I was hoping to get a copy of his elusive new album, but I guess we'll have to wait..... CDNOW lists his album with an expected release date of Sept. 28..... not that I would buy it from CDNOW. For those who don't remember, David Mead and his band supported Liz on the recent college tour....and i urge you to pick up a copy. Support Liz's support. Catchy, huh? I mentioned before that I got a video of Liz's 4/1/96 show..... not only did she perform 'Fantasize', but also 'Rocket Boy' and 'Russian Girl'. According to the 'Liz Phair Gigography' this is the only known performance of these songs, and 2 years before WCSE even came out. Just an interesting note because you can hear people screaming for 'Rocket Boy' at every single show. and why not list my 5 favorite artists: (and happy to say i've seen all of them in concert) Morrissey Liz Phair Aimee Mann The Sundays REM How can you argue with that? Right now I am busy tracking down the tribute album to Dwight Yokum that came out a couple of years ago which has her singing "Miner's Prayer." Anyway there are two liz related things, one is that: "The sexiest song in the world in Marvin Gaye's sexual healing." -liz phair I thought that was interesting, I saw the video on that on vh1 pop up one time and didn't think it was anything special but to each their own. Second, in the same section the female editors listed 12 albums that apparently got them "in the mood" (?) and WCSE was listed second (also listed were albums like oyster by heather nova, the bends by radiohead and the greatest hits by al green). Sometime I will try to catch up to everyone with their favorites on the various liz recordings, it requires a good weekend of nothing but liz, like this one. A thing about BR-549 (didn't someone mention them ?) I saw them open for dylan (along with ani) a couple of years ago. Anyway after dylan had played a couple of songs he described them as one of the best bands to come down the line in a long time. no real relevance but sharing anyway. The condition is blanks plus postage (that is, you send me 4 CDs and enough $ to cover return postage, and I'll burn GirlySounds onto two of 'em and send 'em back to you). Just make sure that they're not Memorex CDs. So, to pick the 3 lucky winners, send me your favorite band names. The ones that I like best will be the winners. :) (Examples: My two favorite band names are "Lee Press-On and the Nails", which is actually a really good band, and "Jesus Chrysler Supercar", which I think the world could live without....). I've been into Liz since late fall of '93 (a while after Exile came out & people were starting to talk). Anyway . . . does anyone out there, or I guess in the greater Boston/New England area (I'm writing from Portland) listen to Red Sox games on the radio . . . you know, Joe Castiglione & Jerry Trubiano? Well, I have been listening to these games for years (there is something about baseball on the radio that slays baseball on t.v.) and over the past few years they have got themselves a very interesting music programmer. Every time they come back to the game from a commerical break, there is some cool music playing . . .everything from Rolling Stones to Replacements. I've always thought this was pretty cool in the past, but this summer (you see what's coming right?) it has gotten even cooler. At least once a game when they are coming back from commercial I've heard the long harmonica blast and groovin' drums of "Baby Got Goin'." I've also heard the beginning of "Johny Feelgood" on at least four or five occassions. I bet 99% of the people listening don't know it (and there are probably thousands of listeners or more for each game), but they are getting little doses of Liz Phair everytime they tune into their beloved Red Sox. Pretty subversive and cool if you ask me. so much for my first post . . . but in a tangential way it relates to another thread . . . not only am I a straight male, but one who loves baseball, intensely. Yet, liz is still my favorite (and has been) in ways that I can't even really explain (although to which I am sure most of you can relate). thanks for the space, aaron ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 10:28:46 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig King Subject: L/H Transmission Well, I just heard Love/Hate Transmission and I can't believe some people said it was the worst song Liz has ever wrote. I love this song! It's so catchy and I like the lyrics too. Especially the line that goes something like "...my mind is bitching to my head...." or something to that effect. Very cool. Then again maybe I like it so much because it sounds like 60's British pop/rock, which I love. Either way I think it's a really catchy tune and definately worthy of being on the new album whenever the hell it comes out. I know most people haven't heard the song yet, but since there was a discussion about it awhile ago I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. Thank God for idle minds and Rolling Stone. The rest of this post is tongue-in-cheek, so do bear with me. I was sitting in the basement of the library between classes, browsing back issues of the U. S. Naval Institute's "Proceedings" and "Rolling Stone", and I came across a photo of Miz Morrisette that answered once and for all why it is that the former infatuation junkie "made it" while ECP managed not to. It's all about appearances. In our image-obsessed culture, image is everything, despite what Sprite says. This picture of Morrisette had caught her in a very well, 'pissed' moment. Someone said that both women's songs were about some serious anger, and well, yeah...don't you think? Back to image: I've seen a lot of pictures of ECP since I first began dabbling in Phairdom, and although "Exile in Guyville" (especially Jealousy) has an angry snarl to rival anything on "Jagged Little Pill", ECP didn't have the pissed look down pat when on stage. The Canadian did. Her shows seem to consist of an angry stalking monster, fueled by rage (Bucky O'Hare's Righteous Indignation, perhaps?) whereas way back when, ECP didn't quite have the stage presence thing down pat. Of course, from objective consideration, this is just the way it was. The Canadian had hell, at least a decade or more of performing experience, and ECP didn't. Showmanship won out in early '90s America, and the Canadian had it down pat. Not that it's a bad thing--we've still got a clique of ECP evangelists, enjoying everything she puts out. Just a new observation, out here exiled in noweheresville.
