Aimee's incredible and typically beautiful version of "The >Christmas Song" (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire) will be finally >released on CD on a compilation called "Viva Noel: A Q Division Christmas". > The release date is October 12th. Previously this recording was only >available on a local Boston compilation in the early-to-mid 90's on >cassette only! It is slow, has that really intimate Aimee vocalization and >has a surprise and appropriate twist at the end of the song, but you'll >have to wait to hear it. Anyone who was fortunate enough to catch the end >of the 'til Tuesday shows heard this performed live with Jon Brion, Buddy >Judge and Michael Hausman at holiday time. Also on this CD are Merrie >Amsterburg covering "2000 Miles" (Pretenders), Jules Verdone doing an >original called "Little Christmas", and Jen Trynin also covering "The >Christmas Song". I'm sure the CD will be available through the Q Division >Web site www.qdivision.com or 800-284-2964. And secondly, why haven't you written me back? I know you're moving and >all, but sheesh... The copy I have of _Bachelor No. 2_ is the limited preview 7-song EP that Aimee was selling at her shows this summer. I wasn't able to make it to any of the shows myself, but another list member was kind enough to offer to pick me up a copy of the disc (thanks again, Nora!). If the songs on the EP are any indication, I think _Bachelor No. 2_ will undoubtedly be Aimee's best album yet. "Red Vines" is, in my opinion, the best song she's ever recorded, the kind of song that *should* be a hit, and "Calling It Quits" is nearly as good. The slower numbers really get under your skin with repeated listenings, much like the midtempo tracks on _I'm With Stupid_. Actually, to be honest, these songs seem like a natural extention of the musical territory Aimee explored on _Stupid_, only the individual songs are even better (which is saying a lot), and at times utilize a subtler approach. The melodies are among her most sophisticated, but are still very much pop-based, and the lyrics are among her finest as well. "Just Like Anyone," a song she wrote after hearing about Jeff Buckley's death, is probably one of the saddest and most poignant she's written. The full album is expected to be released this fall; it was recently confirmed that Aimee has finalized a deal to buy the masters back from Interscope. The most recent thing that I've read indicated that Aimee still plans to release the album on her own label, but is trying to work out a deal with a major for distribution. She would still own the recordings, though, and would only be licensing them, so there's no way that she would get screwed over by the majors like in the past. The upcoming film Magnolia makes use of seven of her songs, and the soundtrack looks like it will be released in December on Warner Bros. Records. Having so many songs prominently featured in the film and on the soundtrack will probably grant Aimee the most exposure she's had since her 'Til Tuesday days. It will be great to finally see her get her due. Sorry for the delayed response, Robbie. I will also try to reply to the email you sent me a while back, once I figure out which folder I saved it to. Also, I'm not sure, but I think you're in San Francisco, right? If so and in case you haven't already heard, Aimee is playing at Slim's on September 25. I believe there are plans to sell more copies of the EP at the upcoming shows, so you can probably get ahold of one then. If they do happen to sell out before then, let me know; I'd be more than happy to make you a tape of my copy. Thought I'd pop out of Lurk Ness to take a breath and say hi to everyone. Since I'm in Michigan and I'm NOWHERE near NY, if someone could snap a pic of that ultra-cool Liz billboard and post it on the web, I would love you forever. I haven't been to NYC since March, and well... I know it wasn't up then. I noticed people are listing the artists that "mean the most" to them lately, and I thought "what the hell" and list mine. So, besides Liz, they are: Tori Amos Natalie Merchant Ani DiFranco Pepper McGowan (http://pepper.by.net) Ashley Peacock (my "fiance," http://www.dreamthief.com) Jill Jack (http://www.jilljack.com) Melissa Ferrick Susan Tedeschi Depeche Mode Martina McBride R.E.M. (old school, though. Not newer stuff.) Alright, I just saw my 15th or 16th Tori show last night in Clarkston, MI, and it's probably my last on this tour... does anyone know if Liz is coming anywhere in the Midwest any time soon? I'm out. It's safe to say that there was all of about 200 Canadians and 10,000 Americans (they stick out like a sore thumb up at here at this age!). I fucking loved it. If you able to appreciate the making of music rather than the making of songs it was outright outstanding. It certainly isn't the Dave Matthews Crowd, although I did see some fratboys (takes on to know one). Some of the tunes could easily be transplanted into any industrial progressive techno club without anyone leaving the dance floor. Any Chemical Brothers or Fatboy Slim fan would appreciate it. PS. I am not gay. Contrary to what a couple of the narrow minded (not Liz-like) women (girls?) on the list think, some guys don't listen to Liz because they empathize and fantasize with her (like many of the gals do). I like Liz because she represents the attitude, insecurity, and boundary-less way she communicates, that I look for in a woman. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 13:21:19 -0400 (EDT) From: "Nicole W." Subject: ye olde "Only Son" debate What I've found out about "Only Son" is that there are generally two classes of people. The "Only Son" tribe and the "Baby Got Going" troop. I am part of the "Only Son"-ers. The deal is that, for some reason, you either like one song or the other. I really like "Only Son." This discussion has happened before, and I've mentioned this before: if you have the WBCN airing of the October 6, 1998 concert at the Avalon in Boston, you can hear me scream "Only Son!" after, I think, "Mesmerizing." Someone goes "Jealousy!!" and then I go "Only Son!" Anyway, I just don't enjoy "Baby Got Going" at all. But I don't feel guilty about it, cuz Liz didn't write it. Man, I wish I was in NYC to see the like... quadruply mentioned billboard. How cool. Okay well that's all. If she was actually going to release an EP anytime soon, what new songs would be on there? So, we're limited to eight songs right? 1. Can't Get Out of What I'm Into 2. Hello Sailor 3. Love/Hate Transmission 4. Conversation Overheard Between Two Bouncers 5. Firewalker 6. Don't Apologize Those are the six new songs we know of, what about the other two? We're guessing Blood Keeper and something else. Omg...better make the eighth song Bars of the Bed, I'm all for that. What does everyone else think?
