The Smiths have done anything but sell out. In fact, they must be the most unaccepted band in history. I would highly doubt that Morrissey or Johnny Marr get to decide where that song is used. That song has been butchered and misused many times. The version used on that show is NOT THE SMITHS. It's a cover by love spit love. They even edited the song to cut out the real meaning. "I am the son (sun) and the heir (air)....." the part they cut is "of a shyness that is crimally vulgar". Changes the meaning quite a bit. That song wasn't written for 3 pretty witches fighting off boyfriends on prime time TV. Any popular use of that song is really a contradiction. Without Morrissey singing, the song loses its relavence. Just my opinion... The Smiths were one of the most influential bands of the post modern movement. Smiths fans include Kurt Kobain (yes, a huge smiths fan) Courtney Love (once said something like "you can't tell me nirvana was more important than the smiths..." Michael Stipe (friend of morrissey) Chrissie Hynde (once covered a Morrissey tune, Johnny Marr, the guitarist, was IN the pretenders for a while) Natalie Merchant (once covered the same Morrissey tune) Thom Yorke (a huge smiths fan. once said something like, "The smiths are the reason radiohead exists" ......this is by no means a complete list. These are just a few of the artists frequently discussed around here. Do yourself a favor. Pick up a copy of "The Queen is Dead". Well, while I'm not new to Liz fandom, I have never had the opportunity to hear her live or hear any boots/demos/whatnot. What would you recommend as the first live boot and/or demo/unreleased song boot? And if anybody is interested in trades, I would love to hear from you...I don't have any Liz obviously, but I have a lot of U2, Springsteen, and others. Let me know. I'm not looking to get every boot known to man, just for the introductory stuff. Just an idea. :) Yeah, and how about those scumbags who are selling our free bootlegs sending everyone on the list some $$ too? They shouldn't sell them in the first place. NO ONE should be making any money off of these tapes. This is a crusade that I started awhile back, but there was so little interest that I just kind of gave up. If someone gets the tapes for free from devoted fans and then sells them on E-Bay (or anywhere else for that matter) he or she is dead WRONG morally if they think that it's OK. I have little problem with capitalism, just with assholes who use it as an excuse for bad behavior and to rationalize their own bullshit. I said it before: Let's e-mail the people on the E-Bay bidding lists and tell them that they can get the tapes for FREE from any of us for the cost of postage and blank tapes. I personally filled three orders from people who gave up their bidding. >PersyGrrrl wrote: >As for eBay, if someone's gonna pay that much for what are probably inferior >copies of stuff, maybe they deserve it. Don't let the corporate mindfuck get to you, too. People sometimes need to be told what's WRONG. You are in trouble, because if anything is fair, it would be sharing the profits with the people who propogate the taping trades. It's not really practical anyway (hence your sarcasm) but it just points up how infinitely more selfish and greedy certain individuals are for taking all the $$ for themselves, or AT ALL. >Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 20:36:18 -0400 >From: "Jaime" >Subject: ebay and jason's reply! > >Ah! These are my thoughts put into words better than I myself could EVER have done. I mean, as a whole, I don't think Lilith Fair is a BAD idea..but at the same time..it kills me how ehhe "Sar-uh" decides she's going to make a push for equality for women in music - then she proceeds to place all the women on the venue in order of popularity. "Lemme see...I'll put Liz Phair on first to get it over with, and only for half an hour cuz she's not as famous...and okay...then I'll end the show in a grand finale and get an hour..cuz I'm the boss and I started it and people know me the most." Okay, i"m being a dick head now, but I mean, come ON! If Sarah REALLY wanted it EQUAL - she'd give everyone a bloody hour.(I'm speculating too..I don't even know if it is Sarah who decides this - but we all know she has a say. I'm sure if she didn't like something she has authority to change it.) We have to face it - the only reason Liz Phair played for half a bloody hour is because she was the least known. WOW - way to push her music out there Sar-uh. I don't know..it doesn't really make sense to me. Festivals always confuse and annoy me. Especially something as ORGANIZED as Lilith Fair. There just seems to be a lack of spontanaity or something. I was not a BIT impressed with the Detroit show..Liz's set was cool and everything, I love the "Love/Hate Transmission"..but I mean, - the fact that it wasn't in a smaller venue...and the fans weren't HALF as enthusiastic for Liz just really robbed the whole show of its energy. (SHe wasn't playing with Buddy either, that could might have played a factor too). But I still don't know what to think of Lilith Fair. It may be a good idea...but this is for sure a prototype of what a good festival could be. I just don't like the whole "order of popularity" thing. It annoys me. Like, when Liz's set ended..a whole attitude of "now the real stars come on" took over. It just seemed silly. I don't know...maybe it helped Liz in the fact that it gave her SOME exposure...but if it was TRULY equal for all stars on the venue - Liz Phair would have gotten A billion times more PROPER exposure, like the others did. The real stars. Ya right. hope i didn't piss anyone off, Dan. Yesterday, I was driving mys ister somewhere in the car, and I was playing my copy of 10/6/98 at the Avalon in Boston, and White Chocolate Space Egg came on, and she said, and I quote: "I like this song." Whoa... A breakthrough? Well it could take a while to convert her, I mean she's pretty heavily drenched in the whole TRL (total request live)-type mysic scene. She knows all the words to that Abercrombie and Fitch girls song. I heard it for the first tiem yesterday. It's... interesting? It's not as bad as the other stuff she listens to, cuz the lyrics are funny, but I don't think they're supposed to be. No Liz dreams lately, but I had a dream last night, out of the blue, that Stone Gossard (guitarist for Pearl Jam) was in love with me. I mean I tried to get his autograph and he wouldn't give it to me, so I snuck to the tour bus (which was more like a tour truck-bed) where the band swas sleeping, and played stupid, adn we got ot talking, and he autographed my poster and wrote this big long thing, but all I remember was the part that said "I [Heart] You". Can't beat that ('cept with Eddie Vedder... oh and if the dream was actually real). So I guess no Liz content either. :) Cept I know! Liz's speakin voice in "California" alwasy reminded me of Jo from the Facts of Life (Nancy McKeon, who once paid a visit to this list... ;) ) I guess I'll go now. Later, Nicole P.S. For an early bday present, I got Ray of LIght yesterday. I know, it's been out a while, but it took me a while to realize I wanted it. It's a consistently good album, I think.
