I'll see if I can suggest some good CDs. Of course, Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne is a perfect CD. Here is a list: Son Volt, Trace Son Volt, Wide Swing Tremelo Son Volt, Straightaways Uncle Tupelo, No Depression any Dwight Yokum 16 Horsepower Kelly Willis, What I Deserve Kelly Willis, Bang Bang Radney Foster, and ol' CD will do Chris Knight, Chris Knight Billy Bragg and Wilco, Mermaid Avenue Shaver, Tramp on Your Street The Byrds, Sweethearts of the Rodeo Lyle Lovett, Joshua Judges Ruth Joe Ely, Letter to Loredo Robert Earl Keen, any CD Well, there is a list. As for Steve Earle, my favorite CD is still his first, Guitar Town. Though, he has cranked some good stuff out since he got out of prison. Train A'Comin' is an amazing acoustic CD with Peter Rowan on mandoline and fiddle and Norman Blake on guitar. El Corazon has a great song tribute to his mentor, Townes Van Zant. His latest is fast becoming my favorite, The Mountain. It is a bluegrass album with the Del McCoury band, and there is some fine song writing on it. I love coal mining songs, and the title cut has to be my favorite. Even better than John Prine's song Paradise. Well, I hope this helps. " I Feel Alright has a nice duet with Lucinda Williams. His lastest album, " The Mountain" is full-out bluegrass and is great if that is to your taste. From the other side of the pond you can never go wrong with anything by Richard Thompson. Not quite alt.country, more like modern folk. Well, I don't know if they qualify as alt-country (I don't see how they cannot) but have you ever heard of a band called Tarnation? They are out of San Francisco I believe. Awesome band and the lead singer, Paula Frazier, has an awesome voice. Something of a cross between Patsy Cline and Siousxie (sp?) of Siousxie and the Banshees. Pick up Mirador, I believe that is their latest album 1998. She also sings with Cornershop's Tjinder Singh the song Good To Be On The Road Back Home on Cornershop's album "When I was Born for the 7th Time". Then again, my good buddy Julia Rios once said it seems a hell of a lot of Liz fans are 'outsiders' in some way, or at least feel like they are (or were when they were younger, whatever). I find this even truer than the 'open mind' thing. [Julia, I hope you don't mind my using your theory -- email me if you do; I haven't heard from you in months!] I also don't think it takes "a somewhat female mentality" at all to understand Liz's emotional lyrics. "I know that I don't always realize / how sleazy it is messing with these guys" could just as easily be "these girls". I don't think the emotions Liz's songs stem from are ever strictly female, and if they are -- oh well. I see Liz Phair as a package -- amazing lyrics, unusual voice/guitar technique/song structure, smarts, good looks (fucking hot, she is), and that overall "cool" vibe she projects in her few videos and live shows. Come to think of it, Liz pretty much represents to me the ideal girl(friend). I'm just saying men can certainly relate and become just as obsessive (this is a bad thing, you realize) as Liz's female/gay fans. In the dream, I went to a concert/festival like Lilith Fair, excpet the acts were Garth Brooks, Veruca Salt, Jewel, and Liz. The people I was with all wanted to meet Garth Brooks, so they went somewhere to try to find him. I was all alone and I bumped into someone, and it was Liz! So we started talking all about her music and I told her how much I liked the new stuff, esp. Firewalker, and we talked about clothes (she was knitting some sort of red sweater) and after a while she told me that she had to go make pasta salad for the backstage party, and as she was leaving she said something like "They told me you weren't really a fan but I'm so glad you are."
