Singer sounds like Buck Owens, a hero of mine. Plus, they do an interesting version of Prince's Raspberry Beret (sp?). Junior Brown, all of his CDs. He is an amazing guitar player. BR5-49, BR5-49. Great traditional country record. I group traditional country in this category because it doesn't get any air play. Kelly Willis, Well Traveled Love. I think this is out of print, though. Robbie Fulks, Let's Kill Saturday Night. Gillian Welch, Hell Among the Yearlings. Not necessarily country or rock, mostly folk, but absolutely my favorite CD that came out last year. Gillian Welch, Revival. Tulare Dust: A Songwriter's Tribute to Merle Haggard. Just about everybody who is everybody in the alt-country movement is on this CD. This is also where I first heard Lucinda Williams. Tim O'Brian, Red On Blonde. Bob Dylan songs done bluegrass style. Ok, there you go. I will probably think of some more by tomorrow night. She also sings with Cornershop's >Tjinder Singh the song Good To Be On The Road Back Home on Cornershop's >album "When I was Born for the 7th Time". I really dig Tarnation and >Paula Frazier.< Tarnation rules. Also see their first album "Gentle Creatures." The music is like a spaghetti western (Ennio Morricone's soundtracks--i.e. The Good The Bad And The Ugly) set to lyrics. I also like Trailer Bride, and even though the singing is not strong, Meilissa Swingle makes up for it in twang-ridden soul, and she's cute, which has to count for something. Not RAVING, like Liz, but damn good. Personally, I like the REALLY old (before 1950-55)country and western swing stuff too, like Bob Wills, Louvin Brothers, Smokey Wood, Light Crust Doughboys, Rose Maddox & Maddox Bros., etc. For a great sound in this tradition, check out Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, The Dave and Deke Combo, and in a similar vein, Junior Brown (his CD "Guit With It" kicks ass.) Junior also has songs about driving trucks and crazy women, for those of you who feel left out. Also, Don Walser has a yodel that will wake you up better than a cup of coffee. He toured America before he toured his home country and when he did tour here, it was only for those who were 18+, you think he would have done all ages shows considering he's only 20, he should be able to sympathise with under-18's but NO! He obviously gives America prefence over Australia, and he lives there, so I suggest that his Australian citizenship should be taken away and he will never be regarded as an Australian again! This and his little comment about how he regards himself to be "the best australian songwriter of all time" (yeah, what fucking ever!) has made me utterly despise him. Fellow support systemers please join me in a boycott of Ben Lee, well at least fellow aussie support systemers, as he doesn't deserve our time and money (apart from songs with Liz and Melissa Auf Der Maur and anyonelse of good mind that he happens to get play with him)! I was kind of disappointed that she wasn't included in that women in rock book, the collection of pieces by female artists with ani, jewel, etc. does anyone know the one I'm talking about? it has a bluish cover... as for 'only son,' I think it just doesn't cry out "LISTEN TO ME!!!" the way her other slow songs do. I'm thinking like 'shatter' which starts out slow and dreamy, but that guitar is so...mesmerizing. and yeah, it does have that sad quality to it. even when liz is unhappy, there always seems to be some kind of other emotions involved other than just sadness, like a touch of angst, a bit of "fuck you" or some bitter sarcasm. whenever I listen to 'only son' it just feels like the song floats along, like a slow moving fog. it isn't that it is a bad song, it's more like it isn't as fun to listen to as, say, headache. and I feel the same way about uncle alvarez once in a while. where is my liz phair, rock star goddess? which is why supernova kicks ass for cranking up loud. jason ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Sep 1999 11:26:17 -0500 From: Kelly Warner Subject: RE: support-system-digest V2 #269 Some of you have been talking about Only Son, & how you don't care too much for it... My boyfriend probably likes that song more than any on the album, b/c it reminds him of himself. Which is rather sad, actually. It is not one of my personal favorites b/c I don't think the melody really goes anywhere; it just seems to meander. I don't mind that it's "too real." I do mind, however, that one line where she repeats "little, little sister". That bugs me! However, as a writer, I'm way too nitpicky at times. I would bet that the one thing that everyone finds universally irritating about me is the fact that I am incessantly pointing out spelling & grammatical errors/redundancies everywhere I go. I can just imagine your little girl twirling around singing Liz lyrics. One woman had apparently made up new words to songs in order to get things down around the house. I think she graduated in 1985. I know I have seen her grad picture on a few websites. And if you are ever in the neighborhood, the Winnetka Public Library has all the New Trier yearbooks, so you could even look at her geeky freshman year picture. I recently went by Liz's parents house in Winnetka where she spent her high school days and recorded Girlysounds. (This was during the Chicago Liz Fest this summer which was only attended by me and Lucas from Texas). The house is very pretty, largish and gray colored with very nice, natural landscaping. It's on a corner lot on a very quiet street. (Actually, all of Winnetka is pretty quiet.) If you want to hear more about the Chicago Liz Fest I can tell you how we tried to go see where Liz had recorded EIG, but Brad Woods studio has been turned into a Coconuts record store. Liz is in a 2-page spread Calvin Klein ad in the new issue of Jane magazine. On the one hand, I'm a little surprised she "sold out". However, I know she wants to support her baby, and what better way than through a financial subsidy from Calvin Klein Inc. While it doesn't look a whole lot like Liz, she does look good. Lots of eye makeup, deep-dark red nail polish, snugly fitting jeans, hair in her face. Do that many people know who Liz is, though, that she's got the name recognition for a Calvin Klein ad? But oh how times have changed. This is no reflection on Jase whatsoever and the effort he has put into this list. He does a great job, but rarely gets commended. In light of recent comments and arguments over the last few months, I do not feel the need to post much anymore. I'm not going to go on and on about the problems with the list like others. All I want to say is that I hope this list starts to get interesting again. If/when it does, then I will start posting on a more frequent basis. I used to love reading and posting to this digest.
