the cost of a tape. Bottom line however.. if you and your trading partner both agree to terms, it's really nobody else's business. I've walked away from a lot of trades when I wouldn't agree to certain demands... Which brings me to my video tape for audios trade.. :-) heh Normally, for video for audio trades, it's a straight 1 for 2 trade - i.e. 1 vid for 2 auds.. with material on everything. The trade grew a little complicated when I wanted 4 auds from my trading partner. To make up for the shortfall, I was to send her some blank audios. She insisted I had to send her 6 blank auds, which I balked at. She was basing her number on the 2 for 1 formula,... I want 4, I should send 8 blanks. With the video worth 2, that drops it to 6. Logical? Well, since the video counts for 2 auds with stuff on it, applying 2 for 1 to the remaing 2 means I should only send her 4 blanks. I can see why she was upset by that calculation though.. all she's getting out of the deal is 1 video tape, and no blanks after she sends me my tapes. Anyways, we couldn't come to terms, so we parted ways. No big loss... that was when I realized the number of hours I'd have to put in to track down all the material she wanted on video and to transfer it... my 2 bits Patrick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 10:18:01 -0400 From: "Jaime" Subject: weasels ripping my flesh again... scary. seen this subject line before? Just kidding... but yeah, i saw that movie and i was pissed because it wasnt scary! none of it! why pretend you're a scary movie? they should have focused more on the twist! Anyone out there: if you would like, send me a ten dollar bill. I will take that bill and promptly mail you back a nice new five... all out of the kindness of my heart... Frankly these kind of deals sound fishy to me. Dont make tapes if you dont have time, its not like it costs you anything to make them or mail them, and you'd listen to liz anyway right?? I'm going to check there from now on when I have trouble finding music. go borders! mr.e, can I work a deal with you here? One of 3 in this city of 2,000,000 (Vancouver). In fact, I just got my illegal US Direct TV dish set up so I can get almost all of their games now (and MTV, which so far has really sucked- especially that TRL show. Oh but Tom Green ruled. Believe it or not, even though he's Canadian nobody up here (or at least out West) knows who he is and there's no channel that airs his show??? What the fuck?). Is there any Liz Listers in Seattle who want to get hook up with a bunch of people for drinks on late, late, Friday or on Saturday. My buddy and I are meeting up with friends to go to the UW-Colorado game but as far as drinking and hanging out, the more the merrier. Just be prepared to have a good time with people you don't know to well, that's what we'll be doin'. We can always set up a CD trade or something too.
