I really like the dixie chicks, but somehow, I don't think they would qualify, esp based on brian's definition (they have been embraced by nashville as far as I know). but to counter that, some of their material does seem to reach back and pull from traditional country roots. continuing on the alt-country thread, I picked up that compilation I had mentioned before, it's called 'exposed roots: the best of alt.country' and it is a double disc. included artists: lucinda williams, blue mountain, gillian welch, whiskeytown, golden smog, jimmie dale gilmore, freakwater, meat puppets, gourds, br5-49, tangletown, cheri knight, the jayhawks, kelly willis, steve earle, southern culture on the skids, johnny cash, the handsome family, vic chestnutt, honeydogs, alejandro escovedo, marlee macleod, lambchop, and gram parsons. it was only $12.99 at best buy (if you have those), so if anyone is interested in exploring some alt-country, I think it's a good start, there are several bands that have been mentioned on here. mr.e: picked up 'last chance for 1,000 yrs: dwight's hits for the 90s,' have you heard it yet? it's got his version of 'crazy little thing called love,' I swear I hear elvis comin' through... tedford (a fellow jason), I agree with your liz favs mostly, but unfortunately, I can't say I have been lucky enough to hear any of her non-album material (except what she played at lilith). I'm beginning to feel deprived... oh, no one has mentioned any in a while, but I had my first dream with liz content the other night. liz, ani difranco, and claire danes were all acting in a play at a college and they were giving away free tix at the record store. don't ask me where that came from, but I was pretty damn excited to be going... jake (b/c there ARE too many jason's on the list, I'm retiring that name in favor of one I like better) forgive me if I go astray... First up, Seattle. Spent a week there to enjoy Bumbershoot and R.E.M. The greatest town in the world for sure and also it has the greatest amount of REALLY beautiful girls i've been to (yes a straight Liz fan). Chicago was cool, but after the big S it was a bit of an anti-climax. The women were quite cute, but the Emerald city wins. Saw the Cubs lose and got to enjoy Son Volt twice. But the big news was i got to see Michigan!!!!! Due to mis-communication/problems and general grief i ended up in Grand Rapids/Kentwood for 6 hours to visit my friend. Now Seattle may have the most beautiful girls, as a general thing, but the most beautiful girl in the world lives in MI. She's a total angel and i wish she was mine. alas it will never be, but she's a great friend and a better quarter of a day i couldn't ask for. As for Alt Country. Try any of the following....... Son Volt, Wilco (and of course Uncle Tupelo, the instigators of the whole shebang), Grand Drive, Mojave 3, Calexico, Lullaby For The Working Class, Damien Jurado, Gourds, Blacks, Neutral Milk Hotel (not actually AC, but just get their records anyway) , errrr my brain has hit jet-lag mush, but there are loads of great bands being lumped in with the AC tag, any "movement" will attract bandwagon jumpers and interlopers and sometimes bands that defy description (Neutral Milk Hotel for example) will be tacked into something to help promote that there is a movement. well that's what happens in the UK most of the time, you van't just be, you have to be part of something. Music journalists, scum of the earth. It's music not categories that count. Anyway, i'm off to sleep and try to work out where all my english money is as shops here don't take dollars! Can I be you, please? How the hell do people get to go to this many shows without lots of expensive traveling, etc.? Maybe I'm just a pussy loser and a bad, bad fan. I'll be seeing Tori in Austin and Dallas, and these will be my 2nd and 3rd shows. At least I'll be in the first 10 rows in Dallas! Basically, I guess I'm just a sad, sad monkey with no shows under my belt. Please, don't point and laugh. It's rude. >> Now I say: Hey, you're not a "sad monkey with no shows under your belt" at all. And TRUST me, you do NOT want to be me. I started following Tori in 96, and compared to a LOT of people I know, 15 or 16 shows is NOTHING. There's this girl who went to 70 shows in the Plugged 98 tour, and I mean, it's like, GET A FUCKING LIFE. (Needless to say I don't like this girl.) There are many fun and friendly people that follow Tori, but then again, there's that girl I just mentioned who thinks it's like some kind of status thing, she felt that her shit didn't stink because she had been to more shows than anyone else. I say she can go