"I know about Lucinda Williams, but can anyone else suggest some good alt-country?" Ms. Williams isn't exactly alternative. A throwback probably describes her more accurately, to the kind of country that brought the world Hank Williams Sr. (favorite of alcoholics in movies everywhere) and "King of the Road." Anyway, when I want country I go to Lyle Lovett or Mary Chapin-Carpenter... mainstream and sweet. I never was a Dixie Chicks kinda guy. Liz note -- made a pilgrimage to the spot in Garden of the Gods, Colorado where the photo shoot for WCSE took place and squatted in the same rock formation where Liz was photographed. May not sound like much to those who have touched the goddess, but I've never even seen her play, so this is big for me. I'm never washing my red-stained jeans again. Do not miss Kelly Willis' new album 'What I Deserve'. Kelly has several albums, in fact..... I recently saw Kelly open for Beth Orton in Philadelphia...... Beth, herself asked Kelly to join the tour this spring/summer. That was an amazing show, by the way. Beth finished the show with "Feel To Believe", a live rarity. He toured America before he toured his home country and when he did tour here, it was only for those who were 18+, you think he would have done all ages shows considering he's only 20, he should be able to sympathise with under-18's but NO! He obviously gives America prefence over Australia, and he lives there, so I suggest that his Australian citizenship should be taken away and he will never be regarded as an Australian again! This and his little comment about how he regards himself to be "the best australian songwriter of all time" (yeah, what fucking ever!) has made me utterly despise him. Fellow support systemers please join me in a boycott of Ben Lee, well at least fellow aussie support systemers, as he doesn't deserve our time and money (apart from songs with Liz and Melissa Auf Der Maur and anyonelse of good mind that he happens to get play with him)!>> (I know it's off topic, sorry) I'm a huge Ben fan and I heard of this also from the Ben Lee list. Most artists when they get slightly big don't book their own shows, so I can see the possibility of whoever did his booking being at fault for the previous commitments here in the states. As for the non-all-ages shows, it's possible that there was a lack of all-ages venues that were willing to host shows by him. I know where I'm currently going to school (Seattle) there are soon going to be no all-ages venues because of some stupid laws. I don't think a couple of canceled shows is basis enough to call for a boycott of Ben (especially since he's a very talented guy) I mean, did we all boycott Liz when she canceled a couple shows? Camden Joy's book "The Last Rock Star Book, Or: Liz Phair, a Rant" is actually not directly about Liz. . . However, there are a lot of references and comic towards Liz. . . The excerpt from the back of the book (Yes, I own it) states: "Camden Joy's hero can charm landladies, but he can't seem to wrap up the quickie biography of rock star Liz Phair he's been comissioned to write. Instead, the shaky author finds himself caught up in recounting the troubled events that mark his own life. His ex-girlfriend (who just might be the illegitimate daughter of dead Rolling Stone Brian Jones); the rock star (whom he's never met); and a mystery girl in an old newspaper photo all start to blur together. If only he could get closer to his subject, before the assignment spins out of control, maybe he'd have a shot at the distinction he deserves. . .." It's actually not too bad of a book. . .definitely interesting to read! The ISBN number is 1-891241-07-9. The LOC Card Catalog # is 98-60029. The list price is $14.95 US/$18.95 CAN. Enjoy!! The story of how I discovered Tori Amos has an interesting Liz Phair synchronicity. One day I heard emanating from our campus auditorium the most fascinating, intriguing chord progressions I had experienced in quite a while. I peeked inside to see a student passionately expressing herself with this beautiful, haunting song. I did not know her by name but remembered seeing her around. She was one of the very few students on our otherwise dull campus who was into facial piercing. And once I overheard her bitterly complaining to another student how little professors expected from students when it came to creative writing. Sonya was not your typical student. A semester or two later I was working in my office with Whip-Smart playing in the background on my computer when Sonya walked past, came to a screeching halt, and burst into my office gasping, "You know Liz Phair?" We had a great talk about music, and at some point I asked her about the song I had overheard her playing in the auditorium. She told me it was Waitress, and said I would probably like Tori Amos. Was she ever right. She later laid an Ani DiFranco tape on me, further expanding my musical horizons. As long as I am on a "how I discovered ..." roll, I'll end with a late entry to the how I discovered Liz thread. During spring break in Florida several years ago I noticed a newspaper with a feature on women in rock. The paper caught my eye because a photo of Alanis accompanied the article. The story included a section on Liz that impressed me sufficiently to buy EIG. It's been obsessive love ever since. I still like Alanis, I do think that Tori Amos is a musical genius, and I think Ani is really cool. But Liz has my heart like no other musician. - --John ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 09:47:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Mariam K Hamou Subject: Hahaha WOW, someone here has issues. Country and alt-country just don't speak to me. EIG, still the definitive Liz work to my mind, is so firmly rooted in the world of rock. That was the album that made me fall in love with Liz's music, and I guess I've got a certain reluctance to see her stray from that too much. I've followed where she's been going for the last few years, but inside I'd really like to see her return to the genuine quirkiness of that first, great album. I still consider that to be "her voice," and a lot of artists spend their whole time looking for that. She nailed it first time out. I'm getting my list of top 10 albums of the 90s together, and it's between EIG and Bowie's 1.Outside for the #1 spot. I'm not sure I can put either Whip-Smart or wcse in the list though. You know, I was just sitting here thinking about something. If I was ever at a Pearl Jam concert, and a water bottle that any member had used landed in my posession, I would keep it without second thought. This is weird because remember how I was talking about Liz's water bottle and how it was offered to me and I refused? I refused because I thought it was like kind of invasive, like looking through her trash or somthing. Yet I'd take a Pearl Jam water bottle in a second. I guess Pearl Jam are just more iconic and omniscient to me, whereas Liz seems more real and earthly. Even physically-- I've spent two Pearl Jam concerts watching on a screen way out on a lawn where I couldn't see the stage, and two shows struggling to be up front but not even front and center! The shows I saw from the lawn certainly created the effect that Pearl Jam was untouchable and larger than life, and the other two were still impersonal, esp. since I had to struggle to keep on my feet and spent alot of time concentrating on my balance. At all 5 times I've seen Liz, I've been front and center, up against the stage. Liz's stages were always closer to the ground than Pearl Jam, first of all, and had less room for security than the PJ shows. PJ has alot of space for the security guys. I was like... right there with Liz. Plus I guess it helps that I met Liz. THat makes her more real too. I only ever WISH I would meet Pearl Jam. I'd settle for Eddie, even. So I guess that explains the water bottle. Pearl Jam are gods, and Liz is, like, mortal. But maybe a sainted mortal or so mething. She's certainly on a different level as a human than I am.
