After all, anyone who manages to wrest the crown of "Queen of Annoying" away from Christine is kinda doomed, if you know what I mean. Furthermore, it was the 1980s. Industrial accidents abounded. Look at Union Carbide, for example, or Consolidated Lenin in Chernobyl. Why couldn't there have been just one little accidenty? (to mangle a Jar-Jar Binksism) I mean, hell...Vic Morrow is dead and we can't get Alanis under a helicopter? Come on, folks. =P Seriously...I think the problem with Alanis (other than the fact that her name simply begs for insult from people with agile minds) is that she's another one of these overplayed, undertalented maroons whose careers have been advanced at the cost of other more talented and capable artists (you know who). "Ironic" kind of was good....the first thousand times I heard it on the radio. Whatever the 'antibiotics' single was, well...that kinda pretty much nailed the coffin shut with a nine-inch nail. The only thing that went through my mind on that song (other than NOOOO! Change the station rightnow!) was 'How 'bout getting off of my f'n radio, Canadian?', but of course, it would have been replaced by something equally inane and useless...like a Backstreet Boys single. Meh, someone mentioned Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. Bleh...I hope that's not Latin music they're championing, 'cause it sure sucks. =P If I had her love, I'd sell it for a first-generation digital copy of the Girlysound tapes; I heinously regret buying 'On the 6'...if ever I do like P. J. O'Rourke, go on an acid trip with firearms handy, it'll be one of the first things to get blown away. Of course, if I did like Hunter S. Thompson, I'd be more likely to hit it. Someone I saw on TV at the Outer Banks mentioned that "Latin has so much sensuality"...yeah, and no substance. Sex appeal seems to be the sole reason "OT6" is selling...'cause the unremixed 'Love' is like...nauseatingly slow. As for Ricky Martin, I'd prefer that he take that pain away, hopefully with a bullet to the brain. It's good for your record sales, Ricky. Yes, just do it! =P Copying John McLaughlin yet again...issue number two: Someone mentioned that a certain non-McLachlan Canadian artist who shall remain brainle...er, nameless had improved over her first release. Well, that's all good and well...but a certain ECP was perfect from the beginning! :D "So much bandwidth, so little tolerance"...who are you kidding? I've got a lousy 45.3 connection. Ain't no bandwidth around here...and even if there was? I'd probably still be on my scorched-earth defense of ECP et al. Besides, why be tolerant when one can sit on a well-built indie snob position and snipe at pop successes, especially when our very own ECP has been denied such overt success? Nevertheless, it still would be funny as hell to hear Casey Kasem explain 'Flower' on American Top 40. "Now here's a song written by a girl who, well, she's got an oral fixation and she's into extreme sex. Here you have it, 'Flower', from her debut CD Exile In Guyville..." Well...about time to fly into bed for the night. But it's not 27-D. Such frustration and discontent...I think I'll burn all my CDs and become a Siouxie fan. Groooovy. Smashing. Yay black candles and whiny self-fixation! Finally those preppy pigs will pay for their crimes, eh Gothfriends? Eh? (Insert a khaki-clad Michael York to remind me that 'Austin...we won. Best, Jodi - --- Actually several members of Support System have asked Liz/Buddy if they minded the taping and 'trading' (not selling) of Liz's bootlegged shows, girlysounds, etc... and they said they think its cool, as long as we dont sell them. When you sell a bootleg, thats where you get into trouble. I will email you soon with a list of the music I currently have. ~jaime* - --- Actually, it's the copying that gets you into trouble (i'm a copyright lawyer), but if Liz says it's okay, then I feel fine about it...that's why I asked. ;) Thanks very much for forwarding the info! Best, Jodi - --- Actually I'm glad you asked. Most people dont care, and that really upsets me. I know if it were my hard work, I'd be angry that strangers were making my profit, without even caring. yes, Liz has said that she thinks it cool that we trade. Youre a copyright lawyer? Very interesting. Now may I ask you ... is it illegal for people to be selling Liz's tapes? There has to be some kind of law... thanks-- ~jaime* - --- Yes, absolutely it's illegal. It's a violation of the copyright law. But it is just as illegal to be copying them even if you are not selling them. That's a common misconception. So, technically what you guys are doing violates the copyright law, but if Liz doesn't mind, then she won't sue you. ;) (one hopes). I represent a lot of musicians, so I'm very sensitive to these issues. But if you think about it, even if you aren't selling tapes, you are potentially depriving artists of revenue, because people might get a tape for free instead of buying the music commercially. A lot of artists, however, don't mind, and, in fact, even encourage trading of boots, etc. because it fosters enthusiasm for the music, etc..... Hope this helps! Alanis wouldn't write Flower, that's the point. It's a liz song. It has nothing to do with Alanis. Liz writes songs, Alanis writes songs. Maybe it's just the image I've conjured up for myself, but I can't see being able to give that up for a while. While I'm on the big A I'll throw in my little story and then pray all of this will go away. (I'm sure there's a nice Alanis list that would greatly welcome any discussion.) So, it's like Saturday afternoon or evening and having very little to do at that time I found myself parked in front of the tube enjoying a little USA. Call it luck, but I was just in time to catch a Corey. I can't recall if this was a dual Corey film or just a single Corey, but the gist was that Corey for some reason needed to dress himself up as the ugliest female of all time to attend this school for some reason I can't remember. Corey was also a "musician" trying to win some scholarship or something. In an interesting twist the "cool guy" sadly became infatuated with the new female Corey while consistently beating the shit out of the male Corey counterpart. About now I suppose you all are wondering just where the hell this is going. I'm beginning to wonder myself. Anyway, male Corey had this band. For the purposes of this writing we'll simply call it The Worst Thing I've Ever Heard. In case I failed to mention it earlier, Corey on keys. 