My daughter Carleen is four years old and her favorite song is "Listen here young lady" followed closely by "The Song of Lewis" and "Yes I'm Winning, Spinning." (When they're four you kind of go along with whatever they call things. For example, she calls Pepsi "non-winner" because her Aunt Mary always opens the 2-liter bottles and looks at the bottom of the cap and says, "It's a non-winner.") But I digress. She can sing the entire first verse and chorus word for word of What Makes You Happy (strange hearing a four year old sing about an ex-wife in Pasadena) and thankfully hasn't picked up on the second verse yet. I'm waiting for her to get into something a little more tame like Johnny Feelgood... - -Michael ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 1999 14:59:54 EDT From: NappyZoe@aol.com Subject: Re: Jenny St. Onge Tuulikki99@aol.com said: << Jenny St. Onge is a lair! X-Files, Can't Not Lizsters, Sorry to post 2x... I'm usually all about quality, not quantity. ;^) Anyway, I know there are lots of X-Files fans out there. Well, I need your help: I'm playing a character called "Mully" (spoof of Scully; my partner will be "Sculder") in an improv event around Halloween. I don't watch the show, so I need suggestions of any "signature phrases" or behavior of Scully in The X-Files. You know, like "That's another fine mess you've gotten us into, Mulder," or maybe she's in the habit of rolling her eyes at him, or anything like that. I would greatly appreciate info from any X-Files fans out there! Liz content: wouldn't it be great if Liz wrote a song called "Can't Not?" It's a perfect title for a Liz song. Hurricane Cindy "Can't Not!" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 16:26:00 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Moderation may no longer be a memory, despite what Liz says Okay, so I'm finally back online after the weekend from hell -- moving did not go well at all -- and admittedly, I am not in the best of moods right now. Please keep that in mind as you read what follows. I know that many people are not going to like this, but at this point, I don't care; something needs to be said. Not to pat myself on the back or anything, but I have always prided myself on being a fairly inactive moderator when it comes to this list and have pretty much always let everyone discuss what they wanted, only stepping in when absolutely necessary. Judging from some private emails I've just read, though, I now get the impression that I may be too lenient at times, so now I'm stepping up to the plate to make a few suggestions. First of all, there have been a substantial number of messages posted to the list in the last little while that really would have been better suited to private email. What I'm referring to are the emails where one list member is really only writing to or addressing another, and not really in response to any discussion taking place on the list, but more of a private, in-jokey manner. It might be a good idea from now on for people to ask themselves if what they've written is best suited to the list at large or to private email before sending it. Secondly, and not to single anyone out, but at least one person has lately been sending meaningless drivel to the list; long, rambling messages that don't really have much to do with anything being discussed on the list. This is a forum for discussion, but come on, be reasonable -- even though we're not a strictly on-topic list, this isn't the place to post every single random thought that comes into your head. If what you write isn't really contributing to a discussion that's underway, something that may start a new thread, or something that may be of interest to many list subscribers, don't bother sending it. Use a bit of common sense when posting; basic online etiquette would dictate that behaviors such as typing the same line over sixty times in a row is nothing but obnoxious. Also, typing all in caps is considered "yelling" online and is rude as well. Please refrain from these behaviors. Also, I know that it has been explained away since as a "in-joke," but could people please refrain from calling each other names such as "biz-och-cunt-rag" on the list? And for that matter, since it is a private in-joke and you're just writing to each other anyway, save it for private email. It's not like such discussions add anything to the list. It's funny how we never had these problems when the list was in its old format as 6'1", where all the list messages were sent to me and I compiled them into a digest which I would then send out to all the list members each night. Maybe because people knew that I could choose to block inappropriate postings given the manual operation of the list, they knew better than to send any. It's been suggested to me by a few people now that I set up the list so that postings would have to be approved by me first before being sent on to the list itself, and if it becomes necessary and that's what most people want, I may choose to do that. I've never really wanted to censor anyone and that's not what I'm aiming to do here. I do want the list to be enjoyable for the majority of the subscribers though, not just those who post. The garbage postings do tend to impede actual discussions, and face it, despite what those who post such things think, not everyone enjoys reading what you write. Anyway, I know that a lot of you probably think I'm a bastard by now, but at this point, I don't care. If I speak up about things, I'm going to have people on my back about what I say; if I don't, those who are unhappy will still be on my back. And honestly, I can relate more to those who are dissatisfied with the list these days -- while I do still like it a lot and do enjoy maintaining it, even I'm not into it as much anymore. Moderation isn't quite the evil thing most likely perceive it to be anyway; anyone who has ever been on the Chalkhills mailing list (for the band XTC) will know how greatly a list can benefit from it.
