But I >also bought it at the aforementioned indie store. So I don't have a problem >buying used. Coupla days out of date, but what the hell. I figured I'd have standing on this issue 'cause I'm a Sheryl Crow fan, who oddly enough understood why Wal-mart didn't carry "Sheryl Crow" in '97. Simply put, they don't have to. Wal-mart, KMart, etc, are under no obligation to carry any particular CD if they so choose not to. No permutation of capitalist theory says they 'have' to do anything, especially if it's not in their perceived corporate interest to do so. Only thing that determines what they have to do is what they have to do in order to stay afloat, which Wal-Mart does admirably well (although I patently refuse to buy anything there for local politico-economic reasons). I /was/ irritated at the fact that WCSE had an edited cover, but after a few minutes of reflection, I realized that it was a tempest in a teapot to worry about it it. Now, I've heard a lot in recent months about Wal-Mart's "puritanical" stance and people complaining as if Wal-Mart has some perceived social obligation to carry anything and everything that the public wants, so I finally sat down and thought up a position stump speech on the issue. You don't like that fact? Go to the local indie record store. I happen to have a proto-indie chain around here that has no such pretensions to being a 'family' store, so they have no trouble selling the latest er...um..../product/ from acts like Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc. To move away from a probably enraging issue, I reckon I'll relate the latest story of my album purchases, and why I'm so damned happy to be a member of this infamously-acronymed list. (Incidentally, 'SSD' conjures up images of the Imperial Navy from Star Wars, since their Executor-class battleships, in which Vader tools around in have been referred to, erroneously, as 'Super Star Destroyers', but enough from a technical nitpicker's perspective on Star Wars): Due to the well, interesting tastes espoused on this list, I've managed to find at least three if not four artists I never would have heard of otherwise and have been convinced to go ahead and take the damned plunge on another. In no certain order, the first are Juliana Hatfield, Heather Nova, Aimee Mann, and Beth Orton. Plunge-artist of the moment is Sarah McLachlan, someone I managed to write off as merely 'another damned Canadian' (hey, after Celine Dion and Al-anus, is this a surprise to you?). Having blown over $100 on CDs in the last five days, I've managed to pick up three McLachlans, 'Oyster' by Nova, 'Only Everything' by Hatfield, and 'Stupid' by Mann. Frankly, I've enjoyed the hell out of 'em, riding up and down the asphalt while at the Outer Banks of North Carolina, whereupon I got some of those trendy OBX stickers. Muahaha. So, a tip of the hat to you folks on this Support System, whether Elizabeth Clark needs one or not. It's been fun spending shitloads of money on CDs, even if I did get a laugh from some young whelp at Outer Banks Music when I bought 'Only Everything', 'Oyster', and 'I'm with Stupid', 'cause I was "buying some old stuff" or something. Meh. I wanted to rip his multiple noserings out with a pair of needle-nosed pliers and hrrm. Nevermind. A friend o' mine once remarked that "Man, you like some gloomy shit." This batch of purchases would probably fit in there with it, but you know...if I didn't balance the old life with this stuff, I'd probably be bouncing around like I was chugging Hayley Mills Happy Juice or something, and that's a scarier thought than me being grim, sarcastic, and irascible--call it switching from say, Katie Couric to Don Imus. ECP Content: The only radio station in the local market that I ever heard ECP on ('Johnny Feelgood', Whip-Smart', and 'Polyester Bride') I think has been taken over in a nasty legal battle. C'est la vie, I reckon. It might lead to Imus on an FM dial instead of a crackly AM station, but nonetheless, I'm of two minds; the station's defense was "You don't want one of our (incompetent) DJs replaced by hateful, spiteful, Don Imus, do you?), but nonetheless, I'll have to rely on SSD even more, since the other local stations are simply not ECP-compatible. Hell, they're not even Sheryl Crow compatible. Scary, man. As Judge Wapner, or some other TV judge used to say back in the 1980s, "That's all." MRW NP: "Star Wars Theme", 12" Disco Remix by Meco Monardo Well, actually--one PS: Since there seems to be a resurgence of anti-Spears sentiment, let me toss a little 'me too' in. After hearing her first song a couple of times, I got the feeling that I'd prefer to hit her with a sixteen-inch rifle, one more damned time and shut her up. Same goes for that Christina Aguilera; I'd prefer to take that damned bottle and break it over her head; the only genie worth anything besides a six-ounce Sprite bottle is Barbara Eden, and she'd rate a ten ounce Coca-Cola. Or something. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 03:03:46 -0400 From: "Michael Worrell" Subject: Re: Kelly Willis, and Other Things >Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 20:06:47 -0400 (EDT) >From: "Nicole W." >Subject: Setlists... > >And Sandra... is Kelly Willis that chick from Top Gun? If not, what was >the chick from Top Gun called? Oh wait... i think it was Kelly McGinnis >or something. Okay it kind of looks the same? Kelly McGillis is the name you're looking for. She played Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood in Top Gun, and has done other stuff...don't really know what other than being Harrison Ford's love interest in some 1980s movie. Something recently occurred to me, and I thought it might actually be funny to someone who's up at 0241. Chances are, most of you know 'Russian Girl', by ECP. In a flash of capitalistic fervor (while wondering just how in the hell to make ECP more commercially successful), it occurred to me to tie Anna Kournikova to this song in a Nike ad or something, just to get some further exposure to a potential market Eh, 'From Russia With Lust', it's the little Russian girl. Or something. As John McLaughlin would say, issue #3: What's so wrong with the soundtrack to Titanic? There's like, some latent hostility out there on this list towards it. I own it; hell, I'm happy to admit it. There's nothing wrong with the latest James Horner remix of his Star Trek II soundtrack. (And it /is/ true. STII, Aliens, and Titanic all sound eerily alike. For a while, I thought Jack and Rose on Titanic would be chasing Khan in the Reliant 'cause he'd stolen the Star of the Ocean or whatever that gem was, while Sigourney Weaver chased xenomorphs through the bowels of Titanic with James T. Kirk in tow). Now, it is true that I manage to hit 'skip' when Celine Dion comes up, but that's a different story. Respect her talent; prefer not to experience it. =P Direct ECP Content: One copy of WCSE and one copy of Juvenilia reside at Outer Banks Music, and the local indie store has no ECP content. Either she's selling well around there, or else like...nobody's buying it for the stores. TBWP Content(!): My stuff ordered from blairwitchdirect.com shipped on the 20th. Yay. Anyone have the CD mix that's branded from that movie? Looks interesting. Anyways. Whoever it was who got the limo ride, well...come the revolution, you'd better flee the country. ^_^ MRW NP: "Walk This World", by Heather Nova from 'Oyster'. Damn CDNow for thinking I'd ever want a Garth Brooks CD! If it ain't Deana Carter, Faith Hill, or the infamous Dixie Chicks, I don't want it. However, anyone that recommends a Denis Leary CD for me can't be all bad. If I didn't think Leary's work'd get me struck by lightning, I'd probably listen to it more often than four years ago. Of course, that's irrelevant. Two posts in less than two months. Damn you, Nicoledirtybastard; you're rubbing off on me. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 01:58:11 -0700 From: "Sally Mae" Subject: Placebo, Alex Lloyd >Smiths fans include> Placebo, I do believe are also Smiths fans as they have, I think, covered a Smiths song. Try listening to Flower, Divorce Song, Fuck & Run, etc., loud in the car with a 3 1/2 yr old child in the back seat. It's just a matter of time before he starts repeating the words! Guess I'm going to listen to EIG privately in the future. Are there any other Liz Phans that have young kids? Just curious? I think buying used CD's is fine. We have approx. 1800 CD's in our collection so we've paid full price for plenty of them. Some of you should get off your high horses! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 11:23:54 EDT From: MLevine171@aol.com Subject: Re: #240's "Rant or Article" and Fulsome Thanks > (hey, > after Celine Dion and Al-anus, is this a surprise to you?). I'd just like to say that this comment is not right..People are always bashing Alanis on this list, and I'm not gonna let it happen anymore. If you gave Alanis a chance, u'd see that she is a brilliant, sweet woman with lots of talent writing and singing. maybe u don't like her, but some of us DO, and its not right when u called her Al-anus or whatever, out of respect to us. I mean, it's alright if you don't like her, but come on? That's low to start changing her name around into disgusting things like that. I think you're thinking that alanis and her fans are all on the same line as britney spears, or something, and we're not. We respect lots of music, pretty much a lot of the same bands and singers that Liz phans listen to. Maybe you're mad because Alanis got more credit, and Liz came out before her, etc, but Alanis wasn't trying to change anything..she just wrote Jagged Little Pill to express herself, as she always does. Same as Liz. Liz wrote those demos. She didn't say "I'm going to take these demos and make an album, and change the music industry's view of women." Liz even gave Alanis lots of thanks getting Liz to know touring better, and Alanis gave lots of thanks to Liz for opening for her shows, because she respects Liz. IT's none of that "Liz should have had Alanis open" or "Liz should get more respect" or "Now, Alanis' fans are going to be Liz phans, and they don't know the real liz, they are just liking her music because she opened for Alanis" shit! First of all, I can definitely understand Liz's lyrics, I know why they're great. They're both great artists, now stop disrespecting Alanis, and leave her alone! If you don't like her, you don't like her, but don't act like low and start changing around her name, out of respect for her and her fans. Thank u!