'kay? Everyone up to speed? Good. So now Corey is getting ready for the big competition for the scholarship (this is male Corey; I forget what happened with female Corey except that he/she/it joined the cheerleading squad, got the hots for Nicole Eggert - who thought Corey was female, but later learned to grow and get past it, then was thought to be a lesbian by the gym teacher, but was eventually found out by everyone at a pep rally, but everyone got past it and it all worked out - whew!). So at some point male Corey is walking down the hall of the local cheesy high school when he throws a flashy finger towards this big haired monster in neon and leg warmers and utters the words, "Take care of those pipes Alanis!" Yes, disco Alanis in her feature film debut. So in the big finale Corey wins scholarship by playing Worst Song Ever featuring Alanis on vocals. I forget how it went, but just maybe something along the line of "transparent dangling carrots..." So, the point to all of this. There is absolutely none. I myself hold no ill will against Alanis and her questionable past (although I do hold fond memories of Alanis and her Brady-permed hair in the declining times of the once fab "You Can't Do That..."). I am happy for her and her success and can even say that I find some of her songs catchy and fun. But it is my wish for this new Alanis Support System to disappear, or at least move into the realms of private email. That said... The surprise is that it's not a surprise!" ? Anyone going to see kristin hersh on friday @ the knitting factory? All ages, baby. I'm tres psyched. Mayhaps I'll meet up w/ one or some or none of you. Yay. Oh! Also, I was very psyched when I saw in that fun-fun (not fen-fen) article that liz liked rushmore, since I loooooooooove that movie and i know the main character's brother. Yay. weird, convoluted connection that makes me feel somewhat special. ok, the feeling's gone now. if anyone out there is the person who e-mailed me in july about photo fun for cd trades and stuff, please e-mail me again. I don't have any mail saved from july since i was in oxford using netmail and it's defucktive, and I forgot what the whole thing was about, but it sounded yummy. there could be three or four or five! piper (I've seen another allison on this list, so now i must change my name to something distinctively different.) np: bis _atom powered action_ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 16:09:27 EDT From: MLevine171@aol.com Subject: um....yeah.. Liz likes Alanis, and if u can't have respect for others, including singers Liz respects, how can u have respect for liz?? steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 17:01:28 EDT From: Ironic999@aol.com Subject: hi, i'm new hi everyone, i'm Lauren and i'm new to this list....i've liked liz phair's music for a while and was pleased to see her open for alanis. other music i like is alanis morissette, no doubt, and the dave matthews band, and i don't appreciate the people on this list making fun of alanis.... i can see if you don't like alanis' music, that's your opinion, but i've heard stupid things like "her forehead is too big"...what the hell is that supposed to mean??? if you're gonna make arguements like that, then alanis fans can make them right back to you about liz. but they don't, because they respect her as well. i intend to stay on this list because i really love liz phair's music, but i'm afraid i might not be able to if the members feel that they need to constantly remind everyone how much they hate alanis. it's enough already, please stop. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 17:01:37 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: The Alanis issue (mostly) Dan wrote: > I can remember a time when i looked forward to reading digests too...now i >lITERALLY just skim passed all the immature bullshit and get to the Liz >content. >And sad to say..there have been MANY lists that were just basically BORING >talk about blair witch/alanis/personal weed experiences..all of which are >immature..but man..comparing this list TODAY to the former 6'1 Digest..it >seems we've had a lobotomy. oh well..sorry..just pointing out the digression. >Which was once my favorite list, (and there is nothing wrong with being >intelligently off topic) it has now become a sess pool of immaturity >complete with name calling and pretentions, which is worthy of a quick skim >through. Ever since I started the list, I've always tried to be as "hands off" a list maintainer as I could. I've tried to step in only when things have gotten particularly bad, such as the occasional flame war that's cropped up, and usually then just requesting that the matter be taken off the list and to private email. I've always wanted people to feel like they could write about whatever they wished without the threat of being censored, which is why I've never set any rules about off-topic posting. I have been puzzled at certain times why the list wasn't more on-topic, particularly last fall just after the release of WCSE and during Liz's tour, but at the same time, we've had a lot of great non-Liz discussions. As long as people do post intelligently, as you said, I really don't see anything wrong with whether they're on-topic or not. Regarding the difference between the list in its 6'1" days and how it is now, I'm not surprised that people no longer see eye-to-eye as much and that there have been a greater number of disagreements. There are a lot more subscribers here now than 6'1" ever had, and we're now a much more diverse group than before. All of that said, while I've never wanted to be a "looking over everyone's shoulder" type of moderator, I do feel I must address the ongoing Alanis thread. While a few of the responses regarding the subject have been intelligent and sensible or have been humorous without being hurtful, the insults, attacks and bashing (of each other and the artist in question) are pointless. If all of you want to continue these discussions, please feel free to, but either lighten up or take it to private e-mail. Calling people names or exchanging insults will no longer be tolerated on the list. C'mon, guys, I would have expected better from all of you. Feel free to discuss whatever you all want, but keep in mind that questioning and debating ideas is cool, but most of what's already transpired has not been. While I would hate to do it, there are times when I feel like putting a ban on all discussions of Alanis on this list. It never fails that she is the only topic that inspires this much animosity from both sides. We've had these discussions over and over in the past, both on this list in its current and original formats, and before that on Guyville. It's always the same, and despite anything that gets posted, I doubt anyone's ever going to change their position. Those who like Alanis will continue to do so, and those who don't probably won't be changing their minds anytime soon either, or so it seems to me. One last thing: No offense intended, but for those who are accusing others of being "stupid" and "immature," it would help if you recognized when you are being baited and didn't give in to it. You just don't come out any further ahead. Jase ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V2 #248 ************************************
