Subject: Mmmbop and run, even when I was 12 Someone has probably most definitely posted this before, but i dont' remember. I know people posted about Liz being in Rolling Stone's 150 essential recordings, but I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this. Anyway, I'm about four to five months behind on reading my Rolling Stone magazines, so I just read this today. In the list of essential albums, Hanson's "Middle of Nowhere" was reviewd for a dance/pop al bum. ANyway, the like first line of the review is: "The first time you saw a picture of Hanson, you probably wondered what Liz Phair was doing with a couple of teenage girls." I thought that was kinda cute. It's all good, because the guy who reviewed Exile is the same dude who did the hanson album, so he's cool with Mrs Phair and not being a dickhead. Yee haw. Oh and he's also Rob Sheffield, who does "The Sheffield Report" in Rolling Stone. It's a really funny feature. Sometimes RS sucks, but there are alot of funny writers at that mag. I particularly enjoy the "Random Notes". This is so whack... I think I've subscribed to RS for six years. And not-a-once have I read the political articles. I'm not into politicks. Yeah but six years is a long time to subscribe to a magazine. So anyway, but I think I subscribed to seventeen for 9 years. Wow. And do I have a better fashion or makeup sense? HELL NO! Sometimes I feel so butch. Sigh. Anyway, enough about me. Nathan, I hope you were on some serious chemicals when you posted in the previous digest. :) Well... so much for me keeping otu of the mailing list. But I just *had* to post my Liz content. So I'm waiting for someone to start a "person of the millenium" discussion. I mean not on here, but like in some magazine like Time or something. I mean everyone's so hyped about the new milennium, you know they need to do something like that. But hwo do you pick one person out of 1000 years? I'd just be curiosu to see who it turns otu to be. Personally, this millenium thing is a whole lot of bullshit. The world has been around alot longer than 2000 years, and even "2000" is arbitrary in terms of what it represents, cuz isn't the birth year of Jesus kind of debated? Ugh. I'm just so tired of the hype. If I see the characters "Y2K" one more time, I might become a victim of the same-named virus. Allright I'm starting a personal m ission to abolish anything that uses the year 2000 as an advertising ploy. m & m's, you taste good, but you're first. Does it bother anyone else that on the m & m commercials, the people are having conversations with their food right before they eat it? I like my food to be killed and sliced up before I see it. I don't talk to the cow and then take a bite from it. I don't like my food to look anything like it did when it was alive. Hence I don't eat shit like Lobster (which is kind of like m & ms, cuz you gotta cook those things live) or that weird fish that is still all intact (anyway I don't like fish) or whatever else there is like that. Well, I live in the country (more or less, despite this town's >artsy pretensions to national/global importance), so I can say this. :P well, do you remember hearing that little rock, arkansas supposedly had one of the biggest gang problems? I always wondered about that. "this hear is MY chicken coop." then again, they've already got gunracks, so I guess they're prepared. >Jason was recently talking about the sad state of country music these >days. I think you need to distinguish between *real* country music and >what the people in Nashville call country. I agree completely, and thank you for distinguishing. there are certain artists who refuse to conform, and while this isn't exactly relevant (since she doen't really make what I would call country music) shania twain was really attacked for not conforming to nashville's rules. how dare she use a producer from "outside" nashville. almost sounds like when liz was attacked for not sticking to her indie roots. and speaking of lovelines (of the mtv variety) I strongly suggest listening to it on the radio if they broadcast it where you live. it was the original format before mtv picked them up, and it's better. for one thing, it's two hours long, for another, they don't have so many commercial breaks, and they have better topics and better information, and they aren't as censored. and I'm sorry, but why do they need diane farr, the loveline correspondant? I think two co-hosts and special guests are enough. so, does anyone know if liz was ever a guest on lovelines (either format)? and I continue to develop more non-liz threads as I go...but don't I always try to tie it back in somehow? that's the real reason I came here, and by the way, I think it was mike, I think I agree with your interpretation of blood keeper, even though I haven't heard the song, only read the lyrics, it sounds reasonable. jason ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 10:49:15 -0500 From: jimmy Subject: Jon Brion/country >From: Athena.M.Waligore@Dartmouth.EDU (Athena M. Rufus Wainwright!, Aimee Mann >From: brian d irby > >Jason was recently talking about the sad state of country >music these days. I didn't see Jason's post, but I've never been more invigorated by music that has blatant country tinges to it. Lucinda Williams comes to mind first, but records by Amy Rigby, Sarah Dougher and even many songs on the new 3-CD Magnetic Fields records have some FABULOUS country tinges to them. I also dig how many artists are using country in their new music. A newly-written Cadallaca song is called "Out West" and sounds like a fun template for old style westerns and country ditties. So, while I can't comment on country music per se, I like how it's currently influencing some of my fave artists! xjimmy who hasn't posted here in years(?) because he misses the good ol' days of the list........ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 09:50:54 PDT From: "steve kisko" Subject: Re: a liz slam! Don't give it a second thought. Any writer calling Liz a "pop diva" is clearly NOT getting the point. I could go on and on (and I just might) about the difference between "pop" and "rock" and how, on various tracks, Liz rocks just as hard as "heavy metal pioneers" Led Zeppelin (if not harder), or about what it means to be a "pop DIVA" (in the junk pop culture sense of the term). _Now_ who's giving it a second thought? Uh oh... Soo...I'm back into the swing of school and what did we have to do in my speech class? Interview someone and introduce them to the class. Ohk...all's cool and I told myself to NOT mention Liz at all. I'm not sure why I wanted it to be that way, but it happened that I got into talking about how I like computers and manage web pages. The girl who interviewed me checked out my page for herself and decided to do the speech about my Liz Phair web page and me. I was shocked for some reason and she talked about my page very well. She liked the cookies, poetry and the other stuff I have. Well... to make things sound nice and dandy, she mentioned in her speech she borrowed a friend's cd of WCSE and listened to it cuz my page was inspired by the album. She was turned onto Liz. A big shocker is she ended her speech by saying, "Thank you Katie for introducing me to a great musician." Awwww shucks, I really didn't intend to! I need to calm down for some reason. Feeling a hurricane in my blood and having to go to work today doesn't sound too good! Getting rude remarks of after IDing teenagers is not fun! Just doing my job of course.