piss up a tree. I asked her once how she could afford doing so many shows, and she just said "I saved up for a long time." My ass. This girl uses people left and right and she is very dishonest. How *I* could afford going to these shows, I really don't know. People on the tour do trades and stuff.... like, if there's a show in Michigan, someone will give me a ticket if I let them sleep on my couch or something, or I'll give someone a ride to the next show in exchange for a ticket or whatever. It's kind of a big family that helps everyone out. However, I think that Sunday was my last show, I can't afford the time or the money to go to any more on this leg of the tour. (I say this "leg" of the tour because there will be some solo dates later on WITHOUT Alanis. But you didn't hear that from me.) I was THINKING that I'd be able to make the Dallas and Houston shows, which are solo, but instead I had to buy myself a new camera for photography class. Damnit. Priorities suck. I'm at the point where I don't even do it to see Tori anymore, I mean, yes, she's a part of it, but seeing my friends at the shows is what I'm more excited about. Ok, I'm out, got art homework to do. It might even be true that more people like both than like one or the other, but it's still a strange phenomenon that there are a definite number of people who like one or the other. I don't know of any other two of Liz's songs that follow that strange pattern. What else was I going to say? Shit. Oh yeah. Ruthie, I'm very forgetful. Plus, it's a female voice screaming "JEALOUSY!" I thought it *might* be you, but I know you say your voice ain't loud, hence maybe it's *not* you. Hmm. Alt-country. I don't think I'm a fan, but someone mentioned Wilco/Billy Bragg's album Mermaid Avenue or whatever it's called as an alt-country album. I completely agree, and I am gay!! It has nothing to do with it. I really like Tom Petty too, and the Toadies, David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and the INDIGO GIRLs (haha!) all of whom sing about/towards/regarding other women in *that special way*...just because a song is about gals doesn't mean I can't relate. That would really piss me off if someone ever judged my music based on my sex, or sexual preference for that matter. If it's a well-written song and we're all human beings - I think we all have the capability to appreciate it. Wow..sounds pretty damn..secondary schoolish when I actually read the words. It's true though. I mean sure - liz is talking about MEN in relationships, so anyone who is attracted to men has no problem singing along - but that doesn't mean it is DIRECTED towards only girls and phags. Hell - maybe she is singing directly *to* men. If you look at it that way - girls - put yer Space Eggs away - she's only singing to Guyville. But of course, we're not looking at it that way - we're all whip-smart adults here and no matter where we put our privates, it really shouldn't affect the way we hear a nifty lyric. Also - someone started a little thread of wondering what it is Liz is doing/will release next. Will it be an EP? A full album? She followed up EIG pretty fast with WHIP-Smart..you never know... I would love her to include: 1.DON'T APOLOGIZE 2.FIREWALKER 3.YOU HAVE NO IDEA (I will say it now - Liz is an idiot if she never records this amazing, beautiful gem of a song) (okay, that was harsh - but I kinda mean it because it'd be the biggest waste of music I have ever heard of.) 4. It is a nothing short of a fantastic read. Sadly, I must dash the hopes of all those who thought Liz might be showing up in a roll (at least major) in the current film version that is in production. Someone (I forgot who) said they saw a rumor where Liz might be playing Marie. That roll was actually taken by the former Mrs. Kravitz, Lisa Bonet. The good news? The movie is being shot on location in our very own Chicago, Illinois, primarily in the Wicker Park area. It is also supposedly littered with cameos of various rock 'n' rollers. The only one I can confirm as definite is the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. The film was shot from April through July and I believe our Mrs. (how sad that I wrote that) Phair was in town a fair bit those months. So I'd say we've got a decent shot at Liz on celluloid. Here's hoping anyway. For those who've actually read the book the rest of the cast goes something like this: John Cusack-Rob, Todd Louiso-Dick, Sara Gilbert-Dick's girl, Iben Hjejle-Laura, Harold Ramis-Rob's dad, Lili Taylor-?, Natasha Gregson-Wagner-?, Beverly D'Angelo-?, Catherine Zeta Jones-one of Rob's old girlfriends...and random others.
